Per Knox's orders and those of General Benjamin Lincoln, Secretary at War, he has visited the foundries of John Jacob Faesch at Mount Hope and Gabril [Gabriel?] Ogden at Pompton, both in New Jersey, and inspected the shot and shells they were commissioned to cast for the Army. Provides the number and weight of each type of shell or shot at each foundry, and declared they stood proof and fit for service. Has sent a certificate to this effect to the Secretary at War and to the Ordnance Office. Also, per an order from Lincoln, has collected the public stores at Mount Hope and Hibernia and have inclosed them in a picketed fence. See GLC02437.01707 for related information.

Describes recent experiments on howitzers of French and of English origin, and explains that they require different shell sizes (see GLC02437.01411), and recommends Captain [William] Stevens and Mr. [John Jacob] Faesch for the job. Recommends reproofing all the shells in Pennsylvania and Maryland because of previous accidents. Describes the recent acquisition by General Washington of cannon from the state of Virginia (see GLC02437.01394). Encloses a list of stores requested for West Point and the field, as well as one prepared by General [William] Irvine for Fort Pitt. Emphasizes the necessity of building the required number of carriages, wagons, tumbrils, and cartridges, and of obtaining the requested number of horses. Also mentions Mr. [Samuel] Hodgdon.

Has asked General George Washington his opinion on employing German prisoners as armorers at Newburgh in exchange for their freedom (see GLC02437.01589), and Washington feels this is a good idea, so Knox asks Lincoln to make the appropriate arrangements. Also comments that he has received recent Congressional resolves about restructuring the department of military stores, and he will soon forward a list of those who he feels might not be most qualified to continue in service of the department.

Advises Faesch that Captain [William] Stevens will soon be arriving with a small party to reproof shells, and will be bringing a section of a French 8 inch shell, with an order from the Secretary at War to cast three thousand of that construction. Explains, You may remember that I mentioned to you that we found some French 8 inch howitzers at York in Virginia. These we have now mounted, but we find by the fairest experiment that the shells cast for English ordnance of that name will not answer, the windage being so grate as to lose a great proportion of the effects of the powder. The French shells are three quarters of an inch larger than the English, so those which are called 8 inches will actually be 8 inches. He and Mrs. Knox send their regards to Mrs. Faesch.
