Book Synopsis The Price of Exclusion by : Eric Kurlander
Download or read book The Price of Exclusion written by Eric Kurlander and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The failure of Liberalism” in Germany and its responsibility for the rise of Nazism has been widely discussed among scholars inside and outside Germany. This author argues that German liberalism failed because of the irreconcilable conflict between two competing visions of German identity. In following the German liberal parties from the Empire through the Third Reich Kurlander illustrates convincingly how an exclusionary racist Weltanschauung, conditioned by profound transformations in German political culture at large, gradually displaced the liberal-universalist conception of a democratic Rechtsstaat. Although there were some notable exceptions, this widespread obsession with „racial community [Volksgemeinschaft]“ caused the liberal parties to succumb to ideological lassitude and self-contradiction, paving the way for National Socialism.

Download or read book Discourses of Decline written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-01-17 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the relevance of decline within the republican tradition. While scholarship on republicanism thrives, the idea of decline, which has been prominent in republican theory since antiquity, has received relatively little attention. The essays in this volume take a broad cultural perspective and study a wide variety of authors and (con)texts to situate decline among the key concepts in the history of republicanism. Most contributions focus on the Dutch Republic during the Age of Enlightenment and Revolutions, the area of expertise of Wyger Velema, to whom this volume is dedicated. Other case studies include early modern Spain and Venice, the German Enlightenment, and the Weimar Republic. Contributors are: Remieg Aerts, Hans Erich Bödeker, Wiep van Bunge, Lisa Kattenberg, Wessel Krul, Matthijs Lok, Alessandro Metlica, Ida Nijenhuis, Eleá de la Porte, Jan Rotmans, Niek van Sas, Freya Sierhuis, and Lina Weber.

Book Synopsis Beethoven in German Politics, 1870-1989 by : David B. Dennis

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This absorbing book chronicles the exploitation of Beethoven's life and work by German political parties from the founding of the modern nation in 1870 to the peaceful East German Revolution of 1989. David Dennis taps a wealth of new archival resources to examine for the first time how propagandists of every persuasion have transformed Beethoven and his art into powerful, and varied, national symbols. In fascinating detail, Dennis introduces many 'Beethovens, ' each fashioned as part of a process that transformed the composer into the most protean, and widely abused, cultural-political symbol in modern German history.-David Large, Montana State University This book] should fascinate not only Beethoven devotees but also anyone interested in the elusiveness and malleability of historical evidence.-James R.
