Book excerpt: Schedule 3 of the Ontario Workers' Compensation Act sets out work processes and associated diseases that are deemed to have been due to employment. Compensation claims for scheduled diseases are presumed to be compensable, and adjudication of claims by schedule proceeds on the basis that a probable connection between disease and work is demonstrable. This report describes work conducted on revision of Schedule 3 with regard to silicosis and silico-tuberculosis, tuberculosis, eye injury from non-ionizing radiation, and leukaemia resulting from benzene exposure. Those diseases were chosen for revision because of the enormous existing medical and scientific literature on disease causes and effects, an already established connection with work, and Workers' Compensation Board consistency in listing or adjudication of these diseases. Information is included on the disease processes, sources of occupational exposure, worker compensation practices in other jurisdictions, and the evidence for work-relatedness. Recommendations are made regarding inclusion of the diseases in Schedule 3.

Book excerpt: A highly original collection of essays that explore the relationship between food and architecture—the preparation of meals and the production of space. The contributors to this highly original collection of essays explore the relationship between food and architecture, asking what can be learned by examining the (often metaphorical) intersection of the preparation of meals and the production of space. In a culture that includes the Food Channel and the knife-juggling chefs of Benihana, food has become not only an obsession but an alternative art form. The nineteen essays and "Gallery of Recipes" in Eating Architecture seize this moment to investigate how art and architecture engage issues of identity, ideology, conviviality, memory, and loss that cookery evokes. This is a book for all those who opt for the "combination platter" of cultural inquiry as well as for the readers of M. F. K. Fisher and Ruth Reichl. The essays are organized into four sections that lead the reader from the landscape to the kitchen, the table, and finally the mouth. The essays in "Place Settings" examine the relationships between food and location that arise in culinary colonialism and the global economy of tourism. "Philosophy in the Kitchen" traces the routines that create a site for aesthetic experimentation, including an examination of gingerbread houses as art, food, and architectural space. The essays in "Table Rules" consider the spatial and performative aspects of eating and the ways in which shared meals are among the most perishable and preserved cultural artifacts. Finally, "Embodied Taste" considers the sensual apprehension of food and what it means to consume a work of art. The "Gallery of Recipes" contains images by contemporary architects on the subject of eating architecture.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charles Pettigrew, First Bishop-Elect of the North Carolina Episcopal Church As soon as he received the news of his appointment, Pettigrew resigned his position in Bute County and moved to Edenton. He became a member of the Church of England about this time and obtained a position as lay reader of St. Paul's Church in Edenton. Since several members of the vestry of St. Paul's Parish were trustees of the academy, it is reasonable to assume that he had contacted these men and made known to them his desire to become a minister of the Church of England. Whether or not that View is correct, it is known that while occupying the positions of schoolmaster and lay reader he engaged in the studies expected of candidates for ordination in that church. In the spring of 1775 he sailed for London where he was duly ordained deacon and priest by the bishops of London and Rochester. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine that you are living in a country that does not recognize you as a citizen in spite of the fact that your people have maintained a continuous existence there for several centuries. If that was not enough of a traumatic experience, consider that because of your racial, ethnic and religious identity other ethnic groups that are fighting the brutal military regime in your country for their self-determination and human rights consider you as "settlers" from a neighboring country. It must be your worst nightmare when you realize that half of your people (almost 2 million) have been forced to take asylum or refuge outside, and you may be the next in line to seek a way out of this living hell of xenophobia, discrimination, intolerance, racism and bigotry. The victims are the Rohingya people of Burma (Myanmar). Because of their religion, race, ethnicity, color and language they are the most discriminated and persecuted people in our planet. Some argue that they are also one of the most forgotten. The Myanmar military regime has denied their citizenship rights, claiming that they are illegal settlers from nearby Bangladesh who have moved into Arakan during the British occupation of Burma in the 19th century. Is there any truth to such allegations? Does the military junta apply the same litmus test against all ethnic and religious groups in matters of citizenship? What is the basis for a nation's claim to self-determination? Must a people wander in the wilderness for two millennia and suffer repeated persecution, humiliation and genocide to qualify? How about the rights of a minority community to survive with their culture and traditions intact? Do they need to be 'children' of a 'higher' God to qualify? What makes the children of a 'lesser' God to be forgotten and denied the same treatment and privilege that was granted hitherto to other nations? For much of its history, Burma has been ruled by military. As has once again been demonstrated recently they are brutal, savage and tyrannical. They have ignored people's verdict in the election and imprisoned leaders and workers of the democracy movement. They cannot be guarantors or protectors of human rights of anyone, let alone religious and ethnic minorities. Do you know that the Rohingyas - face cruel restriction on marriage and those married without government authorization are paraded naked on the streets?- Are restricted from traveling outside their villages?- Have no legal right to own land or property?- Are restricted from getting education, finding work, getting medical and health care? - Are subjected to land confiscation, forced eviction and destruction of homes, offices, schools, mosques, shops, etc., and face religious persecution on a daily basis? - Are victims of staged riots, forced starvation, arbitrary taxation, extortion, arrest, torture and extra-judicial killings?- Are forced to do slave labor for establishment of government infrastructure, new Buddhist settlements, pagodas and monasteries on evicted lands with the government intent of changing the landscape and demography of Arakan?- Are forced to convert to Buddhism &/or worship Buddha? Do you know that when it comes to the Rohingya people, the Burmese government doesn't uphold any of the Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?Nothing can excuse us from the criminal silence that we practice in not voicing our concern about the plight of the Rohingya people. "The Forgotten Rohingya" makes a strong case for mobilizing concerned citizens of our globe to ease their sufferings. The author analyzes origin of the Rohingya people and offers ideas to solve their problem. The author also discusses problems of xenophobia and racism, which are so rampant in this country of many races, ethnicities and religions. He also analyzes the role of Daw Suu Kyi and failure of Burma's orange revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides a comprehensive and thorough overview of technology for pollution control processes. It will be of interest to those engineers, consultants, educators, architects, planners, government officials, industry executives, attorneys, students, and others concerned with solving environmental problems. The pollution control processes are organized into chapters by broad problem areas, and appropriate technology for decontamination, destruction, isolation, etc., for each problem area is presented. Since many of these technologies are useful for more than one problem area, a specific technology may be included in more than one chapter, modified to suit the specific considerations involved. The pollution control processes described are those that are actively used today, as well as those innovative and emerging processes that have good future potential. An important feature of the book is that advantages and disadvantages of many processes are cited. Also, in many cases, regulatory-driven trends are discussed which will impact the technology used in the future.
