Download or read book Told After Supper written by Jerome Klapka Jerome and published by Castrovilli Giuseppe. This book was released on 1891 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Told After Supper are stories all taking place on Christmas Eve. The Introduction says 'All these things happen on Christmas Eve, they are all told of on Christmas Eve. For ghost stories to be told on any other evening than the evening of the twenty-fourth of December would be impossible in English society as at present regulated. Therefore, in introducing the sad but authentic ghost stories that follow hereafter, I feel that it is unnecessary to inform the student of Anglo-Saxon literature that the date on which they were told and on which the incidents took place was--Christmas Eve." Stories included in this collection are How the Stories came to be told, Teddy Biffles' Story--Johnson and Emily; or, the Faithful Ghost, The Doctor's Story, Mr. Coombe's Story--The Haunted Mill; or, the Ruined Home, My Uncle's Story--The Ghost of the Blue Chamber, A Personal Explanation, and My Own Story"--

Book Synopsis American Planters and Irish Landlords in Comparative and Transnational Perspective by : Cathal Smith
Download or read book American Planters and Irish Landlords in Comparative and Transnational Perspective written by Cathal Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-14 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first study to systematically explore similarities, differences, and connections between the histories of American planters and Irish landlords. The book focuses primarily on the comparative and transnational investigation of an antebellum Mississippi planter named John A. Quitman (1799–1858) and a nineteenth-century Irish landlord named Robert Dillon, Lord Clonbrock (1807–93), examining their economic behaviors, ideologies, labor relations, and political histories. Locating Quitman and Clonbrock firmly within their wider local, national, and international contexts, American Planters and Irish Landlords in Comparative and Transnational Perspective argues that the two men were representative of specific but comparable manifestations of agrarian modernity, paternalism, and conservatism that became common among the landed elites who dominated economy, society, and politics in the antebellum American South and in nineteenth-century Ireland. It also demonstrates that American planters and Irish landlords were connected by myriad direct and indirect transnational links between their societies, including transatlantic intellectual cultures, mutual participation in global capitalism, and the mass migration of people from Ireland to the United States that occurred during the nineteenth century.
Book Synopsis Thomas Carlyle and the Idea of Influence by : Paul E. Kerry
Download or read book Thomas Carlyle and the Idea of Influence written by Paul E. Kerry and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That Thomas Carlyle was influential in his own lifetime and continues to be so over 130 years after his death is a proposition with which few will disagree. His role as his generation’s foremost interpreter of German thought, his distinctive rhetorical style, his approach to history via the “innumerable biographies” of great men, and his almost unparalleled record of correspondence with contemporaries both great and small, makes him a necessary figure of study in multiple fields. Thomas Carlyle and the Idea of Influence positions Carlyle as an ideal representative figure through which to study that complex interplay between past and present most commonly referred to as influence. Approached from a theoretically ecumenical perspective by the volume's introduction and eighteen essays, influence is itself refigured through a number of complementary metaphorical frames: influence as organic inheritance; influence as aesthetic infection; influence as palimpsest; influence as mythology; influence as network; and more. Individual essays connect Carlyle with the persons and publications of Mathilde Blind, Orestes Brownson, John Bunyan, G. K. Chesterton, Benjamin Disraeli, George Eliot, T. S. Eliot, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, James Joyce, William Keenan, Windham Lewis, Jules Michelet, John Stuart Mill, Robert Owen, Spencer Stanhope, John Sterling, and others. Considered as a whole, Thomas Carlyle and the Idea of Influence assembles a web of conceptual and intertextual connections that both challenges received understandings of influence itself and establishes a standard by which to measure future assertions of Carlyle's enduring intellectual legacy in the twenty-first century and beyond.
