Book Synopsis Statistics on the Burmese Economy by : Teruko Saito
Download or read book Statistics on the Burmese Economy written by Teruko Saito and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1999 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many students of the Burmese economy have encountered difficulties in finding the necessary materials as statistical data on the economic history of Burma are limited and scarce. The main aim of this volume is to provide easier access for scholars who wish to monitor the economic development of Burma over the last two centuries. Much of the data are taken from J. S. Furnivall's laborious work, A Study of the Social and Economic History of Burma, which has never been published in an accessible form. To visualize the changes over a century, most of the tables have been converted into graphs. This volume will be useful for those in and out of the country who want to understand the economic progress of Burma.

Book Synopsis Burma's Road Toward Development by : David I. Steinberg
Download or read book Burma's Road Toward Development written by David I. Steinberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A liberalization of economic policies has inspired considerable economic growth and encouraged the development of Burma's natural resources, but, according to David Steinberg, the current military government is akin to previous civilian governments in its commitment to socialism as a vehicle for development. The economic flexibility demonstrated by the government has not been matched by political liberalization, and as a result, economic growth remains a captive of administrative and policy constraints. Steinberg traces the origins and acceptance of socialist thought and planning in Burma and shows how socialist ideology has had to be tempered with pragmatism in order to make economic development possible. Looking to Burma's future, he also points out two central problems facing the country: strained minority relations, which have kept the nation from developing a sense of unity, and difficulties with political succession brought on by the military regime's preoccupation with perpetuating its own leadership.

This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Book Synopsis Women in Modern Burma by : Tharaphi Than
Download or read book Women in Modern Burma written by Tharaphi Than and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the popular notion that Burmese women are powerful and are granted equal rights as men by society. Throughout history Burmese women have been represented as powerful and as having equal status to men by western travellers and scholars alike. National history about women also follows this conjecture. This book explains why actually very few powerful Burmese women exist, and how these few women help construct the notion of the high status of Burmese women, thereby inevitably silencing the majority of ‘unequal’ and disempowered women. One of the underlying questions throughout this book is why a few powerful women feel compelled to defend the notion that women hold privileged positions in Burmese society. Combining historical archives with statistical data published by UN agencies, this book highlights the reality of women’s status in modern Burma. Case studies include why the first Burmese women’s army was disbanded a few months after its establishment; how women writers assessed the conditions of Burmese women and represented their contemporaries in their works; the current state of prostitution; how modern-day sex-workers are trying to find their voice; and how women fared vis-à-vis men in education.
Book Synopsis Three Deltas by : Willem Van Schendel
Download or read book Three Deltas written by Willem Van Schendel and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 1991-06-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally viewed as the result of scarcity, van Schendel asserts that poverty is the outcome of unequal relationships between groups of people. Rather than believing poverty is a temporary state that will gradually disappear if the economy grows and resources become more plentiful, Three Deltas explores poverty as an indispensable structural feature of the societies in which it occurs. Accordingly, a solution to mass poverty must start from a proper understanding of specific local relations and how they are connected with rural class conflict, proletarianization, agrarian capitalism, state formation, and patterns of peripheralization. As a comparative study, built on a firm foundation of thorough research and investigation, Three Deltas challenges scholars and students interested in development studies, policy studies, sociology, anthropology, and political economy. "I found Three Deltas to be well written and informative. It contains an excellent discussion of the rise of capitalism and the relationships between endogenous and exogenous factors in the development of mass poverty. The book is strongly recommended for anyone interested in poverty and historical transformation of rural societies in the third world." --The Geographical Review "A thoughtful analysis. . .Three Deltas is a finely crafted study of the roots of poverty in South Asia. It provides an expanded view not only of the ramifications of colonial extraction but of the continuity of oppression in independent South Asia. While the picture it paints is bleak, it is nonetheless one that deserves more studies such as this." --The Journal of Asian Studies "There is no doubt that the author achieves his objective in tracing the transformations in processes of surplus accumulation and extraction in the three regions of his study. van Schendel has produced an impressive scholarly work which will be of considerable interest to both area specialist and political economists." --Journal of Contemporary Asia "An exceedingly competent, well-written, and informative work. . .strongly recommended." --Journal of Interdisciplinary History "(A) remarkable book. . . . The merit of the book lies in the skillful treatment of agrarian scenes in three corners of southern Asia without the loss of local perspectives. . . .a commendable work." --American Anthropologist "Comparative studies dealing with time and/or space remain much too rare in the field of development. That is why (this book). . .is particularly welcome. Such a stimulating book deserves a place of choice among recent works on Asia." --Journal of Developing Areas
