The study consisted of reviewing published information, determining physical properties of jet fuels, performing electrokinetic experiments, studying the coalescence of drops on single fibers and in packed fiber beds, studying the Water Separometer, and evaluating new and used DOD filter/separator elements in a test stand. In the work effects of fuel additives and/or contaminants on the coalescence of free water from jet fuel were determined in most of the studies. Additional work was done on determining the physical properties of fuel and anti-icing additive systems and also the water distribution in fiber-bed coalescers. (Author).

In the study water separation methods measurements were for the first time experimentally compared against actual coalescence test results. This program was part of an extended study both of ways to improve the ASTM D 3948 MSEP test method and of the effectiveness of other water separation test methods. The effect of fuel quality on coalescence was measured in the Navy Coalescence Tester (NCT) using jet fuel field samples and jet fuel samples prepared to simulate additive and contamination effects. The jet fuels evaluated in the NCT were then tested using the various water separation test methods, and the results compared against the actual coalescence results. The Interface Rating for the ASTM D 1094 Water Reaction Test was found to be non-responsive to any change in fuel coalescence quality. Thus, the D 1094 Interface rating results from this study clearly fail to show any evidence of test validity. The other test methods evaluated all showed a response to variations in fuel coalescence quality. Results of regression analyses of the other water separation methods test results against NCT continuous coalescence times were used to statistically compare the effectiveness of various tests.

Book excerpt: The effect of corrosion inhibitors on filtration and water separation characteristics of JP-4 fuel was studied in a single-element filter separator test facility, using five types of commercial elements and housings designed to simulate full-scale flow conditions. Standard coarse A/C dust and water were used as test contaminants; a brief study was made using iron oxides. Adverse effects of the corrosion inhibitors varied widely, and the element types differed in efficiency and modes of failure. The CRC water separometer, a bench-scale apparatus, gave a general correlation with the singleelement results. Interaction of additives with fuel constituents caused difficulty in early work, but otherwise the separometer repeatability was satisfactory. Preliminary work on a reference fluid indicated that an "odorless solvent" may be suitable
