Read about researchers crawling through rotten-egg-smelling muck in search of an elusive mosquitofish, diving into the cold black water of the White River in search of mussels, flying with bush pilots in Alaska, and working with David Attenborough in Arkansas. Here are teachers and researchers, biologists all, all from one university, real people who get their feet wet and their hands dirty in the pursuit of knowledge.

Book excerpt: Pacific herring, Clupea pallasi, spawn along hundreds of kilometres of shoreline in Prince William Sound. Herring eggs incubate in intertidal and shallow subtidal areas attached to kelp and eelgrass. In April 1989, following the Exxon Valdez oil spill, there was potential in Prince William Sound for localized effects on spawning herring, their eggs, and the hatching larvae. Field and laboratory investigations in 1989 and 1990 were designed to assess potential injury to Prince William Sound herring by testing for differences between oiled regions and unoiled reference areas and by relating biological response variables to the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in eggs-on-kelp samples. Hydrocarbon analyses and laboratory incubation were conducted on eggs-on-kelp samples from Prince William Sound and Sitka Sound. The eggs and hatching larvae were examined to evaluate several response variables: egg development, hatch, larval survival, abnormal development of larvae, larval length, and larval yolk-sac volume.

Book Synopsis Temperature and Food Effects on Larval Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasi) in Prince William Sound, Alaska by : Sarah Jane Thornton
Download or read book Temperature and Food Effects on Larval Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasi) in Prince William Sound, Alaska written by Sarah Jane Thornton and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The effects of food availability and water temperature on larval Pacific herring growth rates and survival were studied using a coupled biophysical model for 1993 through 1997. The herring growth model included feeding gains, metabolic costs, mortality losses and vertical migration of the herring larvae. In years when springtime oceanographic processes resulted in a high concentration of zooplankton, food availability did not limit larval herring growth rates; water temperature determined survival. However, in other years, food availability did limit survival, either due to insufficient food concentrations or to inaccessibility of the food. Vertical migration occasionally was restricted by strong water column stratification, which prevented the larvae from reaching food concentrations sufficient for growth. Thus the amount of food, the temperature, and the vertical distribution of the food and the larvae were found to affect growth. The study of vertical properties of factors affecting larval fish must be included in larval fish research"--Leaf iii.

Book Synopsis Physical and Biological Factors Affecting Pacific Herring Egg Loss in Prince William Sound, Alaska by : Christopher N. Rooper
Download or read book Physical and Biological Factors Affecting Pacific Herring Egg Loss in Prince William Sound, Alaska written by Christopher N. Rooper and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biomass of Prince William Sound herring (Clupea pallasi) is estimated from egg deposition surveys. Because surveys occur after spawning, a correction for egg loss is required. I constructed ANOVA models based on environmental factors to estimate the egg loss correction in 1990-1991 and 1994-1995. The models explained 52% to 85% of the data variation. Depth of spawn was the primary factor determining egg loss, and air exposure could be substituted for depth. The correction factor was estimated at 33%. The total loss of eggs from spawning to hatching ranged from 67.40% to 100% averaging 76.06%, Two processes affecting egg loss, wave action and fish predation, were also examined. Typical wave energies were not found to contribute significantly to egg loss, but a threshold wave energy may exist beyond which egg loss is high. Consumption of eggs by greenling (Hexagrammidae) was estimated at 2.2% to 8.5% of the total spawn.
Book Synopsis Habitat Use of Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasii) in Prince William Sound, Alaska by : Seanbob R. Kelly
Download or read book Habitat Use of Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasii) in Prince William Sound, Alaska written by Seanbob R. Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To determine the spawning area contributions of Pacific herring (Clupea pallashii) larvae to nursery bays, otolith chemical analysis was conducted on juvenile fish collected from 1995 to 1997 in Prince William Sound, Alaska. The otolith edge, representing the chemical signature of the known capture location, and the otolith core, representing the unknown spawning ground chemistry, were compared with discriminant function analysis to infer spawning area origin. Chemical signatures of 87Sr/86Sr ,88Sr/48Ca, 24Mg/48Ca, and 138Ba/48Ca were used to identify broad spawning regions from inner and outer PWS that persisted for the three years sampling period despite significant interannual variability in otolith edge chemistry within nursery bays. Age of juvenile Pacific herring, age-0, 1, 2, did not significantly affect the otolith edge signatures; thus, this study is able to conclude from the otolith core chemistry that spawning areas do not contribute equally to nursery bays. This is the first demonstration that otolith chemical signatures can be used to identify the important spawning areas of this commercially important species in the Gulf of Alaska coastal areas"--Leaf iii.
