Book excerpt: This volume comprises a collection of 40 chapters by experts dealing with the application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, cartography, visualisation and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to coastal and marine environments around the world. Aimed primarily at the practising marine and coastal zone manager, it provides an up-to-date examination of the application of geo-information and spatial technologies to a wide range of topics such as fisheries, coastal geomorphology, the use of remotely sensed imagery, coastal vegetation mapping, coastal pollution, landscape ecology, and decision support systems (DSS). Audience: This book should be useful to researchers, managers and practitioners at coastal organisations, agencies and research centers, as well as professionals in the marine and coastal GIS and remote sensing industry.
Book Synopsis Aquaculture Perspective of Multi-Use Sites in the Open Ocean by : Bela H. Buck
Download or read book Aquaculture Perspective of Multi-Use Sites in the Open Ocean written by Bela H. Buck and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This volume addresses the potential for combining large-scale marine aquaculture of macroalgae, molluscs, crustaceans, and finfish, with offshore structures, primarily those associated with energy production, such as wind turbines and oil-drilling platforms. The volume offers a comprehensive overview and includes chapters on policy, science, engineering, and economic aspects to make this concept a reality. The compilation of chapters authored by internationally recognized researchers across the globe addresses the theoretical and practical aspects of multi-use, and presents case studies of research, development, and demonstration-scale installations in the US and EU.

Book Synopsis Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing and Mapping for the Development and Management of Marine Aquaculture by : James M. Kapetsky
Download or read book Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing and Mapping for the Development and Management of Marine Aquaculture written by James M. Kapetsky and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this document is to illustrate the ways in which Geographical Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing and mapping can play a role in the development and management of marine aquaculture. The perspective is global. The approach is to employ example applications that have been aimed at resolving many of the important issues in marine aquaculture. The underlying purpose is to stimulate the interest of individuals in the government, industry and educational sectors of marine aquaculture to make more effective use of these tools. A brief introduction to spatial tools and their use in the marine fisheries sector precedes the example applications. The most recent applications have been selected to be indicative of the state of the art, allowing readers to make their own assessments of the benefits and limitations of use of these tools in their own disciplines. Also published in Chinese and Spanish.

Book Synopsis Vulnerability of Agriculture, Water and Fisheries to Climate Change by : Mohamed Behnassi
Download or read book Vulnerability of Agriculture, Water and Fisheries to Climate Change written by Mohamed Behnassi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human activity is changing the global environment at an unprecedented rate while humanity faces a range of complex and interrelated challenges to local, regional and global development, human security and politics. Food security ranks high on the science, policy and development agendas. However, most research linking global change and food systems examines the impact of climate change on agricultural production, or the impact of agriculture on land use, pollution and biodiversity, overlooking interactions with other aspects of the food system – such as food processing, packaging, transportation and consumption and employment derived from these activities. This book demonstrates that new threats to food security which arise from environmental change require more than simply a focus on agricultural practices – what is needed is an integrated food system approach. The authors point out that the process of adapting food systems to global environmental change is not simply a search for technological solutions to increase agricultural yields. Tradeoffs across multiple scales among food system outcomes are a prevalent feature of globalized food systems. Within food systems, there are key underexplored areas that are both sensitive to environmental change and crucial to understanding its implications for food security and adaptation strategies. The authors assert that technical prescriptions alone will not efficiently manage the food security challenge. This book is their contribution to a new paradigm, which addresses food systems holistically by engaging researchers in multiple disciplines to understand the causes and drivers of vulnerability.
