Book excerpt: The program is divided into two tasks. The objective of Task A is to optimize the properties of aluminum alloys by controlling the concentrations and sizes of the small, intermediate, and large precipitates. Systematic variations in chemistry and also in the homogenization and aging treatments have provided a range of concentrations and sizes of the various precipitates in a series of alloys based on the 7075 and 2024 alloy compositions. Procedures for fracture toughness measurements of thin sheet material have been developed. Fatigue tests have also been conducted. The objective of Task B is to develop a recrystallized microstructure in wrought high-strength aluminum alloys during hot working. The desired microstructure is being sought by control of hot-working conditions and also control of alloy composition. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: The effects of deformation parameters on the tendency of 2024 aluminum alloy to recrystallize either during hot working or during subsequent solution heat treatment were examined. Samples were upset under controlled conditions in the Gleeble programmed thermal-mechanical test machine. The behavior of homogenized 2024 was compared with that of a high purity Al-4.6Cu alloy and with cast 2024 and 2124. Based on the Gleeble results, hot rolling procedures were designed for producing a fine equiaxed grain structure in sheet rolled from either homogenized 2024 or cast 2124. A limited quantity of sheet was rolled according to these procedures and evaluated to determine tensile and fatigue properties. (Author).

Book excerpt: The effects of the various small, intermediate, and large precipitates on the fracture toughness and fatigue properties of aluminum alloys based on the 2024 and 7075 compositions were studied. Different concentrations and sizes of the precipitates were obtained by systematic variations in the chemical composition and also in the homogenization and aging treatments. The roles of the various precipitates in deformation and fracture were determined by slip-line and fractographic studies, and these results were carefully correlated with the fracture toughness data. The dispersion hardening effect of the intermediate precipitates appeared to have only a minor effect on the fracture toughness of both alloys, but the intermediate precipitates did exert a major indirect effect on the fracture toughness of the 7000-series specimens because of their effect on recrystallization and grain size. As expected, the large precipitates formed during ingot solidification were detrimental to both alloys. The fatigue properties of the 2000-series alloys appeared to be relatively insensitive to the range of metallurgical variables investigated, but significant improvements were obtained in the 7000-series specimens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Its high alloying makes it prone to solidification defects. Thus, plastic deformation is required to close shrinkage porosity, making this alloy for wrought products only. Moreover, this alloy has a limit of maximum Mg content at 1.8% as a high Mg content would form bulky Al2CuMg phase in the matrix, which has a limited solubility during solutionizing. Nanoparticles successfully reduced the solidification defects and greatly recovered the ductility of the cast alloy. In summary, this dissertation first discussed a new interface-controlled mechanism for in-situ synthesis of ceramic nanoparticles to build a solid foundation for economical nano-treating of molten metals. Then the nano-treating effects on solidification and heat treatment were systematically studied. Finally, two critical effects from nano-treating were summarized: "antibody effect" to enable scalable manufacturing of various high-strength aluminum alloys without cracking and shrinkage porosities and "vitamin effect" to improve microstructure and properties of alloys. The effects were successfully demonstrated to develop and manufacture high-performance aluminum alloys: manufacturing high-strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy, natural aging to AA7075 welds with nano-treated welding wires, and casting of high-strength Al-Cu-Mg alloys.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In dispersion strengthened high temperature alloys the particle radius is theoretically predicted to be proportional to (Sigma DC sub 0 1/3 where sigma is the interfacial energy, D, the diffusivity, C sub 0 the solubility limit and t is time. Thus, information about sigma, D, and C sub 0 are needed to design and evaluate high temperature alloys. The A1-8Fe-3Ce alloy developed by Alcoa Research center is being studied on this basis. Assuming diffusion of iron is rate controlling, values of sigma are calculated indicating an incoherent interface; however, the coarsening is more complex than predicted by the simple theory. Low values of sigma are expected when there is good lattice matching across the interface. A13(Ti, Zr, Hf) is being studied seeking good lattice matching. A13, (Ti, Zr), A13(Ti, Hf), A13(Zr, Hf) have been studied to date and the best matching is obtained with A13(Ti0.75 Zr0.25) where the lattice mismatch between the compound and aluminum is 3-4%. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1998, Prof. Sergey Firstov invited me to the Frantcevych Institute for Problems of Materials Science (IPMS) in Kyiv, Ukraine to discuss possible collaborations in the area of advanced metals research. During this visit, a strong mutual interest was evident in a broad range of structural metals technologies, and a quick friendship was established. Countless subsequent emails and a reciprocal visit to the U. S Air Force Research Laboratory by Prof. Firstov and a team of scientists from IPMS ensued to discuss and detail a broad collaboration in the area of structural metals. Two years after the initial visit, a major investment by the U. S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) was established to pursue the technologies defined by these interactions. The annual reviews of the AFOSR Ukrainian Metals Initiative were held in late May, a most beautiful time in Kyiv when the lilacs are in bright display and the air is scented with the smell of falling blossoms from the chestnut trees that line the major streets and many parks. The sunny days and mild evenings provide a welcome break from winter, and on weekend evenings festive crowds spill onto the Khreshchatyk, Kyiv’s downtown boulevard, to listen to street musicians, watch jugglers and comedians, or simply to celebrate with friends. The annual reviews featured long days of intensive discussion of technical progress, followed in the evenings by the warm hospitality of the Ukrainian hosts.

Book excerpt: High-strength Al(O) alloys, initially discovered by ion implantation, have now been produced with electron-cyclotron resonance plasma deposition and pulsed-laser deposition. The mechanical properties of these deposited alloy layers were examined with nanoindentation, and finite element modeling of the indented layer on Si substrates was used to determine yield stresses for the alloys of[approximately] 1--5 GPa. The key to these high strengths is the high density of nanometer-size[gamma]-Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] precipitates formed when high concentrations (5--30 at.%) of oxygen are introduced into aluminum as individual atoms or molecules. The strongest alloys have precipitates as small as 1 nm, implying that such small precipitates block dislocation motion. Based upon previous studies with oxygen-implanted aluminum, improved tribological properties are expected for layers made by the two new deposition methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this research was to understand how chemistry and processing affect the resulting microstructure and mechanical properties of high strength cast aluminum alloys. Two alloy systems were investigated including the Al-Cu-Ag and the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu systems. Processing variables included solidification under pressure (SUP) and heat treatment. This research determined the range in properties that can be achieved in BAC 100TM (Al-Cu micro-alloyed with Ag, Mn, Zr, and V) and generated sufficient property data for design purposes. Tensile, stress corrosion cracking, and fatigue testing were performed. CuAl2 and Al-Cu-Fe-Mn intermetallics were identified as the ductility limiting flaws. A solution treatment of 75 hours or longer was needed to dissolve most of the intermetallic CuAl2. The Al-Cu-Fe-Mn intermetallic was unaffected by heat treatment. These results indicate that faster cooling rates, a reduction in copper concentration and a reduction in iron concentration might increase the ductility of the alloy by decreasing the size and amount of the intermetallics that form during solidification. Six experimental Al-Zn-Mg-Cu series alloys were produced. Zinc concentrations of 8 and 12wt% and Zn/Mg ratios of 1.5 to 5.5 were tested. Copper was held constant at 0.9%. Heat treating of the alloys was optimized for maximum hardness. Al-Zn-Mg-Cu samples were solution treated at 441°C (826°F) for 4 hours before ramping to 460°C (860°F) for 75 hours and then aged at 120°C (248°F) for 75 hours. X-ray diffraction showed that the age hardening precipitates in most of these alloys was the T phase (Mg32Zn31.9Al17.1). Tensile testing of the alloys showed that the best mechanical properties were obtained in the lowest alloy condition. Chilled Al-8.2Zn-1.4Mg-0.9Cu solidified under pressure resulted in an alloy with a yield strength of 468MPa (68ksi), tensile strength of 525MPa (76ksi) and an elongation of 9%.

In the first stage, processing parameters were established for the preparation of duplex alloys. A program of basic research has been undertaken with the overall goal of establishing quantitative processing-microstructure-mechanical behavior relationships in fully-dense Al-Zn-Mg/Mn modified alloys produced by powder metallurgy. Initial attention has been directed to Mn-Si and Mn-Cr modifications, powder processing, consolidation, mechanical property and corrosion response. Mechanical properties and microstructures have been characterized in the powder in extrusions and correlated with microstructures. Keywords: High modulus aluminum, Manganese addition, Aluminum alloy 7075, Extrusion, Corrosion testing, Microstructure correlation.
