Book Synopsis Lordship, State Formation and Local Authority in Late Medieval and Early Modern England by : Spike Gibbs
Download or read book Lordship, State Formation and Local Authority in Late Medieval and Early Modern England written by Spike Gibbs and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-27 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a new narrative of how local authority and social structures adapted in response to the decline of lordship and the process of state formation, Spike Gibbs uses manorial officeholding – where officials were chosen from among tenants to help run the lord's manorial estate – as a prism through which to examine political and social change in the late medieval and early modern English village. Drawing on micro-studies of previously untapped archival records, the book spans the medieval/early modern divide to examine changes between 1300 and 1650. In doing so, Gibbs demonstrates the vitality of manorial structures across the medieval and early modern era, the active and willing participation of tenants in these frameworks, and the way this created inequalities within communities. Book Synopsis International Commercial Agreements and Electronic Commerce by : William F. Fox
Download or read book International Commercial Agreements and Electronic Commerce written by William F. Fox and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although negotiation still lies at the heart of international commercial agreements, much of the detail has migrated to the Internet and has become part of electronic commerce. This incomparable one-volume work??now in its sixth edition??with its deeply informed emphasis on both the face-to-face and electronic components of setting up and performing an international commercial agreement, stands alone among contract drafting guides and has proven its enduring worth. Following its established highly practical format, the book’s much-appreciated precise information on a wide variety of issues??including those pertaining to intellectual property, alternative dispute resolution, and regional differences??is of course still here in this new edition. There is new and updated material on such matters as the following: • the need for contract drafters to understand and to use the concepts of “standardization” (i.e., the work of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as a contract drafting tool); • new developments and technical progress in e-commerce; • new developments in artificial intelligence in contract drafting; • the possible use of electronic currencies such as Bitcoin as a payment device; • foreign direct investment; • special considerations inherent in drafting licensing agreements; • online dispute resolution including the innovations referred to as the “robot” arbitrator; • changes in the arbitration rules of major international organizations; and • assessment of possible future trends in international commercial arrangements. Each chapter provides numerous references to additional sources, including a large number of websites. Materials from and citations to appropriate literature in languages other than English are also included. In its recognition that a business executive entering into an international commercial transaction is mainly interested in drafting an agreement that satisfies all of the parties and that will be performed as promised, this superb guide will immeasurably assist any lawyer or business executive to plan and carry out individual transactions even when that person is not interested in a full-blown understanding of the entire landscape of international contracts. Business executives who are not lawyers will find that this book gives them the understanding and perspective necessary to work effectively with the legal experts.

Book Synopsis A Northern Alternative by : Kee Heong Koh
Download or read book A Northern Alternative written by Kee Heong Koh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional portraits of Neo-Confucianism in China are built on studies of scholars active in the south, yet Xue Xuan (1389–1464), the first Ming Neo-Confucian to be enshrined in the Temple to Confucius, was a northerner. Why has Xue been so overlooked in the history of Neo-Confucianism? In this first systematic study in English of the highly influential thinker, author Khee Heong Koh seeks to redress Xue’s marginalization while showing how a study interested mainly in “ideas” can integrate social and intellectual history to offer a broader picture of history. Significant in its attention to Xue as well as its approach, the book situates the ideas of Xue and his Hedong School in comparative perspective. Koh first provides in-depth analysis of Xue’s philosophy, as well as his ideas on kinship organizations, educational institutions, and intellectual networks, and then places them in the context of Xue’s life and the actual practices of his descendants and students. Through this new approach to intellectual history, Koh demonstrates the complexity of the Neo-Confucian tradition and gives voice to a group of northern scholars who identified themselves as Neo-Confucians but had a vision that was distinctly different from their southern counterparts.
