Book excerpt: Repurposing Legacy Data: Innovative Case Studies takes a look at how data scientists have re-purposed legacy data, whether their own, or legacy data that has been donated to the public domain. Most of the data stored worldwide is legacy data—data created some time in the past, for a particular purpose, and left in obsolete formats. As with keepsakes in an attic, we retain this information thinking it may have value in the future, though we have no current use for it. The case studies in this book, from such diverse fields as cosmology, quantum physics, high-energy physics, microbiology, psychiatry, medicine, and hospital administration, all serve to demonstrate how innovative people draw value from legacy data. By following the case examples, readers will learn how legacy data is restored, merged, and analyzed for purposes that were never imagined by the original data creators. - Discusses how combining existing data with other data sets of the same kind can produce an aggregate data set that serves to answer questions that could not be answered with any of the original data - Presents a method for re-analyzing original data sets using alternate or improved methods that can provide outcomes more precise and reliable than those produced in the original analysis - Explains how to integrate heterogeneous data sets for the purpose of answering questions or developing concepts that span several different scientific fields

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook brings together diverse domains and technical competences of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) into a single, comprehensive publication. It is intended for researchers, practitioners, and students/educators who require a wide-ranging and authoritative reference on MBSE with a multidisciplinary, global perspective. It is also meant for those who want to develop a sound understanding of the practice of systems engineering and MBSE, and/or who wish to teach both introductory and advanced graduate courses in systems engineering. It is specifically focused on individuals who want to understand what MBSE is, the deficiencies in current practice that MBSE overcomes, where and how it has been successfully applied, its benefits and payoffs, and how it is being deployed in different industries and across multiple applications. MBSE engineering practitioners and educators with expertise in different domains have contributed chapters that address various uses of MBSE and related technologies such as simulation and digital twin in the systems lifecycle. The introductory chapter reviews the current state of practice, discusses the genesis of MBSE and makes the business case. Subsequent chapters present the role of ontologies and meta-models in capturing system interdependencies, reasoning about system behavior with design and operational constraints; the use of formal modeling in system (model) verification and validation; ontology-enabled integration of systems and system-of-systems; digital twin-enabled model-based testing; system model design synthesis; model-based tradespace exploration; design for reuse; human-system integration; and role of simulation and Internet-of-Things (IoT) within MBSE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this valuable book, 11 chapters each overview a technology of interest to librarians working in the field today. From cloud computing to data curation to open-source software, the world of technology offers great opportunity—and potential frustration. Nancy Courtney and her team of IT experts have set out to enhance the former and alleviate the latter. More Technology for the Rest of Us: A Second Primer on Computing for the Non-IT Librarian follows up on Courtney's 2005 technology volume by tackling the most recent advances in IT. Each chapter describes a technology important to the library field, explains how it works in terms a non-IT professional can understand, and describes its uses. The essays in More Technology for the Rest of Us are not meant to make readers experts, but to provide a basic introduction to some of the current technologies impacting libraries and their patrons. Articles are brief and clearly written, and computer jargon is defined and explained. Each chapter lists references for further information, and there is a selected bibliography and glossary at the end of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together heritage studies and literary studies, this book examines heritage as a ubiquitous trope in contemporary Britain, a seemingly inescapable figure for relations to the past. Inheritance has been an important metaphor for characterizing cultural and political traditions since the 1970s, but one criticized for its conservatism and apparent disinheritance of "new" Britons. Engaging with contemporary literary and cinematic texts, the book interrogates metaphoric resonances: that bestowing past, receiving present, and transmitted bounty are all singular and unified; that transmission between past and present is smooth, despite heritage depending on death; that the past enjoins the present to conserve its legacy into the future. However, heritage offers an alternative to modern market-driven relations, transactions stressing connection only through a momentary exchange, for bequest resembles gift-giving and connects past to present. Consequently, heritage contains competing impulses, subtexts largely unexplored given the trope’s lapse into cliché. The volume charts how these resonances developed, as well as charting more contemporary aspects of heritage: as postmodern image, tourist industry, historic environment, and metaculture. These dimensions develop the trope, moving it from singular focus on continuity with the past to one more oriented around different lines of relation between past, present, and future. Heritage as a trope is explored through a wide range of texts: core accounts of political theory (Locke and Burke); seminal documents within historic conservation; phenomenology and poststructuralism; film and television (Merchant-Ivory, Downton Abbey); and a broad range of contemporary fiction from novelists including Zadie Smith, Julian Barnes, Hilary Mantel, Sarah Waters, Alan Hollinghurst, Peter Ackroyd, and Helen Oyeyemi.

Book excerpt: This book explores how postmillennial Anglophone women writers use romantic narrativisations of history to explore, revise, repurpose and challenge the past in their novels, exposing the extent to which past societies were damaging to women by instead imagining alternative histories. The novelists discussed employ the generic conventions of romance to narrate their understanding of historical and contemporary injustice and to reflect upon women’s achievements and the price they paid for autonomy and a life of public purpose. The volume seeks, firstly, to discuss the work of revision or reparation being performed by romantic historical fiction and, secondly, to analyse how the past is being repurposed for use in the present. It contends that the discourses and genre of romance work to provide a reparative reading of the past, but there are limitations and entrenched problems in such readings.

They all have been peer reviewed and written for a diverse variety of reasons. Some papers have been modified to suit a general audience, and others have simply been improved. There are some formatting differences due to the basic requirements of the various venues. The subject matter can be viewed as three separate sections: introductory, foundational, and applicative. The introductory papers are quite simple and give a gentle introduction to what the discipline of service is all about. The foundational papers provide a basis for the study of the concepts and methods of the service discipline. The applicative papers are general in nature so as to provide insight to what does and can go on in the world of service. Papers 1 and 2 fall into the first category. Papers 3, 4, and 5 are in the second category, and the remainder are in the third group. The table of contents is unique in that the entries give an abstract to the respective paper. This is an aid to a selection and gives a summary of the subject matter. The papers were assembled to support two recent books on the subject of service.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of essays on service and advanced technology written by the author and are based on peer-reviewed papers presented at technical conferences. Service and advanced technology is the cornerstone of modern business and management, and future developments in the various disciplines will be based on concepts presented herein. The essays can be easily be read by persons in all areas of business and management. Some of the papers have been modified to better suit a general audience, and others have been simply improved. Titles and formatting have been adjusted in some cases. Some of the reasons for studying service and advanced technology are that the subjects serve as the bases of our everyday existence. We use service and technology on a daily basis, yet we know very little about the underlying concepts. We have no introduction, no principles of best behavior, and no theories. It is time for a change. The reader is expected to read the essays individually and in any appropriate order. Accordingly, some of the introductory material is repeated. This fact is just part of the notion of presenting topics on a needed basis. The table of contents has been designed to better serve the reader. An entry gives an abstract to the respective essay, and serves an aid to the reader in selecting an essay of interest. The abstract entries serve to give a quick outline of the subject matter. The essays give a view of several areas of interest to the modern reader and cover the following subjects: Service concepts, Service management, Service technology, Hospitality, Cybersecurity, Service economics, Ransomware, Applied cybersecurity, Cybersecurity policy, Watchlist concepts, Identity, The ontology of identity, Service systems ontology, and Terrorism. Harry Katzan is a professor, author, and consultant, and enjoys outdoor activities.

Book excerpt: The book is part of FAST’s ongoing activism, research, design, and advocacy work. It builds on earlier presentations, including the exhibition BLUE: Architecture of UN Peacekeeping Missions for the Dutch Pavilion of the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale. At the intersection of architecture, urban planning, international relations and activism, BLUE: Architecture of UN Peacekeeping Missions seeks not only to change UN missions but also to open up and expand the operative realm of architecture. It combines research and projects involving policymakers, military engineers and officers, anthropologists, local inhabitants, activists, rebels, diplomats and ministers, architects and planners. BLUE offers examples of how entrenched institutional bureaucracies can be confronted by using more inclusive models of engagement, and it shows how designs rooted in local cultures and empowerment can address a history of violence.

As far as Artificial Intelligence is concerned, there are a lot of books on the market. It has been mentioned there are 300 AI books, and over 200 ChatGPT books. That might not be exactly correct but the point has been made. This book is easy to read. Not all AI books are easy to read. Some AI books are for experts and are exceedingly difficult along with math and other stuff. This book is definitely not for the expert, but it covers just about everything you will need to know in the future. This book contains Artificial Intelligence, Service Science, and some readings. Once you have it, you will not want to give or throw it away. It is written with the reader in mind, period. The author is not trying to show off and things are not described mathematically. Service Science is a darling subject, initiated by IBM. Everything we do is a service and that why it is paired conceptually with Artificial Intelligence. Knowledge of Service Science is necessary to become successful with Artificial Intelligence. The author would like to commend his daughter Kathryn who helped with the project and for her love and kindness.
