Book Synopsis Pesticide Use in U.S. Agriculture by : Jorge Fernandez-Cornejo
Download or read book Pesticide Use in U.S. Agriculture written by Jorge Fernandez-Cornejo and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pesticide use has changed considerably over the past five decades. Rapid growth characterized the first 20 years, ending in 1981. The total quantity of pesticides applied to the 21 crops analyzed grew from 196 million pounds of pesticide active ingredients in 1960 to 632 million pounds in 1981. Improvements in the types and modes of action of active ingredients applied along with small annual fluctuations resulted in a slight downward trend in pesticide use to 516 million pounds in 2008. These changes were driven by economic factors that determined crop and input prices and were influenced by pest pressures, environmental and weather conditions, crop acreages, agricultural practices (including adoption of genetically engineered crops), access to land-grant extension personnel and crop consultants, the cost-effectiveness of pesticides and other practices in protecting crop yields and quality, technological innovations in pest management systems/practices, and environmental and health regulations. Emerging pest management policy issues include the development of glyphosate-resistant weed populations associated with the large increase in glyphosate use since the late 1990s, the development of Bt-resistant western corn rootworm in some areas, and the arrival of invasive or exotic pest species, such as soybean aphid and soybean rust, which can influence pesticide use patterns and the development of Integrated Pest Management programs.

Book Synopsis Potato Biology and Biotechnology by : Dick Vreugdenhil
Download or read book Potato Biology and Biotechnology written by Dick Vreugdenhil and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past 15-20 years major discoveries have been concluded on potato biology and biotechnology. Important new tools have been developed in the area of molecular genetics, and our understanding of potato physiology has been revolutionized due to amenability of the potato to genetic transformation. This technology has impacted our understanding of the molecular basis of plant-pathogen interaction and has also opened new opportunities for the use of the potato in a variety of non-food biotechnological purposes. This book covers the potato world market as it expands further into the new millennium. Authors stress the overriding need for stable yields to eliminate human hunger and poverty, while considering solutions to enhance global production and distribution. It comprehensively describes genetics and genetic resources, plant growth and development, response to the environment, tuber quality, pests and diseases, biotechnology and crop management. Potato Biology is the most valuable reference available for all professionals involved in the potato industry, plant biologists and agronomists. - Offers an understanding of the social, economic and market factors that influence production and distribution - Discusses developments and useful traits in transgenic biology and genetic engineering - The first reference entirely devoted to understanding new advances in potato biology and biotechnology
Book Synopsis Pesticide Biotransformation and Disposition by : Ernest Hodgson

Book Synopsis Significant Pharmaceuticals Reported in US Patents by : Thomas F. DeRosa
Download or read book Significant Pharmaceuticals Reported in US Patents written by Thomas F. DeRosa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-07-07 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant Pharmaceuticals Reported in US Patents identifies the next generation of pharmaceuticals reported in US Patents. This "hands-on" title provides explicit laboratory methods for preparing the most recent and effective medications. Each entry documents the biological testing protocols used to evaluate a drug and the significance of the current treatment agent over previous methods. Pharmaceuticals are included in this review only if at least two of the following criteria were met: Effectiveness in treating an illness, Innovative, ease of preparation, synergy with existing Medications. Pharmaceuticals are reported for 27 separate classes of illness, including: AIDS, Alzheimer's Disease, Cardiovascular Disorders, Diabetes, Epilepsy, Hepatitis C, Osteoporosis, Obesity and Sleep Disorders. Significant Pharmaceuticals Reported in US Patents has been designed to be used as both a reference and synthetic guide for pharmaceutical, medicinal and organic chemists and graduate students. Researchers working in other areas will also find the information valuable as in many instances intermediates or the next generation pharmaceutical are readily convertible into other industrial products including: anti-oxidants, chemical additives, herbicides, polymer precursors, water purification agents. Clear structural depictions of reagents and chemical transformations have been supplied to permit the identification of other future applications. Identifies next generation pharmaceuticals Provides practical preparation methods for each active agent and derivatives Documents the analytical characterization and biological testing results of active agents

Download or read book An Introduction to Interdisciplinary Toxicology written by Carey N. Pope and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-02-21 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Interdisciplinary Toxicology: From Molecules to Man integrates the various aspects of toxicology, from "simpleā molecular systems, to complex human communities, with expertise from a spectrum of interacting disciplines. Chapters are written by specialists within a given subject, such as a chemical engineer, nutritional scientist, or a microbiologist, so subjects are clearly explained and discussed within the toxicology context. Many chapters are comparative across species so that students in ecotoxicology learn mammalian toxicology and vice versa. Specific citations, further reading, study questions, and other learning features are also included. The book allows students to concurrently learn concepts in both biomedical and environmental toxicology fields, thus better equipping them for the many career opportunities toxicology provides. This book will also be useful to those wishing to reference how disciplines interact within the broad field of toxicology.
