Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Notes on the Treatment of Deformities Having held the office of Resident House Surgeon to the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital for ten years, and having been also, during a great part of that time, assistant-surgeon, I have enjoyed considerable opportunities of studying practically the different kinds of deformities that have passed through the Hospital. It is not my object to repeat, with respect to the pathology or causes of deformities, what has been so well written in other works on Orthopaedic Surgery, but rather to state, in a short space, what methods of treatment I have found from personal experience to be best adapted for the relief or cure of the more common forms; pointing out where I myself have found most difficulties, and what means I have found best calculated to surmount them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Surgery of Deformities: A Manual for Students and Practitioners IN the preparation of this manual my intention has been to produce a practical and useful guide to the diagnosis and treatment of Deformities of the Human Body. I have, there fore, confined myself as much as possible to the discussion of those methods of treatment from which I have witnessed the best results, both in my own practice and in that of other surgeons. I have not neglected to acquaint myself with the various standard works and monographs which treat, either incidentally or Specially, of Orthopaedic Surgery; thus I have collected together most of the more important improvements in practice and additions to our knowledge which have been. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Deformities of the Human Foot: With Their Treatment During the thirteen years I have had charge of the Orthopaedic Department at St. Bartholomews Hospital I have given, each winter and summer session, a series of demonstrations on the various deformities that there more especially come under notice, and I have been frequently asked by my dressers and the senior students attending these demonstrations to publish in book-form the substance of my remarks. Press of work alone prevented me from complying with their request. In 1892, however, my then senior dresser or clinical assistant, Mr. Kent Hughes, kindly offered to help me if I would bring out such a book, and undertook the entire labour of looking up references, and of collecting facts and verifying results of treatment, by working through the ten yearly volumes of bound orthopaedic letters. He also undertook to superintend the taking of photographs from patients in the department, and from casts and specimens in the museum. Conjointly, therefore, with Mr. Kent Hughes I started to write a book on Orthopaedic Surgery, but some six months after it had been actively begun, Mr. Kent Hughes found that he would have to leave for his home in Australia a year or so earlier than he had at first intended. As I felt that without his aid it would be long before I could hope to finish the task on the lines laid down, we determined to confine our attention to Deformities of the Foot, the section in which we had made most progress. Hence the appearance of the present volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Dr. Price was 75 years ahead of his time. In this book, he demonstrates that isolated groups of people living in accordance with Nature have the best overall physical and mental health. Diseases inflicting “modern” humans are unheard of in most of these study groups. Dr. Weston Andrew Price, DDS, was called the “Isaac Newton of Nutrition” and the “Darwin of Nutrition.” This edition of Dr. Price’s classic is modernized with the epub format. It is easier to read on smartphones and tablets. It also includes updated statistics and additional images. Dr. Price shows that illness, disease, behavior, criminality, anemia, voice, and even cheek-line, are all within the domain of Nutrition. “If civilized man is to survive, he must incorporate the fundamentals of primitive nutritional wisdom into his modern lifestyle.” —Dr. Weston A. Price, DDS

This book was released on 2020-07-12 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two programs that provide disability benefits: the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. SSDI provides disability benefits to people (under the full retirement age) who are no longer able to work because of a disabling medical condition. SSI provides income assistance for disabled, blind, and aged people who have limited income and resources regardless of their prior participation in the labor force. Both programs share a common disability determination process administered by SSA and state agencies as well as a common definition of disability for adults: "the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months." Disabled workers might receive either SSDI benefits or SSI payments, or both, depending on their recent work history and current income and assets. Disabled workers might also receive benefits from other public programs such as workers' compensation, which insures against work-related illness or injuries occurring on the job, but those other programs have their own definitions and eligibility criteria. Selected Health Conditions and Likelihood of Improvement with Treatment identifies and defines the professionally accepted, standard measurements of outcomes improvement for medical conditions. This report also identifies specific, long-lasting medical conditions for adults in the categories of mental health disorders, cancers, and musculoskeletal disorders. Specifically, these conditions are disabling for a length of time, but typically don't result in permanently disabling limitations; are responsive to treatment; and after a specific length of time of treatment, improve to the point at which the conditions are no longer disabling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark book is the first comprehensive edited volume on body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a common and severe disorder. People with BDD are preoccupied with distressing or impairing preoccupations with non-existent or slight defects in their physical appearance. People with BDD think that they look ugly -- even monstrous -- although they look normal to others. BDD often derails sufferers' lives and can lead to suicide. BDD has been described around the world since the 1800s but was virtually unknown and unstudied until only several decades ago. Since then, research on BDD has dramatically increased understanding of this often-debilitating condition. Only recently, BDD was considered untreatable, but today, most sufferers can be successfully treated. This is the only book that provides comprehensive, in-depth, up-to-date information on BDD's clinical features, history, classification, epidemiology, morbidity, features in special populations, diagnosis and assessment, etiology and pathophysiology, treatment, and relationship to other disorders. Numerous chapters focus on cosmetic treatment, because it is frequently received but usually ineffective for BDD, which can lead to legal action and even violence toward treating clinicians. The book includes numerous clinical cases, which illustrate BDD's clinical features, its often-profound consequences, and recommended treatment approaches. This volume's contributors are the leading researchers and clinicians in this rapidly expanding field. Editor Katharine A. Phillips, head of the DSM-V committee on BDD, has done pioneering research on many aspects of this disorder, including its treatment. This book will be of interest to all clinicians who provide mental health treatment and to researchers in BDD, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and other obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. It will be indispensable to surgeons, dermatologists, and other clinicians who provide cosmetic treatment. Students and trainees with an interest in psychology and mental health will also be interested in this book. This book fills a major gap in the literature by providing clinicians and researchers with cutting-edge, indispensable information on all aspects of BDD and its treatment.
