For the cloud computing paradigm to be fully adopted and effectively used it is critical that the security mechanisms are robust and resilient to malicious faults and attacks. Securing cloud is a challenging research problem because it suffers from current cybersecurity problems in computer networks and data centers and additional complexity introduced by virtualizations, multi-tenant occupancy, remote storage, and cloud management. It is widely accepted that we cannot build software and computing systems that are free from vulnerabilities and that cannot be penetrated or attacked. Furthermore, it is widely accepted that cyber resilient techniques are the most promising solutions to mitigate cyberattacks and change the game to advantage defender over attacker. Moving Target Defense (MTD) has been proposed as a mechanism to make it extremely challenging for an attacker to exploit existing vulnerabilities by varying different aspects of the execution environment. By continuously changing the environment (e.g. Programming language, Operating System, etc.) we can reduce the attack surface and consequently, the attackers will have very limited time to figure out current execution environment and vulnerabilities to be exploited. In this dissertation, we present a methodology to develop an Autonomic Resilient Cloud Management (ARCM) based on MTD and autonomic computing. The proposed research will utilize the following capabilities: Software Behavior Obfuscation (SBO), replication, diversity, and Autonomic Management (AM). SBO employs spatiotemporal behavior hiding or encryption and MTD to make software components change their implementation versions and resources randomly to avoid exploitations and penetrations. Diversity and random execution is achieved by using AM that will randomly "hot" shuffling multiple functionally-equivalent, behaviorally-different software versions at runtime (e.g., the software task can have multiple versions implemented in a different language and/or run on a different platform). The execution environment encryption will make it extremely difficult for an attack to disrupt normal operations of cloud. In this work, we evaluated the performance overhead and effectiveness of the proposed ARCM approach to secure and protect a wide range of cloud applications such as MapReduce and scientific and engineering applications.

Resiliency is a critical challenges given that disruptions due to failures (either accidental or because of disasters or attacks) may entail significant revenue losses (e.g., USD 25.5 billion in 2010 for North America). Such failures may originate at any of the major components of the cloud architecture and propagate to others (i.e., data centers and optical networks). We investigate a large body of work focusing on resilience of cloud computing by presenting first the cloud computing architecture and concepts. Then, we categorize a large number of techniques for cloud computing infrastructure resiliency, ranging from designing and operating the facilities, servers, networks, to their integration and virtualization (e.g., middleware infrastructure). And, also we categorize techniques focused on resilience in application design and development. Cloud-computing services are provided to consumers through a system consisting of computing servers and communication network equipment which is typically referred to as a cloud network (CN). CN providers virtualize resources (e.g., virtual machines (VMs) and virtual networks (VNs)) for efficient and secure resource allocation. A natural disaster (e.g., an earthquake) or a human-made disaster (e.g., a weapons-of-mass-destruction attack (WMD)) not only produces cloud network disruptions caused by multiple infrastructure failures, but by subsequent and unpredictable disruptions induced by cascading failures. Major power grid outages could cause cascading failures on cloud infrastructure operation. We investigate the disaster resilient cloud network mapping in optical networks by proposing a proactive approach and a reactive approach. Our proactive approach is based on risk assessment, VM backup location, and post-disaster survivability to reduce the risk of failure, the probability of CN disconnection, and the penalty paid by operators and/or services providers due to loss of capacity. We formulate the proposed approach as an integer linear program (ILP) and study both disaster types. Our simulations show that our approach can lead to a reduction in the risk of CN disconnection and penalty up to 90% in both scenarios. However, proactive disaster protection requires large pre-provisioning of additional capacity before a possible disaster, with limited protection for later cascading failures. We also investigate a reactive, adaptive, and cascading-failure-aware CN disaster recovery scheme that reacts after the disaster, and uses risk modeling to reduce the capacity required for the recovery and minimizes the post-disaster disconnection of CNs. In this study, propagation patterns of power grid failures are used to estimate the location of cascading failures. Simulation results based on WMD attacks show that our approach can lead to significant reduction in the risk of CN disconnections due to cascading failures, while reducing up to 50% of the capacity required for recovery. Optical Cloud Radio Access Network (Optical C-RAN) will improve mobile radio coordination and resource efficiency to cloud computing services by allowing BaseBand processing Unit (BBU) functions to be virtualized and centralized, i.e., deployed in a BBU hotel. So we consider a BBU hoteling scheme based on the concept of Access Cloud Network (ACN) to provide virtualization and multi-tenancy functionalities in Optical C-RAN. An ACN consists of virtualized BBUs (vBBUs) placed in metro cloud data centers (metro DCs), and connected to a set of Remote Radio Heads (RRHs). Resiliency is a critical problem given the high traffic demand and strict transmission delay. We investigate the ACN resiliency against single network and processing failures by proposing five approaches for ACN resiliency: two of them based on 1+1 dedicated protection, another two based on low-cost degraded protection, and one based on auxiliary topology protection. Simulations confirm that 1+1 approaches require 100% additional resources to provide full survivability, while auxiliary topology scheme requires only 53% additional resource, and the degraded protection approach requires between 17% and 31% additional resources to provide partial survivability.

Because they are usually controlled by one or few organizations, even when they are complex systems, their dependencies can be understood. The organization oversees and manages changes. These CI systems have been affected by the introduction of new ICT models like global communications, PCs and the Internet. Even virtualization took more time to be adopted by Critical systems, due to their strategic nature, but once that these technologies have been proven in other areas, at the end they are adopted as well, for different reasons such as costs. A new technology model is happening now based on some previous technologies (virtualization, distributing and utility computing, web and software services) that are offered in new ways and is called cloud computing. The organizations are migrating more services to the cloud; this will have impact in their internal complexity and in the reliability of the systems they are offering to the organization itself and their clients. Not always this added complexity and associated risks to their reliability are seen. As well, when two or more CI systems are interacting, the risks of one can affect the rest, sharing the risks. This work investigates the use of cloud computing by critical systems, and is focused in the dependencies and reliability of these systems. Some examples are presented together with the associated risks. A framework is introduced for analysing the dependability and resilience of a system that relies on cloud services and how to improve them. As part of the framework, the concepts of micro and macro dependability are introduced to explain the internal and external dependability on services supplied by an external cloud. A pharmacovigilance model system has been used for framework validation.
