Intergranular corrosion susceptibility of Al–Li–Cu and Al–Li–Cu–Mg alloys increases with copper content, and the depth of attack increases with ageing, i.e. UAPA~30 mm) further analysis of corrosion test results is required.

Book excerpt: The objective of the program is to develop a stress corrosion resistant high strength aluminum alloy through addition of minor elements and variations in heat treatment. In Phase I, fifteen special chemistry alloys based on the 7075 composition were prepared in plate form with additions of silver, boron, cerium, yttrium and zirconium. The materials evaluation consisted of metallographic and aging studies, stress corrosion testing and determination of mechanical and fracture properties. The silver bearing alloys, while not immune, were the only alloys to show increased resistance to stress corrosion cracking in the T6 temper. Overaging treatments improved the stress corrosion resistance of all alloy combinations tested. Mechanical property evaluations and transmission electron microscopy studies indicate that silver additions retard the rate of overaging and promote a finer dispersion of M' precipitate, which allow these materials to attain stress corrosion resistance without large decreases in tensile strength. However, the increased quench sensitivity of silver-bearing alloys may limit this strength advantage to thinner sections unless other changes are made in chemical composition. On the basis of stress corrosion, fatigue, fracture toughness, and strength requirements, five step-aged special chemistry alloys are proposed for Phase II testing. (Author).

Book excerpt: Three alloys, Al-6%Zn-2.5%Mg-1.5%cu, Al-6%Zn-2.5%Mg-1.5%Cu-0.15%Zr and Al-6%Zn-2.5%Mg-1.5%Cu-0.17%Fe-0.15%Cr-0.11%Mn were produced as 37mm plate in the T6 condition. The stress corrosion resistance, fracture toughness and tensile properties of the alloys were determined to identify the effects of the grain refining elements, Zr, Cr, Fe and Mn on these properties. A special processing treatment, involving extensive precipitation and warm working, was also applied to pieces of plate to produce an extensively recrystallised structure, with a small grain size, for comparison with the coarser structures of the conventionally worked alloys. The results indicated that the alloy containing Fe, Cr and Mn had the highest stress corrosion resistance and strength but the lowest fracture toughness. The addition of 0.15% Zr to the quaternary alloy slightly improved the tensile strength and stress corrosion resistance but had no effect on fracture toughness. However this addition of Zr markedly improved the hot workability of the alloy and increased its tensile ductility. Special processing and working at 250 C was beneficial to the stress corrosion resistance of the quaternary alloy but detrimental to that of the other two alloys containing Zr or Fe, Cr and Mn. It was concluded that, in these Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys, a recrystallised grain structure has a low stress corrosion resistance and that inhibiting recrystallisation increases stress corrosion resistance. The effect of these variables has been shown to be quite complex. However, a consistent pattern of behavior is beginning to emerge which, it is hoped, will lead to a considerably changed understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process. It is considered probable that an increased understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process will also contribute measureably to an improved understanding of general fatigue processes. Material variables such as composition, directionality of properties, and microstructure, have important effects on corrosion-fatigue behavior of aluminum alloys. However, it appears that these variables, at least in gaseous environments, may be important largely because of their effects on the mechanical behavior of aluminum alloys. On the other hand, studies in seawater suggest that these variables become increasingly important as the corrosive nature of the environment increases. This memorandum discusses in detail the effects of both test variables and material variables on corrosion fatigue. In addition, current theories of corrosion-fatigue mechanisms are outlined, and several methods of preventing corrosion fatigue are suggested. (Author).
