Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access volume critically reviews a diverse body of scholarship and practice that informs the conceptualization, curriculum, teaching and measurement of life skills in education settings around the world. It discusses life skills as they are implemented in schools and non-formal education, providing both qualitative and quantitative evidence of when, with whom, and how life skills do or do not impact young women’s and men’s lives in various contexts. Specifically, it examines the nature and importance of life skills, and how they are taught. It looks at the synergies and differences between life skills educational programmes and the way in which they promote social and emotional learning, vocational/employment education, and health and sexuality education. Finally, it explores how life skills may be better incorporated into education and how such education can address structures and relations of power to help youth achieve desired future outcomes, and goals set out in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Life skills education has gained considerable attention by education policymakers, researchers and educators as being the sine qua non for later achievements in life. It is nearly ubiquitous in global and national education policies, including the SDGs, because life skills are regarded as essential for a diverse set of purposes: reducing poverty, achieving gender equality, promoting economic growth, addressing climate change, fostering peace and global citizenship, and creating sustainable and healthy communities. Yet, to achieve these broad goals, questions persist as to which life skills are important, who needs to learn them, how they can be taught, and how they are best measured. This book addresses these questions.

The lives of adolescents are subject to global challenges faced by information and technological revolution, changing markets and globalization, and specific changes taking place in family dynamics, cultural traditions, religious beliefs and other socialization practices. This book on Adolescence Education assumes importance in view of the likely impact of acquired skills and behaviours during this period on an individual’s prospects in adulthood. This book is an attempt to understand the broader context in which adolescent lives are embedded. The theoretical perspective presents a multi-disciplinary view of adolescence that helps to understand the evolution of the concept of adolescence. Presenting an elaborate account of adolescence as experienced by young in India and highlighting the challenges that emerge as a result of dynamic changes in society, the attempt is made to identify the emerging issues and concerns that impact the lives of adolescents and provide a perspective to adolescence education. The text presents the key features of the present AEP that are imperative for its successful implementation. The UN and civil society initiatives are mapped with a view to locate the characteristic features and thrust of various interventions. Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

Book excerpt: The basic approach of this book has been shaped by our own research, professional and personal experience as teachers and researchers. We aimed for a text that includes complexities of adolescent age intervention which will be relevant and useful in bridging a gap between theory and research on adolescent's lives. Proper knowledge imparted during adolescent age has positive impact on the adolescent's development than at any other time in life. It is imperative to maximize both the amount and quality of knowledge that adolescents receive which will ensure a strong foundation for future learning. The text approaches adolescents as a comprehensive, integrated experience, one that takes place through their perception rather than through a formal adult directed approach. The need for parents, caretakers, teachers, who can integrate nature and education, using adolescent's knowledge and perception as the integrators is also highlighted. The text focuses on the awareness needs of adolescents for their reproductive health. Expanded and updated discussions on the sexual issues, rights, current research studies on the impact of intervention on the knowledge and perception have been dealt. The intervention package is prepared which is suitable to the immediate environment, culture, education and age of adolescent girls. It can be useful for training of health workers, teachers and participation of parents. In addition, the content of book highlights the interacting contribution of biology to the development of adolescent girls, explains how the intervention process helps adolescents to utilize reproductive rights for their well being.

Book excerpt: There are an estimated 1.2 billion young people aged 10-19 years worldwide, the largest generation of adolescents in history with more than 80 per cent living in developing countries, particularly in urban areas. The 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child established the rights of young people to services such as education, health, recreation and justice, yet there is a collective failure of countries to fulfill and protect these rights. This publication looks at a wide range of developmental, health, educational and political issues that need to be addressed in order to nurture the potential of young people to participate fully in their societies throughout the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescents experience many challenges in their sexual and reproductive lives, therefore, appropriate and timely specialist advice and care can do much to alleviate problems and misconceptions, and enable young people to move forward with their lives in confidence. Not many doctors are familiar with the delicacy and sensitivity an adolescent girl needs to be treated with as she needs special attention and a quiet, friendly environment. The Adolescent Health Committee of FOGSI aims to achieve this task by establishing Adolescent Friendly Health Centers. Our mission is to sensitize the youth of our country, through various projects we will be dealing in different aspects of health, i.e. physical, mental, social, spiritual, reproductive and sexual health and well-being, throughout their lives. We aim to “help young people form a strong moral identity in their early adolescent years and empower them to contribute to the well-being of their communities...” Disseminating knowledge and helping our adolescents to be empowered has been the goal of the Adolescent Health Committee, FOGSI and one such endeavor would hopefully reach to our colleagues through this book. We have selected different topics related to ASRH for the interest of our readers who will invariably face the dilemma of counseling the young adolescents and relieving them of the stress related with their normal pubertal changes. The preventive health section covers the social aspect of health as not many doctors will be well-versed in treating difficult adolescents, peer pressure and introducing life skills to them. Teenage pregnancy has its own complications and knowledge about contraception is lacking amongst the adolescents which is a major cause of concern globally with complications of unsafe abortion. Premarital counseling, vaccines and knowledge about STDs are important aspects of reproductive sexual health. Menarche at early age and ovarian tumors are cause of concern not only to the adolescents but to their mothers as well, hence a special section will deal with this area. To update our knowledge and learn about laparoscopic and robotic surgery will be a delight for our readers as these are upcoming recent trends in adolescent gynecology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opportunity to pen this introduction to my debut book, "GENDER, SCHOOL AND SOCIETY," is one that fills me with excitement. Consideration of gender in social issues is the topic of this book. Being a boy or a girl has varied implications and experiences in different cultures, eras, and communities. Due to centuries of discrimination, she learned to view herself as a lesser human being and an insignificant tool in the hands of her male counterpart. Her sense of self and confidence were slowly eroded as a result. The more she tried to hide her inner emotions, the more entangled her authentic self became in her predetermined social roles. For almost twenty years, organisations worldwide and governmental strategy statements have prioritised the reduction of gender disparity. In addition to guaranteeing women's right to vote and other civil liberties, the Constitution of India also allows for positive discrimination on the part of the state in favour of women. Our democratic government has enacted laws, development policies, plans, and programmes to help women succeed in a variety of fields. To further ensure women's rights, India has signed on to and ratified a number of international agreements and human rights instruments.
