Book excerpt: Residual stresses are derived for a transversely anisotropic thick hollow cylinder which has been chemically vapor deposited at an elevated temperature. Such stresses arise because of the differential rates of contraction in the radial and tangential directions and the anisotropic elastic constants. Residual stress distributions for cylinders with a wall ratio (outer to inner radius) of 1.30 of pyrolytic graphite and pyrolytic silicon carbide (alpha SiC) are presented as a function of the radius to inner radius. The effect of the variation of the elastic anisotropy on the tangential stress at the inner and outer radii is presented as a function of the wall ratio. Finally, the tangential and axial stresses at the inner and outer radii and the maximum radial stress of chemically vapor-deposited alpha SiC are presented as a function of the wall ratio.

Book Synopsis Stresses and Strains in Multi-layer Anisotropic Hollow Cylinders by : Norman N. Au
Download or read book Stresses and Strains in Multi-layer Anisotropic Hollow Cylinders written by Norman N. Au and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equations for elastic stresses and strains due to uniform internal and external pressures and an arbitrary radial temperature gradient are derived for a long, hollow, anisotropic, N-layer concentric circular cylinder in generalized plane strain. The anisotropic cylinder is made of materials having three mutually orthogonal planes of elastic symmetry, and the principal axes of anisotropy coincide with the principal axes of the cylinder. The derivation considers the composite cylinder to be made of materials that are layer-wise elastic, homogeneous, and anisotropic. The equations are written in such forms that they are readily applicable, with minor modifications, to the isotropic and monotropic cylinders. Two end conditions are treated: the cylinder with free ends, and the cylinder with a prescribed end force. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of practical configurations in which cylinders of anisotropic, monotropic, and isotropic materials are bonded concentrically in any order to one another. The important effects of anisotropy together with the errors that can result by assuming isotropy for an anisotropic material are discussed. The requirements on physical properties of materials for the purpose of assessing structural integrity of a given design are also delineated. (Author).

Book Synopsis Residual Stresses in Composite Materials by : Mahmood M. Shokrieh
Download or read book Residual Stresses in Composite Materials written by Mahmood M. Shokrieh and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-14 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual stresses are a common phenomenon in composite materials. They can either add to or significantly reduce material strength. Because of the increasing demand for high-strength, light-weight materials such as composites and their wide range of applications in the aerospace and automotive industries, in civil infrastructure and in sporting applications, it is critical that the residual stresses of composite materials are understood and measured correctly. The first part of this important book reviews destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for measuring residual stresses. Various mathematical (analytical and numerical) methods for calculation of residual stresses in composite materials are also presented. Chapters in the first section of the book discuss the simulated hole drilling method, the slitting/crack compliance method, measuring residual stresses in homogeneous and composite glass materials using photoelastic techniques, and modeling residual stresses in composite materials. The second part of the book discusses residual stresses in polymer matrix, metal-matrix and a range of other types of composites. Moreover, the addition of nanoparticles to the matrix of polymeric composites as a new technique for reduction of residual stresses is discussed. Residual stresses in composite materials provides a comprehensive overview of this important topic, and is an invaluable reference text for both academics and professionals working in the mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace, automotive, marine and sporting industries. Reviews destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for measuring residual stresses Discusses residual stresses in polymer matrix, metal-matrix and other types of composite Considers the addition of nanoparticles to the matrix of polymeric composites as a new technique for reduction of residual stresses

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion by : Dan M. Goebel
Download or read book Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion written by Dan M. Goebel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-12-22 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout most of the twentieth century, electric propulsion was considered the technology of the future. Now, the future has arrived. This important new book explains the fundamentals of electric propulsion for spacecraft and describes in detail the physics and characteristics of the two major electric thrusters in use today, ion and Hall thrusters. The authors provide an introduction to plasma physics in order to allow readers to understand the models and derivations used in determining electric thruster performance. They then go on to present detailed explanations of: Thruster principles Ion thruster plasma generators and accelerator grids Hollow cathodes Hall thrusters Ion and Hall thruster plumes Flight ion and Hall thrusters Based largely on research and development performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and complemented with scores of tables, figures, homework problems, and references, Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion: Ion and Hall Thrusters is an indispensable textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students who are preparing to enter the aerospace industry. It also serves as an equally valuable resource for professional engineers already at work in the field.
