Book Synopsis Nondestructive Characterization of Materials VI by : Robert E. Green
Download or read book Nondestructive Characterization of Materials VI written by Robert E. Green and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally the vast majority of materials characterization techniques have been destructive, e. g. , chemical compositional analysis, metallographic determination of microstructure, tensile test measurement of mechanical properties, etc. Also, traditionally, nondestructive techniques have been used almost exclusively for the detection of macroscopic defects, mostly cracks, in structures and devices which have already been constructed and have already been in service for an extended period of time. Following these conventional nondestructive tests, it has been common practice to use somewhat arbitrary accept-reject criteria to decide whether or not the structure or device should be removed from service. The present unfavorable status of a large segment of industry, coupled with the desire to keep structures in service well past their original design life, dramatically show that our traditional approaches must be drastically modified if we are to be able to meet future needs. The role of nondestructive characterization of materials is changing and will continue to change dramatically. It has become increasingly evident that it is both practical and cost effective to expand the role of nondestructive evaluation to include all aspects of materials' production and application and to introduce it much earlier in the manufacturing cycle. In fact, the recovery of a large portion of industry from severe economic problems is dependent, in part, on the successful implementation of this expanded role.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete overview and considerations in process equipment design Handling and storage of large quantities of materials is crucial to the chemical engineering of a wide variety of products. Process Equipment Design explores in great detail the design and construction of the containers – or vessels – required to perform any given task within this field. The book provides an introduction to the factors that influence the design of vessels and the various types of vessels, which are typically classified according to their geometry. The text then delves into design and other considerations for the construction of each type of vessel, providing in the process a complete overview of process equipment design.

Book Synopsis Residual Stress and Stress Relaxation by : Eric Kula
Download or read book Residual Stress and Stress Relaxation written by Eric Kula and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center in coop eration with the Materials Science Group of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science of Syracuse University has been conducting the Annual Sagamore Army Materials Research Conference since 1954. The specific purpose of these conferences has been to bring together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Department of Defense, the Army and the scientific community. These proceedings, entitled RESIDUAL STRESS AND STRESS RELAXATION, address the nature of residual stresses and their measurements, the sources of residual stress, stress relaxation, sub-critical crack growth in the presence of residual stress, residual stresses and properties, and research in progress. We wish to acknowledge the assistance of Mr. Dan McNaught of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center and Mr. Robert J. Sell and Helen Brown DeMascio of Syracuse University throughout the stages of the conference planning and finally the publication of the book. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Dr. E. Wright, Director of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center, is appreciated.

Book Synopsis Experimental Mechanics by : B. E. Rossi
Download or read book Experimental Mechanics written by B. E. Rossi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental Mechanics presents the proceedings of the First International Congress on Experimental Mechanics, held at the Hotel New Yorker in New York City, on November 1–3, 1961. This book presents the application of the methods of experimental mechanics to technical problems. Organized into 21 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the experimental techniques developed for different basic and applied research on strength of materials, performance of hydraulic machinery, and accuracy of mechanisms and machine tools. This text then surveys the developments in the field of mechanical measurements, including rubber gage, bolt gage, digital strain indicators, and waterproofed strain gage. Other chapters consider the experimental study of the transient response of a rocket sled with a vertically malaligned center of gravity. The final chapter deals with the conditions of collapse of stiffened cylindrical shells beyond the proportional limit of the material. Experimental stress analysts will find this book useful.

Book Synopsis Circular Cylinders and Pressure Vessels by : Vincenzo Vullo
Download or read book Circular Cylinders and Pressure Vessels written by Vincenzo Vullo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-29 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive coverage of stress and strain analysis of circular cylinders and pressure vessels, one of the classic topics of machine design theory and methodology. Whereas other books offer only a partial treatment of the subject and frequently consider stress analysis solely in the elastic field, Circular Cylinders and Pressure Vessels broadens the design horizons, analyzing theoretically what happens at pressures that stress the material beyond its yield point and at thermal loads that give rise to creep. The consideration of both traditional and advanced topics ensures that the book will be of value for a broad spectrum of readers, including students in postgraduate, and doctoral programs and established researchers and design engineers. The relations provided will serve as a sound basis for the design of products that are safe, technologically sophisticated, and compliant with standards and codes and for the development of innovative applications.
