Book excerpt: A “compassionate, authoritative, and wise” (Mark Hyman, MD, New York Times bestselling author of The Pegan Diet) 30-day program that “will shift the way you think about your body and your health” (Gabrielle Bernstein, #1 New York Times bestselling author and international speaker) based on a paradigm-shifting idea: You have to change your body to change your mind and mood. Perscription for Happiness offers a 30-day program for reaching a new level of energy, clarity, and calm. Too often, conventional medicine treats the mind as separate from the body. However, science shows that physical issues, such as chronic illness and weight fluctuation, are oftentimes intricately entwined with mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, fatigue, and more. This must-read book explores the new science of optimizing the body in ways that will help anyone attain a new baseline for energy, calm, and optimism. Dr. Berzin draws on cutting-edge research and her work with thousands of patients to tell the complete story of how our physical health influences our energy level, mood, focus, and emotional wellbeing. This builds on her work at her nationally renowned holistic health service Parsley Health, where Dr. Berzin and her team of over 100 highly trained medical providers focus on treating the whole patient, yielding extraordinary results for those dealing with gastrointestinal, hormone-related, autoimmune, and mental health conditions. Leveraging Parsley’s unique patient data and successful proprietary protocols, Perscription for Happiness is the ultimate gateway to creating your new baseline for peak physical and mental health.

Book excerpt: The remarkable true story of the document heist that shocked the world. Like many aspiring writers, David Breithaupt had money problems. But what he also had was unsupervised access to one of the finest special collections libraries in the country. In October 1990, Kenyon College hired Breithaupt as its library’s part-time evening supervisor. In April 2000, he was fired after a Georgia librarian discovered him selling a letter by Flannery O’Connor on eBay, but that was only the tip of the iceberg: for the past ten years, Breithaupt had been browsing the collection, taking from it whatever rare books, manuscripts, and documents caught his eye—W. H. Auden annotated typescripts, a Thomas Pynchon manuscript, and much, much more. It was a large-scale, long-term pillaging of Kenyon College’s most precious works. After he was caught, the American justice system looked like it was about to disappoint the college the way it had countless rare book crime victims before—but Kenyon, refused to let this happen . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to managing data in the digital age. Winner of the ALCTS Outstanding Publication Award by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services, Winner of the Waldo Gifford Leland Award by the Society of American Archivists Many people believe that what is on the Internet will be around forever. At the same time, warnings of an impending "digital dark age"—where records of the recent past become completely lost or inaccessible—appear with regular frequency in the popular press. It's as if we need a system to safeguard our digital records for future scholars and researchers. Digital preservation experts, however, suggest that this is an illusory dream not worth chasing. Ensuring long-term access to digital information is not that straightforward; it is a complex issue with a significant ethical dimension. It is a vocation. In The Theory and Craft of Digital Preservation, librarian Trevor Owens establishes a baseline for practice in this field. In the first section of the book, Owens synthesizes work on the history of preservation in a range of areas (archives, manuscripts, recorded sound, etc.) and sets that history in dialogue with work in new media studies, platform studies, and media archeology. In later chapters, Owens builds from this theoretical framework and maps out a more deliberate and intentional approach to digital preservation. A basic introduction to the issues and practices of digital preservation, the book is anchored in an understanding of the traditions of preservation and the nature of digital objects and media. Based on extensive reading, research, and writing on digital preservation, Owens's work will prove an invaluable reference for archivists, librarians, and museum professionals, as well as scholars and researchers in the digital humanities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 5:30 p.m. on May 6, 1970, an embattled Ohio State University President Novice G. Fawcett took the unprecedented step of closing down the university. Despite the presence of more than 1,500 armed highway patrol officers, Ohio National Guardsmen, deputy sheriffs, and Columbus city police, university and state officials feared they could not maintain order in the face of growing student protests. Students, faculty, and staff were ordered to leave; administrative offices, classrooms, and laboratories were closed. The campus was sealed off. Never in the first one hundred years of the university's existence had such a drastic step been necessary. Just a year earlier the campus seemed immune to such disruptions. President Nixon considered it safe enough to plan an address at commencement. Yet a year later the campus erupted into a spasm of violent protest exceeding even that of traditional hot spots like Berkeley and Wisconsin. How could conditions have changed so dramatically in just a few short months? Using contemporary news stories, long overlooked archival materials, and first-person interviews, The Ohio State University in the Sixties explores how these tensions built up over years, why they converged when they did and how they forever changed the university.

Book excerpt: Ohio State students, faculty and staff were photographed by artist and professor Ann Hamilton through a semi-transparent membrane that registersin focus only what immediately touches its surface while rendering more softly the gesture or outline of the body. In these images, touch-something we feel more than we see-is visible. In them, we feel the glance of cloth's fall, the weight of a hand, the press of a cheek, the possibility of recognition in portraits haunted by contact.Standing behind the semi-opaque film, one can hear but can not see, hidden until stepping toward the surface, guided by my voice. Each press of the object, the face, a hand, or cloth touching the membrane is revealed in focus, the shallow depth of field a consequence of the membrane's optical qualities. The images made in this exchange-between a subject that offers self or object and a voice that stands in for the visually absent camera-record an interiority that is perhaps more private, more vulnerable than the self we offer up in the world of a constantly present camera. Following and trusting the voice while having a sense of being hidden makes a space for this vulnerability. Each image is a tactile register of an exchange.
