This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the leading role played by nursing science in the European Nordic countries. Recognized leaders in nursing research from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, reflect on the leadership of nurses, the societal developments and the state of nursing science in their country, and the successes and remaining challenges nurses are facing. The book highlights representative leadership projects focusing on e.g. evidenced-based clinical practice, education and research that have impacted patient and healthcare outcomes in each country. The book shows how nursing, as a scientific discipline, has been developing rapidly in these five Nordic countries. They have more nurses per capita than other countries (OECD 2016) and healthcare is provided to all citizens. Moreover, nursing qualification in the Nordic countries was based on university education early on, and there are more professors of nursing than in other countries. Accordingly, this book on Leadership in nursing within the Nordic countries shares essential and pioneering expertise that will benefit nurses and nurse scientists around the globe.
Book Synopsis Great Powers, Climate Change, and Global Environmental Responsibilities by : Robert Falkner
Download or read book Great Powers, Climate Change, and Global Environmental Responsibilities written by Robert Falkner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-10 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of its kind to examine the role of great powers in the international politics of climate change. It develops a novel analytical framework for studying environmental power in international relations, what counts as a great power in the environmental field, and what their special environmental responsibilities are. In doing so, the book connects International Relations (IR) debates on power inequality, great powers and great power management, with global environmental politics (GEP) scholarship. The book brings together leading scholars in IR and GEP whose contributions focus on major environmental powers (United States, China, European Union, India, Brazil, Russia) and international institutions and issue areas (UN Security Council, multilateral environmental agreements, international climate leadership, coal politics). The contributors to this volume examine how individual great powers have responded to the global climate challenge and whether they have accepted a special responsibility for stabilizing the global climate. They place emerging discourses on great power responsibility in the context of wider debates about international environmental leadership and climate change securitization. And they provide new insights into how international power inequality intersects with the global ecological crisis, and what special role great powers could and should play in the international fight against global warming.

Book Synopsis ESG and Responsible Institutional Investing Around the World: A Critical Review by : Pedro Matos
Download or read book ESG and Responsible Institutional Investing Around the World: A Critical Review written by Pedro Matos and published by CFA Institute Research Foundation. This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This survey examines the vibrant academic literature on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing. While there is no consensus on the exact list of ESG issues, responsible investors increasingly assess stocks in their portfolios based on nonfinancial data on environmental impact (e.g., carbon emissions), social impact (e.g., employee satisfaction), and governance attributes (e.g., board structure). The objective is to reduce exposure to investments that pose greater ESG risks or to influence companies to become more sustainable. One active area of research at present involves assessing portfolio risk exposure to climate change. This literature review focuses on institutional investors, which have grown in importance such that they have now become the largest holders of shares in public companies globally. Historically, institutional investors tended to concentrate their ESG efforts mostly on corporate governance (the “G” in ESG). These efforts included seeking to eliminate provisions that restrict shareholder rights and enhance managerial power, such as staggered boards, supermajority rules, golden parachutes, and poison pills. Highlights from this section: · There is no consensus on the exact list of ESG issues and their materiality. · The ESG issue that gets the most attention from institutional investors is climate change, in particular their portfolio companies’ exposure to carbon risk and “stranded assets.” · Investors should be positioning themselves for increased regulation, with the regulatory agenda being more ambitious in the European Union than in the United States. Readers might come away from this survey skeptical about the potential for ESG investing to affect positive change. I prefer to characterize the current state of the literature as having a “healthy dose of skepticism,” with much more remaining to be explored. Here, I hope the reader comes away with a call to action. For the industry practitioner, I believe that the investment industry should strive to achieve positive societal goals. CFA Institute provides an exemplary case in its Future of Finance series (www.cfainstitute.org/research/future-finance). For the academic community, I suggest we ramp up research aimed at tackling some of the open questions around the pressing societal goals of ESG investing. I am optimistic that practitioners and academics will identify meaningful ways to better harness the power of global financial markets for addressing the pressing ESG issues facing our society.

Book Synopsis The Status of Marine Fisheries in East Asia by : Daniel Pauly
Download or read book The Status of Marine Fisheries in East Asia written by Daniel Pauly and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2022-05-24 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fisheries of China generate the largest catch in the world. However, these fisheries are in generally bad shape, notably due to lack of management systems based on rigorous studies on the dynamics of major stocks exploited by the fisheries of China and neighboring countries. This could be mitigated, at least in part, by the systematic application of newly developed methods for evaluating the status of exploited fish stocks for use in data-sparse situations, focusing on methods for estimating maximum sustainable yield (MSY) from catch informed by a combination of biological knowledge on the species (intrinsic rate of population increase, r, and carrying capacity, k) and what is known about the stock, for instance relative abundance indicators, e.g., catch per unit of effort. The aim of this Research Topic is to create an outlet for the studies that will result from the application of these modern methods to exploited stocks of East Asian marine fish, encouraging the rigorous evaluation of these stocks and providing a basis for their rebuilding, as required especially for Chinese stocks. This would lead to the creation of a cadre of fishery scientists knowledgeable in using the methods in question and interested in collaborating with colleagues in other regions with similar issues. Focusing on East Asia will reinforce to readers in `the West' that these fisheries are not a sideshow to the more interesting fisheries in Europe or North America, but a major source of seafood for people in East Asia. Indeed, the failure of these domestic fisheries would increase the impacts of distant-water fisheries from East Asia in other parts of the world.
Book Synopsis The Potential Effects and Mechanisms of Chinese Traditional Medicine on Bone Homeostasis and Remodeling by : Jun Liu
Download or read book The Potential Effects and Mechanisms of Chinese Traditional Medicine on Bone Homeostasis and Remodeling written by Jun Liu and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease, strongly affecting postmenopausal women and characterized by an increased risk of bone fragility and a decrease in bone mass. Bone homeostasis requires a balance between bone-forming osteoblasts and bone-resorbing osteoclasts. When this balance is impaired, normal bone remodelling cannot keep bone mass stable, leading to osteopenia and osteoporosis. About 30–50% of all women in the world suffer from fractures due to osteoporosis throughout their lives. The treatments include improving metabolic abnormalities through complementary and alternative therapies, drug application and surgical therapy for the management of overweight, obesity and hormone metabolism disorder. Chinese traditional medicine has been increasingly considered as an effective therapy for osteoporosis. A series of formulae, herbs and natural products have been indicated for their effects in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, such as Liu-Wei-Di-Huang Wan (formula), Morindae Officinalis Radix (herb), Longspur epimedium glycoside (natural product). However, the mechanisms of action remain largely unexplored.
Book Synopsis Inflammation in Skin-Related Diseases by : Chunmeng Shi
Download or read book Inflammation in Skin-Related Diseases written by Chunmeng Shi and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-08-21 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been revealed that inflammation plays an important role in the progression of skin-related diseases, including burn or trauma wounds, diabetes wounds, pressure ulcers, radiation ulcers, keloids, hypertrophic scars, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo, etc, causing skin tissue to exhibit over-inflammation, lower inflammation, or chronic inflammation. During this process, bacteria invasion, microbiota dysbiosis, or autoimmunity are known as the general initiators to induce the abnormal activity of immune cells and molecules and could change the crosstalk between immune cells and repair cells (or interstitial cells). Therefore, the research deep into the novel mechanisms of inflammation, the new signal pathway of immunity chain responses, or the new relationship between inflammation and repair cells, is of great interest for the design of novel therapies for skin-related diseases.
