Download or read book Evaluation of Studded Tires written by and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current state of knowledge with both studded tire performance and methods of assessing pavement wear is reported. An annotated bibliography is presented of all known research on this subject from the U.S. and European sources, a review and evaluation of the data and results of completed studies and recommendations for future research. The objectives of the study were confined to the following tests: (1) correlation of data on the frictional characteristics of studded tires on ice, packed snow, and on bare pavements, and (2) development of a method, or methods, of quantitative assessment of the difference in wearing and abrasive effects of studded versus unstudded tires on different types of surfaces. A stud-resistance coefficient for operation on ice was derived and all U.S. data are correlated with this parameter and ice temperature.

Book excerpt: The review summarizes the results of two surveys of the physical condition and use of passenger car tires in the continental U.S.A.Based on the compiled evidence, some conclusions are drawn concerning the physical condition, use, and abuse of passenger car tires in service during these years, particularly with regard to tread depth, inflation pressures, and degree of overloading. The various estimates of tire disablement rates are compared, and contributions of tires to motor vehicle accidents explored. The report includes several recommendations directed toward upgrading the level of quality of passenger car tires in service, and reducing their abuse, with the hope and expectation that service performance will be improved, and contributions of tires to highway accidents reduced.(Author).
Book Synopsis Partial-lane Pavement Widening by : National Research Council (U.S.). Transportation Research Board
Download or read book Partial-lane Pavement Widening written by National Research Council (U.S.). Transportation Research Board and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information from many highway departments and agencies was assembled and analysed in this effort to record and evaluate current practices in the use of partial-lane pavement widening. Specific problems on partial-lane pavement widening projects (narrow work areas, acquisition of additional right-of-way, variable subgrade, reconditioning of existing pavement, reflective cracking, structure widening, surface and subsurface drainage, traffic during construction, access for abuting owners, and funding projects) have been addressed and practices have been developmed to meet specific needs. Nearly all partial-lane widening projects include provisions for placing an overlay over both the old and new pavement. In a few cases the overlay may be placed during the following construction season. The modification of the existing surface drainage, alignment improvement (by shifting the widening, where possible, to the inside of curves; replacement of small angles by a smooth curve), minimizing reflection cracks by provision of good subsurface drainage, compaction of widening trench at or near the optimum moisture content, provision of good shoulder support, and the use of substantial overlay to cover the joint) are some practices described. The open trench hazard, and advance coordination with abutting residents and businesses to avoid inconvenience are also discussed. Safety, capacity and maintenance are important factors in planning the widening projects. Long-range and short-range plans, project selection, citizen participation and factors which affect the decision-making process are outlined. The various aspects of design and construction are covered.
