Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a completely revised and updated second edition of a highly praised volume that was first published in 1968. Taking into account recent conceptual and technical advances, the new edition examines and compares the reproductive mechanisms of different classes of vertebrates, from cyclostomes to humans, in a thorough and analytic manner. Ari van Tienhoven is a uniquely qualified scientist with many years of research and teaching experience. His fourteen chaptesr cover sex determination, sexual development, intersexes, puberty, anatomy of the reproductive system, the testes, the ovary, reproductive cycles, insemination and fertilization, care of the embryo and fetus, expulsion of the oocyte, embryo, or fetus, reproduction and immunology, reproductive behavior, and environment and reproduction. The author emphasizes the role of the H-Y antigen in determining the sex of animals and gives particular attention to the evolutionary aspects of intersexes in fish. He discusses the endocrinology of reproduction, and he also deals with the role of light in controlling the timing of reproductive activity. Many illustrations, tables, and references are included. An important contribution to the fields of comparative endocrinology and reproduction, this book will be a valuable text for advanced undergraduate and gradate students and an irreplaceable reference for zoologists in general and for specialists in reproductive physiology.

This book is divided into seven chapters; each chapter tackles a specific vertebrate class. This text specifically considers fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and man. Discussions in each chapter include these species’ evolutionary history, classification, external indications of sex, mating, fertilization, development, endocrinology, breeding seasons, sexual maturation, migration, response to environmental factors, and economic importance. The concluding chapter presents the comparative aspects of reproduction of these vertebrates. This text is of great value to teachers and students who are interested in the vertebrate reproductive system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hormones and Reproduction of Vertebrates, Volume 5: Mammals is the fifth of five second-edition volumes representing a comprehensive and integrated overview of hormones and reproduction in fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The book includes coverage of endocrinology, neuroendocrinology, physiology, behavior, and anatomy of reptilian reproduction. It provides a broad treatment of the roles of pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, and gonadal hormones in all aspects of reproduction, as well as descriptions of major life history events. New to this edition is a concluding assessment of the effect of environmental influences on mammals. Initial chapters in this book broadly examine sex determination, reproductive neuroendocrinology, stress, and hormonal regulation as it relates to male and female reproductive structure and function. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproductive Biology of Teleost Fishes is the first integrated review of the reproductive biology of the bony fishes, which are the most species-rich and diversified group of vertebrates. Teleosts display remarkable variation in their modes of reproduction, and this volume is intended to provide a framework for understanding the remarkable reproductive diversity of this group. It describes their reproductive biology using, wherever possible, phylogenetic analyses and life-history theory as a means to interpret the information. The book addresses the genetic, physiological, behavioural, ecological, evolutionary and applied aspects of teleost reproduction in a comparative framework that emphasises the adaptive basis of reproductive diversity. Reproductive Biology of Teleost Fishes provides a comprehensive synthesis of fish reproduction that will be of great interest to life scientists, particularly ecologists, evolutionary biologists, physiologists and advanced undergraduates, postgraduates and research workers requiring a comprehensive overview of fish reproduction. The book is suitable for courses in fish biology and ecology, reproductive physiology and reproductive genetics. It also addresses applied questions and will be of value for courses on fisheries science and aquaculture. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where biological sciences, fisheries science and aquaculture are studied and taught should have several copies of this important book on their shelves.

Book excerpt: When considering the physiological systems of the body, the degree of species variation within the reproductive system compared to other systems is remarkable. Furthermore, it is essential that researchers, educators, and students alike remain aware of the fundamental comparative differences in the reproductive biology of domestic species. Written by renowned scientists in their respective fields, Comparative Reproductive Biology is a comprehensive reference on the reproductive systems of domestic species. The book offers both broad and specific knowledge in areas that have advanced the field in recent years, including advances in cell and molecular biology applied to reproduction, transgenic animal production, gender selection, artificial insemination, embryo transfer, cryobiology, animal cloning and many others. This seminal text includes topics in animal reproduction that are usually only found as part of other books in animal science such as anatomy, histology, physiology, radiology, ultrasonogrophy, and others. Comprehensive reference of the reproductive systems of domestic species Written by a team of top researchers Richly illustrated throughout, including 12 pages of color images

Book excerpt: Vertebrate Endocrinology represents more than just a treatment of the endocrine system-it integrates hormones with other chemical bioregulatory agents not classically included with the endocrine system. It provides a complete overview of the endocrine system of vertebrates by first emphasizing the mammalian system as the basis of most terminology and understanding of endocrine mechanisms and then applies that to non-mammals. The serious reader will gain both an understanding of the intricate relationships among all of the body systems and their regulation by hormones and other bioregulators, but also a sense of their development through evolutionary time as well as the roles of hormones at different stages of an animal's life cycle. Includes new full color format includes over 450 full color, completely redrawn image Features a companion web site hosting all images from the book as PPT slides and .jpeg files Presents completedly updated and revitalized content with new chapters, such as Endocrine Disrupters and Behavioral Endocrinology Offers new clinical correlation vignettes throughout

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oral birth in the Australian gastric brooding frog Rheobatrachus sUus 2 Preface I have deliberately chosen the title picture to the preface, which shows the oral birth of a young gastric brooding frog (Rheobatrachus situs), to draw the reader's attention to the preface since I wish to explain why the book was written and illustrated in the way it now appears. The book has grown out of the material of a lecture course taking 3 to 4 hours per week each semester that I have given for several years at the Ruhr-University Bochum as the theoretical basis for an intensive 4 week practical course on vertebrate reproduction for students of biology. For various reasons I am a hardened opponent of giving lecture notes to the students. On the other hand I found that my students made great efforts to work through and supplement their own lecture notes by studying the literature. However, there are no suitable textbooks on vertebrate reproduction written in German and the standard work in this field is now several decades old and deals mainly with mammals. The students were therefore often frustrated in their efforts given the limited time they had available. I have therefore decided to present here the most important structural and functional aspects of vertebrate reproduction and include other material to extend the framework of my original lectures.
