Book excerpt: "The major objective of the level ice performance trials was to assess the vessel's performance capabilities in level ice and first year ridges, [in order] to provide BeauDril with a better knowledge of the vessel's capabilities. The trials program took place concurrently with the M.V. Ikaluk, level ice performance trials, in early January 1984. Subsequent analysis of the trials results has led to the following conclusions: The vessel is capable of moving continuously through 1.5 metres (5 ft) of ice, and is likely to be capable of moving continuously through 1.6 to 1.8 metres (5.25 to 6 ft.) of level ice. The air bubbler system is effective in reducing ice resistance in level ice thicknesses greater than 0.5 metres. In ice thicknesses less than 0.5 metres, the bubbler system consumes power with no benefit. When ramming an ice feature at full power from a broken channel, it is inefficient to back further than three shiplengths (260 m) to obtain maximum impact speed (approximately 13 knots). A backing distance of two shiplengths will give an impact speed of approximately 11.5 knots and one shiplength approximately 9.0 knots. There is no significant hull strain in the instrumented areas of the bow when operating in level first year ice or broken channel. Average transitting speeds in first year ice, 0.8 metres thickness with ridge/rubble concentrations of 30% and 50% are 5 and 2.5 knots, respectively"--Leaf 1.
