Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Men of Letters: William Hickling Prescott Throughout the first few decades of the nineteenth century, the United States, though forming a political entity, were in everything but name divided into three separate nations, each one of which was quite unlike the other two. This difference sprang partly from the character of the population in each, partly from divergent tendencies in American colonial develop ment, and partly from conditions which were the result of both these causes. The culture history, therefore, of each of the three sections exhibits, naturally enough, a distinct and definite phase of intellectual activity, which is reflected very clearly in the records of American literature. In no autobiography do the recollections of mere infancy and childhood occupy so much space, or count for so much, as in his. Accordingly, while the general impres sion he conveys of himself from his second or third year onwards is that of a very diminutive, shy, sensitive, and dreamy child, moving about, when out-of-doors, always on green turf or in garden-walks, and within-doors always among young brothers and sisters, in a house of wealthy and even luxurious elegance, the actual incidents of his infancy and childhood, which he has embalmed for us so carefully in such marvellous prose, have to be distributed between the two habitations above named, once visible on the rusfie margin of Manchester, but now engulfed in its brick and uproar. It was at The Farm that he hada. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Traits and Representative Men His own letters to Carlyle of the year 1845 give us a clue to the Representative Men lectures. He speaks of their being got ready for delivery at the Lyceum, Boston. This opened the way for the English lectures, and a course on this subject followed at the Manchester Athenaeum in the late autumn of 1847. Speaking of the earlier Boston lectures, his son writes The Lyceum was Emer son's Open pulpit. His main occupation through life was reading lectures to who would hear, at first in courses in Boston, but later all Over the country. The Lyceum became a recognised institution in the towns of New Eng land during these years, and Emerson was its accepted chief speaker and homilist. Book excerpt: Hawthorne (English Men of Letters Series) by Henry James It will be necessary, for several reasons, to give this short sketch the form rather of a critical essay than of a biography. The data for a life of Nathaniel Hawthorne are the reverse of copious, and even if they were abundant they would serve but in a limited measure the purpose of the biographer. Hawthorne's career was probably as tranquil and uneventful a one as ever fell to the lot of a man of letters; it was almost strikingly deficient in incident, in what may be called the dramatic quality. Few men of equal genius and of equal eminence can have led on the whole a simpler life. His six volumes of Note-Books illustrate this simplicity; they are a sort of monument to an unagitated fortune. Hawthorne's career had few vicissitudes or variations; it was passed for the most part in a small and homogeneous society, in a provincial, rural community; it had few perceptible points of contact with what is called the world, with public events, with the manners of his time, even with the life of his neighbours. Its literary incidents are not numerous. He produced, in quantity, but little. His works consist of four novels and the fragment of another, five volumes of short tales, a collection of sketches, and a couple of story-books for children. And yet some account of the man and the writer is well worth giving. Whatever may have been Hawthorne's private lot, he has the importance of being the most beautiful and most eminent representative of a literature. The importance of the literature may be questioned, but at any rate, in the field of letters, Hawthorne is the most valuable example of the American genius. That genius has not, as a whole, been literary; but Hawthorne was on his limited scale a master of expression. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men of Letters A year ago it would have been a pleasure to write something in appreciation of Dixon Scott's work. The more you admire a man's writing the gladder are you that he should receive - for all good writers seem to be modest, and pleased with praise - whatever poor tribute you can offer him. But to review the book of a man at the outset of his career is a very different task from writing an introduction to that book when he is dead. Dixon Scott was born in July, 1881, and died in October of last year. And my sense of our loss is proportionate to my admiration for his work. I feel it to be an immense loss. Many others there are who mourn him as a friend also - as a man of fine and very lovable character, they say. Such a man is indeed easily discernible through out these pages. But it is likely that the reader will wish to know more of him by direct evidence; and I Wish that the sad privilege of writing here about his work had fallen to someone who knew him and could describe him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Men of Letters, Vol. 12: Pope, Johnson, Gray His grandson, the present Sir Charles W. Dilke, in 1875. Meanwhile Mr. Croker had been making an ex tensive collection of materials for an exhaustive edition of Pope'sworkainwhichhe wasto beamisted by Mr. Peter Cunningham. After Oroker'e death these materials were submitted by Mr. Murray to Mr. Whitwell Elwin, whose own researches have grmtly extended our knowledge, and who had also the advantage of Mr. Dilke's advice. Mr. Elwin began, in 1871, the publication of the long-promised edition. It was to have occupied ten volumes - five of poems and five of correspondence, the latter of which was to include a very large proportion of previously nu published matter. Unfortunately for all students of Eng lish fitsraturaonly two volumes of poetryand three of correspondence have appeared The notes and prefaces, however, contain a vast amount of information, which slurs up many previously disputed points in the poets career; and it is to be hoped that the materials collected for the remaining volumes will not be ultimately lost. It is easy to dispute some of Mr. Elwin's critical opinions, but it would be impossible to speak too highly of the value of his investigations of facts. Without a study of his work, no adequate knowledge of pope is attainable. Biographer of Pope, if he ever appears, must be endowed with the qualities of an acute critic and a patient antiquarian; and it would take years of labour to work mt all the minute problems connected with the subject. All that I can profess to have done is to have given a short summary of the obvious facts, and of the main conclusions established by the evidence given at length in thewritingsof Mr. Dilke and Mr. Elwin. I have added such criticisms as seemed desirable in a work of this kind, and I must beg pardon by anticipation if I have fallen hiio inaccuracies in relating a story so full of.
