Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ohio’s Rufus P. Ranney embodied many of the most intriguing social and political tensions of his time. He was an anticorporate campaigner who became John D. Rockefeller’s favorite lawyer. A student and law partner of abolitionist Benjamin F. Wade, Ranney acquired an antislavery reputation and recruited troops for the Union army; but as a Democratic candidate for governor he denied the power of Congress to restrict slavery in the territories, and during the Civil War and Reconstruction he condemned Republican policies. Ranney was a key delegate at Ohio’s second constitutional convention and a two-time justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. He advocated equality and limited government as understood by radical Jacksonian Democrats. Scholarly discussions of Jacksonian jurisprudence have primarily focused on a handful of United States Supreme Court cases, but Ranney’s opinions, taken as a whole, outline a broader approach to judicial decision making. A founder of the Ohio State Bar Association, Ranney was immensely influential but has been understudied until now. He left no private papers, even destroying his own correspondence. In The Jacksonian Conservatism of Rufus P. Ranney, David M. Gold works with the public record to reveal the contours of Ranney’s life and work. The result is a new look at how Jacksonian principles crossed the divide of the Civil War and became part of the fabric of American law and at how radical antebellum Democrats transformed themselves into Gilded Age conservatives.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports of Cases Argued and Determined, Vol. 1: In the Supreme Court of Ohio But few, comparatively speaking, of the circuit decisions of the Supreme Court have been reported. Several are contained in the first volume of Ohio Reports, having been published therein, by order of the judges, under the law above mentioned, and some cases may be found in the Western Law Journal. The only volume of circuit decisions is Wright's Reports of cases decided in the years 1831 to 1834, inclusive, While he was on the bench. The only vol ume of common pleas decisions is Tappan's Reports, published in 1831. The cases contained in it were decided in 1816, 1817, 1818, and 1819. Three courts were created by the general assembly under the constitution Of 1802, namely, the Superior and Commercial Courts of Cincinnati and the Superior Court Of Cleveland. They ceased to exist on the second Monday of February, 1853, when their nu finished business was transferred to the Courts of Common Pleas. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The colorful history of paper money before the Civil War Before Civil War greenbacks and a national bank network established a uniform federal currency in the United States, the proliferation of loosely regulated banks saturated the early American republic with upwards of 10,000 unique and legal bank notes. This number does not even include the plethora of counterfeit bills and the countless shinplasters of questionable legality issued by unregulated merchants, firms, and municipalities. Adding to the chaos was the idiosyncratic method for negotiating their value, an often manipulative face-to-face discussion consciously separated from any haggling over the price of the work, goods, or services for sale. In Bank Notes and Shinplasters, Joshua R. Greenberg shows how ordinary Americans accumulated and wielded the financial knowledge required to navigate interpersonal bank note transactions. Locating evidence of Americans grappling with their money in fiction, correspondence, newspapers, printed ephemera, government documents, legal cases, and even on the money itself, Greenberg argues Americans, by necessity, developed the ability to analyze the value of paper financial instruments, assess the strength of banking institutions, and even track legislative changes that might alter the rules of currency circulation. In his examination of the doodles, calculations, political screeds, and commercial stamps that ended up on bank bills, he connects the material culture of cash to financial, political, and intellectual history. The book demonstrates that the shift from state-regulated banks and private shinplaster producers to federally authorized paper money in the Civil War era led to the erasure of the skill, knowledge, and lived experience with banking that informed debates over economic policy. The end result, Greenberg writes, has been a diminished public understanding of how currency and the financial sector operate in our contemporary era, from the 2008 recession to the rise of Bitcoin.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cases Decided in the Supreme Court of Ohio in Bank at December Terms, 1833, 1834, Vol. 6: Reported in Conformity With the Act of Assembly The law of this state is framed to cover every case where a party is evicted from the possession of lands, which he had im proved in the faith that he was the owner. In this state lasting and valuable improvements have frequently been made by persons in possession where the title was in another, and where the per son making the improvements believed the land to be his own. Where this is the case, the party who receives the benefit and ad vantage of these improvements, upon every principle of equity, ought to compensate him who made them for his labor. The object of the statute is equitable, and may justly claim a liberal construction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
