Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The warmouth, Lepomis gulosis, is a small sunfish resembling the rock bass. Although widespread in the eastern United States, it has been recorded in Canada only from southwestern Ontario (Lake Erie and Point Pelee National Park). This report provides information on the fish's geographic distribution, protection status, population sizes and trends, habitat, general biology, factors limiting its population and affecting its habitat, and the special significance of the species. Concludes with an evaluation of the future of the species in Canada.

Book Synopsis Species Distribution Model of Warmouth (Lepomis Gulosus) at Point Pelee National Park by : Megan R. McCusker
Download or read book Species Distribution Model of Warmouth (Lepomis Gulosus) at Point Pelee National Park written by Megan R. McCusker and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Warmouth (Lepomis gulosus) has been assessed as 'Endangered' in Canada (COSEWIC 2015), although it is listed as 'Special Concern' under the Species at Risk Act. Species distribution modeling was conducted for Warmouth at Point Pelee National Park to map suitable habitat within the park for conservation planning. Species distribution modeling was conducted with machine learning using environmental layers (substrate, vegetation, depth, temperature, water quality) within a geographic information system. Warmouth is widespread in Point Pelee National Park and present in all seven of the major ponds. This model provided insight into the location of the most suitable habitat for Warmouth in the park and the environmental characteristics of that habitat. Results of the model indicated that Warmouth habitat at Point Pelee National Park is characterized by shallow water, abundant aquatic vegetation, low turbidity, low pH, high conductivity, and lack of clay substrate."--Abstract, p. iv.
Book Synopsis Species Distribution Model of Warmouth (Lepomis Gulosus) in Long Point Bay, with Evaluation of Climate Change and Phragmites Impact Scenarios by : Megan R. McCusker
Download or read book Species Distribution Model of Warmouth (Lepomis Gulosus) in Long Point Bay, with Evaluation of Climate Change and Phragmites Impact Scenarios written by Megan R. McCusker and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Species distribution modeling was conducted for Warmouth at Long Point Bay to identify environmental characteristics of, and map, suitable habitat. Environmental variables, including depth, substrate, temperature, vegetation, and water quality, were used to predict the species distribution using a machine learning method within a geographic information system. The potential impact of climate change and spread of an invasive reed, Phragmites australis, on Warmouth habitat were also examined. Species distribution modeling identified suitable habitat at Long Point Bay for Warmouth with a high degree of statistical support. However, projections of climate change impacts were varied. If warmer temperatures are considered beneficial to Warmouth, a warmwater species, an expansion of suitable habitat is expected. If Phragmites colonized up to 1 m water depth, Warmouth spawning and nursery habitat would effectively be eliminated."--Abstract, p. iv.

Book Synopsis Centrarchid Fishes by : Steven Cooke
Download or read book Centrarchid Fishes written by Steven Cooke and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-09-08 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centrarchid fishes, also known as freshwater sunfishes, include such prominent species as the Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass and Bluegill. They are endemic to Eastern North America where they form part of a multi-million dollar sports fishing industry, but they have also been widely introduced around the globe by recreational anglers, in aquaculture programs and by government fisheries agencies. Centrarchid Fishes provides comprehensive coverage of all major aspects of this ecologically and commercially important group of fishes. Coverage includes diversity, ecomorphology, phylogeny and genetics, hybridization, reproduction, early life history and recruitment, feeding and growth, ecology, migrations, bioenergetics, physiology, diseases, aquaculture, fisheries management and conservation. Chapters have been written by well-known and respected scientists and the whole has been drawn together by Professors Cooke and Philipp, themselves extremely well respected in the area of fisheries management and conservation. Centrarchid Fishes is an essential purchase for all fish biologists, ecologists, fisheries managers and fish farm personnel who work with centrarchid species across the globe.
Book Synopsis Nematoda by : Andreas Schmidt-Rhaesa
Download or read book Nematoda written by Andreas Schmidt-Rhaesa and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-12-18 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This section of the Handbook of Zoology is intended as a comprehensive and exhaustive account of the biology of the taxa Gastrotricha, Nematoda, Nematomorpha, Priapulida, Kinorhyncha, Loricifera, Gnathostomulida, Micrognathozoa, Rotifera, Seisonida and Acanthocephala, covering all relevant topics such as morphology, ecology, phylogeny and diversity. The series is intended to be a detailed and up-to-date account of these taxa. As was the case with the first edition, the Handbook is intended to serve as a reliable resource for decades. Many of the taxa of this volume are comparatively unknown to many biologists, despite their diversity and importance for example in meiofaunal communities (Gastrotricha, Rotifera, Gnathostomulida), their fascinating recent discoveries (Loricifera and Micrognathozoa), their importance as parasites (many nematodes, Nematomorpha, Acanthocephala) and their importance for evolutionary questions (e.g. Priapulida, Gastrotricha). The groups covered range from those poor in species (such as Micrognathozoa with 2 known species) to the species-rich and diverse Nematoda and their ca. 20.000 described species. While each taxon is covered by one chapter, nematodes are treated in several chapters dedicated to their structural, taxonomic and ecological diversity.
