Book Synopsis Rescheduling Under Disruptions in Manufacturing Systems by : Dujuan Wang
Download or read book Rescheduling Under Disruptions in Manufacturing Systems written by Dujuan Wang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-11 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the models, methods, and results of some rescheduling problems in the presence of unexpected disruption events, including job unavailability, arrival of new jobs, and machine breakdown. The occurrence of these unexpected disruptions may cause a change in the planned schedule, which may render the originally feasible schedule infeasible. Rescheduling, which involves adjusting the original schedule to account for a disruption, is necessary in order to minimize the effects of the disruption on the performance of the system. This involves a trade-off between finding a cost-effective new schedule and avoiding excessive changes to the original schedule. This book views scheduling theory as practical theory, and it has made sure to emphasize the practical aspects of its topic coverage. Thus, this book considers some scenarios existing in most real-world environments, such as preventive machine maintenance, and deteriorating effect where the actual processing time of a job gets longer along with machine’s usage and age. To alleviate the effect of disruption events, some flexible strategies are adopted, including allocation extra resources to reduce job processing times or rejection the production of some jobs. For each considered scenario, depending on the model settings and on the disruption events, this book addresses the complexity, and the design of efficient exact or approximated algorithms. Especially when optimization methods and analytic tools fall short, this book stresses metaheuristics including improved elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm and differential evolution algorithm. This book also provides extensive numerical studies to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms. The problem of rescheduling in the presence of unexpected disruption events is of great importance for the successful implementation of real-world scheduling systems. There is now an astounding body of knowledge in this field. This book is the first monograph on rescheduling. It aims at introducing the author's research achievements in rescheduling. It is written for researchers and Ph.D. students working in scheduling theory and other members of scientific community who are interested in recent scheduling models. Our goal is to enable the reader to know about some new achievements on this topic.

Book Synopsis New Directions for Operations Research in Manufacturing by : Günter Fandel
Download or read book New Directions for Operations Research in Manufacturing written by Günter Fandel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basically five problems areas are addressed by operations research specialists in the manufacturing domain: theore- tical and practical aspectsin production planning, facility layout, inventory control, tool management and scheduling. Some of these problems can be solved off-line, while others must be treated as real-time problems impacted by the changing state of the system. Additionally, all of these problems have to be dealt with in an integrated systems framework. Several new topics have recently appeared in the scientific literature which now attract the interest of operations researchers. These include distributed real-time scheduling, hierarchical and heterarchical control systems, integrated algorithms for design, process planning, and equipment level programming, material handling in a finite capacity resource environment, and designing and implementing distributed data management systems. The contributions of these proceedings represent new andunique theoretical developments and applications related to these new topics. They deal with modelling production structures and applying expert systems or neural networks to production systems. Mathematical programming, control theory, simulation, genetic algorithms, tabu search, and simulated annealing are applied as solutiton techniques.

June 1992. This conference was organized with the cooperation of the FernuniversiHit Hagen and was jointly hosted by the "Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Operations Research (DGOR)" and the "Manufacturing Special Interest Group of the Operations Research Society of America (ORSA-SIGMA)". For the organization of the conference we received generous financial support from the sponsors listed at the end of this volume. We wish to express our appreciation to all supporters for their contributions. This conference was the successor of the JOInt ORSA/DGOR-conference in Gaithersburg/Maryland, USA, on the 30. and 31. July 1991. Both OR-societies committed themselves in 1989 to host joint conferences on special topics of interest from the field of operations research. This goal has been successfully realized in the area of production management; and it should be an incentive to conduct similar joint conferences on other topics of operations research in the years to come. The 36 contributions in this proceedings volume deal with general and special problems in production planning as well as approaches and algorithms for their solution. They cover a wide range of operations research within product management and will therefore address a wide circle of interested readers among OR-scientists and professionals alike.

Book Synopsis Manufacturing Scheduling Systems by : Jose M. Framinan
Download or read book Manufacturing Scheduling Systems written by Jose M. Framinan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to the problem of manufacturing scheduling, which is the efficient allocation of jobs (orders) over machines (resources) in a manufacturing facility. It offers a comprehensive and integrated perspective on the different aspects required to design and implement systems to efficiently and effectively support manufacturing scheduling decisions. Obtaining economic and reliable schedules constitutes the core of excellence in customer service and efficiency in manufacturing operations. Therefore, scheduling forms an area of vital importance for competition in manufacturing companies. However, only a fraction of scheduling research has been translated into practice, due to several reasons. First, the inherent complexity of scheduling has led to an excessively fragmented field in which different sub problems and issues are treated in an independent manner as goals themselves, therefore lacking a unifying view of the scheduling problem. Furthermore, mathematical brilliance and elegance has sometimes taken preference over practical, general purpose, hands-on approaches when dealing with these problems. Moreover, the paucity of research on implementation issues in scheduling has restricted translation of valuable research insights into industry. "Manufacturing Scheduling Systems: An Integrated View on Models, Methods and Tools" presents the different elements constituting a scheduling system, along with an analysis the manufacturing context in which the scheduling system is to be developed. Examples and case studies from real implementations of scheduling systems are presented in order to drive the presentation of the theoretical insights. The book is intended for an ample readership including industrial engineering/operations post-graduate students and researchers, business managers, and readers seeking an introduction to the field.
