Book excerpt: Excerpt from Researches Into the Anatomy and Pathology of the Eye This book is composed of those lectures, together with a few additions which the time at my disposal did not permit of my including in them. These additions are the last part of Chapter II., the first half of Chapter IV., and the whole of Chapter VIII. I have not attempted to treat of the subjects dealt with in a systematic way, but have written on those points only on which I felt I had something new, that was worth saying, to fellow workers in my profession. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology of the Eye The organization of the Eye, and its beautiful adaptation to the wants and necessities "of every living thing," has always been a subject sufficiently attractive to secure attention and respect from the most thoughtless and indifferent; from those even, who in other respects, are disposed to forget the wonderful nature of their creation, the fearful construction of every organ and sense with which they are endowed. On an inquiry which possesses so many attractions to the general Student, some feelings of diffidence might be fairly expressed by a writer, when committing his thoughts to the criticism of the public; but the fears of the author rise into anxiety, when he invites the attention of the Faculty to a work, which not only treats generally, of the Organ of Vision, but professes to inquire critically, into its Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathology. Here we have the same problems of anatomy and of physiology, but complicated by the presence of certain unknown and variable factors which we call disease. In order to solve these prob lems, the general knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the muscles possessed by the average ophthalmologist is by no means sufficient. The Optic nerve sheath consists of two layers, an inner fibrous layer, an outer fibrous layer, with a layer of cellular tissue between them. Its structure will be considered hereafter, and is referred to here to aid in the description of the Optic nerve entrance, which is a point possessing considerable pathologi caalfll'mportancc in connection with glaucomatous conditions. Donders says, that of the two layers of the Optic nerve Sheath, the outer, with its vessels and nerves, penetrates two-thirds of the thickness of the sclerotica, whilst the inner. Layer immedi ately proceeds behind the choroid, with which some of its fibres unite, and turns outward, and is expanded on the inner surface of the sclerotica. From it, however, a number of elas tic elements proceed, and pass between the individual Optic nerve bundles, to form the so-called lamina cribrosa, which is connected with but a small portion of the choroid. At this point the Optic nerve is only and exclusively surrounded by the' firm, cellular texture of the sclerotica. The arteria and uena centralis retinoe also pass through the lamina cribrosa, causing the largest Opening in the cribriform lamina, which is some times called porus opticus. Around the Optic nerve entrance the sclerotica is also perforated by the long and Short ciliary arteries, some venous branches, and by the ciliary nerves. In the region Of' the equator bulbi it is perforated by the uasa vorticosa of the choidea, and around the corneal border the arteria and venue ciliares anticce perforate it.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy and Histology of the Human Eyeball in the Normal State: Its Development and Senescence As in the case with so many other books, this one has developed from the lectures which I have regularly given for years, and I only comply with an oft-exprcssed wish of my auditors when I put the substance of these lectures into print from the same point of view as the one by which I have allowed myself to be guided in the lectures. This point of view is that a thorough knowledge of the normal anatomy and histology gives the most certain basis for the understanding of methods of clinical investigation and for judging pathologic changes - hence the reference to ophthalmoscopy, to the physiology of accommodation, and to pathologic processes here and there. I should like to have the book considered from the point of view that it is the eye specialist and not the specialist in anatomy who writes it. For example, I have not gone into comparative anatomy in a detailed way. Important as this is for the determination of morphologic questions and much as I am personally interested in it, I hold it to be superfluous for the purpose at hand to enter into this branch of learning. Naturally, therefore, some details of cell-structure, nerve-endings, and the like, which for technical reasons one can study only on animals, are treated only briefly. Probably no one will find fault with me because I have not encumbered the book with the ballast of a complete reference to the literature. Such would stand in no relation to the compass of the text, which I have made as compact as possible. Extended references to the literature arc to be found in the most cited articles, especially in the corresponding chapters of the Graeje-Saemisch Handbuch. On the other hand, I will not deny that any choice from our enormously swollen literature is an arbitrary one. Forgiveness is herewith implored in advance, from whomsoever feels slighted in this respect. One cannot be original in a subject which has been so much worked in its entirety and in detail. Content and method of expression must necessarily move in the same paths as those to which the earlier works have held. At the same time I feel I may say that I have not simply copied from others, but that my descriptions and my drawings have been made true to nature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reflections on the Anatomy and Physiology of Some Parts of the Eye Ex President of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, Vice President of the American Medical Association. It is now nearly a quarter of a century since I published, in the American Journal of the Medical Science, certain anatomical and physiological reflections on some important parts of the human eye; and I design, upon the present occasion, to reproduce for your con sideration these investigations in a more particular and, I think, at tractive form. Especially do I do this because I recognize the fact that the epin ions I then expressed, are beginning to receive the sanction of the profession in Europe as well as in this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Embryology, Anatomy and Histology of the Eye: With Illustrations Made From Transverse Sections of the Human Eye Enlarged by Micro Photography, the Physiology of Vision In approaching this work, perhaps a word of explanation to the reader may be desirable. It is not undertaken because the author thinks there is a lack of knowledge about the eye; neither have there been any new facts discovered which would merit the production of these articles. It is therefore not the intention to bring out any new facts, but to put the known and widely scattered facts in a more comprehensible form and to illustrate the subject so thoroughly and completely that it will be made more easy for the beginner and more interesting to those who find it necessary to review the subject. All the illustrations of the structures of the eyeball and smaller structures will be microphotographs taken from microscopic slides in the author's possession, while the coarser structures of the orbit will be illustrated by drawings, as these structures are too large for the tissues to be mounted on microscopic slides. The microscopic slides used to photograph the foetal eye are from the pig and were procured at the Armour packing house by collecting the foetal pigs at the gutting table. These foetesis ran from two millimeters to forty millimeters in length, and the mounting of the slides was done by Dr. Slonaker, at the Chicago University. The slides used in photographing the adult eye were made by Dr. Slonaker when he wrote his thesis on the acute area of vision. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pathology of the Eye, Vol. 1: Histology; Part I No complete monograph on the Pathology of the Eye has yet been written in any language. Various attempts have been made from time to time to describe and illustrate the chief facts of the pathological histology by Wedl (1860), O. Becker (1874), Pagenstecher & Genth (1878), Alt (1880), Wedl & Bock (1886), Greeff (1902), Ginsberg (1903), and others. All of these, with the exception of Ginsberg's Manual and the incomplete work of Greeff, are inadequate and out of date; and even the latter works are not available for all English-speaking ophthalmologists. The object of this treatise is to give as complete an account of the Pathology of the Eye as is possible in the present state of our knowledge. It may be reasonably asserted that the time is not ripe for such a work, and as far as dogmatic finality is concerned this is true There are few, however, who will not admit the urgent need of gathering together the grains of knowledge which we possess, and winnowing them of the chaff of futile conjecture and discredited theory. It must be admitted with regret that few of the problems before us have been solved. I shall therefore endeavour to set forth the facts which have been discovered, and which have been recorded in the various European and American scientific journals. The various theories based upon these facts will be reviewed and weighed, with the object of determining their relative value, and of arriving at the best working hypotheses for directing future research. It is not to be expected that my deductions will meet with unqualified approval. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy of the Human Eye as Illustrated by Enlarged Stereoscopic Photographs To the Delegates Of the University Press I am greatly indebted for the generous assistance they have rendered in the production of this work. The Public hardly realizes how much the University does through the agency of this Delegacy for the encouragement of scholarship and research, since without such help much unremunerative work would remain unpublished. To Mr. W. Chesterman, my Museum Assistant, I am greatly obliged for the skill and patience which he has displayed in carrying out my instructions: without his co-operation it would have been wellnigh impossible for me to have attained the present results. I have also to thank my Senior Demonstrator, Mr. S. E. Whitnall, m.e., for his aid in revising the proof-sheets.
