The model, Simulation of Flood Control and Conservation Systems (Including Water Quality Analysis), HEC-5Q, provides a comprehensive water quantity model with fairly simple water quality routines. The HEC-5Q can evaluate how to operate each reservoir in a system for the best overall regulation to meet both water quantity and water quality objectives at all points of interest in the system. An overview is provided of the model capabilities and concepts regarding method of regulation analysis. A maximum of eight water quality parameters can be analyzed. These include water temperature, a maximum of three conservative and three non-conservative parameters, and dissolved oxygen. The planned future development and availability is discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: A reservoir system analysis computer model has been recently developed with the capability to simulate up to 10 reservoirs, 30 control points and 8 water quality parameters. With this model the user can evaluate a 'best' system operation analysis for multipurpose reservoir regulation to obtain target water quality conditions at user specified control points. The model uses a linear programming algorithm to evaluate the 'best' system operation among all the reservoirs and a nonlinear routine for operation of multilevel intakes at any one reservoir in the system. The user may select to operate the system for a balanced reservoir pool operation and its associated water quality or to allow for a modified for distribution between reservoirs to improve the water quality operation. The water quality routines are capable of analyzing water temperature and up to three conservative and three nonconservative constitutents. If at least one of the nonconservative constitutents is an oxygen demanding parameter, dissolved oxygen can also be analyzed.

In addition, induced surcharge operation based on spillway gate regulation schedules can be simulated. Hydropower analysis may include run-of-river, peaking, and pumped storage plants as well as system power operation. Water Quality analysis can include simulation of temperature, dissolved oxygen, up to three conservative and up to three nonconservative constituents. The HEC-5Q program was first applied to the Sacramento River System in California and a report was published in July 1985. Two other applications are in progress the Kanawha and Monongahela River systems, and are expected to be completed by September 1986.
