Download or read book Assessment of Potential Chatham Island Snipe Habitat on Pitt Island written by Colin Miskelly and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After its 2006 meeting, the Chatham Island Snipe Recovery Group recommended that a habitat assessment of the predator-fenced portion of Ellen Elizabeth Preece Conservation Covenant (EEPCC) on Pitt Island be undertaken to determine its suitability for Chatham Island snipe (Coenocorypha pusilla). Fieldwork was carried out on 19-26 February 2007, both in EEPCC and in Woolshed Bush, Rangatira (South East Island), where snipe are abundant. Soil samples were collected from six matched microhabitats in EEPCC and in Woolshed Bush: beside rotting wood, beside petrel burrows, and beneath sedges, grass, herb mats, and ferns. Invertebrates were hand-sorted from the soil samples and identified to species where possible, and the biomass of soil-dwelling invertebrates (wet weight) was measured for each sample. Total numbers of invertebrates were very similar for the two islands: 2465 for Pitt Island and 2284 for Rangatira. There was also no significant difference between the islands in overall biomass (14.8 g for Pitt Island and 9.7 g for Rangatira) or biomass in any of the six microhabitats, although one microhabitat (soil beside petrel burrows) did have a higher mean number of individuals on Pitt Island than on Rangatira (n = 121 v. 26, respectively), due entirely to large numbers of tiny enchytraeid worms. It was found that there was abundant cover for snipe to nest, roost, and forage in EEPCC. We conclude that EEPCC should provide excellent habitat for Chatham Island snipe. There are no threatened invertebrate species known to be present in EEPCC that would be at risk following snipe introduction.

Book excerpt: Few books in publishing history created such excitement in advance of publication as My Life with Jacqueline Kennedy. A small portion of the book, appearing in serial form, produced a wave of press speculation throughout the world and whetted the anticipation of readers everywhere for the whole story. And only by reading the complete book can the complexities of the former Jacqueline Kennedy's personality and life be fully understood. This book reveals Jacqueline Kennedy as a real person -- as a wife, as a mother, as a seeker of perfection in art and life. And, it describes her brilliant refurbishing of The White House, where Mary worked closely with her in the Family Quarters. For the light it sheds on crucial years inAmerican history and on Jacqueline Kennedy, this book is unique. It takes us back to Camelot and shows the real woman beneath the goddess-figure the world's idolatry made her.Nearly a half-century has passed since the original publication of MyLife with Jacqueline Kennedy in 1969; therefore, its reissuance at this time is deemed appropriate for the benefit of all future generations in their overall understanding of this historical, interesting Kennedy Era.

Book Synopsis Toward Social Economy by : Howard Rothmann Bowen
Download or read book Toward Social Economy written by Howard Rothmann Bowen and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reprinting of Professor Bowen's classic 1948 work inaugurates a new series “Political and Social Economy.” The series will be devoted to developing a literature reflecting a humanistic point of view in economics and economic theory. It will include reprints and commissioned new works espousing a diversity of similarly broad-gauged and frequently nontraditional points of view. Its objective—implicit in the series title—is to increase the angle of vision of economics. The purpose of Professor Bowen's Toward Social Economy, stated in the Preface to the first edition, is “to present a view of the whole economic system, and at the same time to fit that system into place as one part or aspect of the more comprehensive social fabric.” It provides a framework of a complete course in economics for the general reader as well as the student of economics. C. Addison Hickman, the coeditor of this significant new series, has contributed a Foreword reflecting on the importance and contemporary relevance of Professor Bowen's work and making a case for a broad viewpoint in the formulation of economic theory and public policy.
