Book excerpt: Three organizations devoted to micropalaeontology held a joint meeting in London in September 2002 to encourage the trans-Atlantic sharing of ideas and to develop an integrated multi-disciplinary approach to both the academic and industrial realms. The 13 papers here, a small selection of those presented, discuss such topics as morphostratigraphy a

Book excerpt: This edited volume contains the best papers accepted for presentation during the 1st Springer Conference of the Arabian Journal of Geosciences (CAJG-1), Tunisia 2018. The volume shares the latest results from paleontological, biostratigraphic and sedimentological studies by experienced researchers mainly from research institutes in the Mediterranean and Middle East. Main topics include: paleontology, biostratigraphy, sedimentology, paleoclimatology and geomorphology. Some new insights are given on paleobiodiversity and major biological tools for biostratigraphy, patterns, mechanisms and processes of meso-cenozoic sedimentation in the Mediterranean and Middle East. In particular, case studies are included to highlight the major controlling factors of Tethyan biosphere-geosphere interactions as inferred from the Mediterranean and Middle East regions. The book is of interest to all researchers in the fields of different disciplines involved in the sedimentary geology.

Book excerpt: ''A voluminous encyclopedia of Tethyan geology and, as such, it provides an invaluable source of information for those interested in this region, and Earth history in general...The book is a must for the libraries of universities and geologic institutions.'' --- Palaios, October 1997 Volume 8 focuses on the Tethys oceanic realm and introduces new concepts such as 'transit plates' and 'seuils lithospheriques.' Contributors include new guides to understanding the distribution of Tethyan mineral and organic resources, and present insights into the role of carbonate platforms. Chapters are abundant with maps and illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to present a comprehensive view on the aquatic biogeog raphy of a small but very dynamic and complex area of the globe. Luckily, this area, called here the Levant, has attracted much interest in the past and is being increasingly studied in the present. The interphasing between the knowledge of the historical and formative processes and that of the recent distributional aspects is fairly good. The recent years saw also a widening effort which expressed itself in several symposia and monographic books. Therefore I considered it possible to treat the whole subject of the aquatic biogeography of the Levant singlehandedly rather than in the presently widespread manner of an edited book. I am keenly conscious of the shortcommings of my approach of presenting much second-hand information. Possibly this is being compensated by the fact that this book has a more coherent structure and eventually a clearer scientific message. The effort spent in synthesizing the data from the widely different sources hopefully pays off in a presentation which is more easily comprehended by the average reader. For the suspicious reader, I would recommend to read first the closing chapter of this book in which the quintescence of this book and its message is presented in a summariz ing manner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compressional Tectonics A synthesis of current knowledge on collisional and convergent plate boundaries worldwide Major mountain belts on Earth, such as the Alps, Himalayas, and Appalachians, have been built by compressional tectonic processes during continent-continent and arc-continent collisions. Understanding their formation and evolution is important because of the hazards associated with convergent and collisional plate boundaries, and because these mountain belts contain resources such as precious metals, rare earth elements, oil, gas, and coal. Compressional Tectonics: Plate Convergence to Mountain Building reviews our present-day knowledge of the tectonic evolution of the Alpine-Himalayan and Appalachian belts. Volume highlights include: Overview of terminology relating to compressional and contractional tectonics Discussion of subduction zone dynamics Debates over the timing of the collision and convergence of particular subduction and suture zones Examples of the different stages in the development of orogenic belts This book is one of a set of three in the collection Tectonic Processes: A Global View. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals.
