Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Fixation and Utilization of Nitrogen This report has been prepared in order to correlate and make available under one cover such information on the fixation and utilization of nitrogen, collected by the Nitrate Division since its organization in July, 1917, as may aid in the further development of that art in the United States. It is based to a very considerable extent on reports, papers, and articles prepared by the officers and civilians associated from time to time with the activities of the Nitrate Division, as well as on the published technical and economic papers of several others. In order that it may be of further help to those who desire to make a more detailed study of any of the several phases of this subject, a bibliography of many of the papers pertaining thereto that have appeared in the last few years has been prepared and is included. In this report there is first discussed the world's nitrogen supply and demand, including a brief discussion of the prices of nitrogen, then the development of nitrogen fixation both in this and in foreign countries, then a technical and engineering description of the several nitrogen fixation and conversion processes, a discussion of research in its bearing both on the present and future possibilities of fixation, a history of the Government's activities in nitrogen fixation, a de scription of the United States Government's nitrogen fixation plants, and the bibliography referred to above. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fixation of Atmospheric Nitrogen Comparatively little work of importance on the theoretical Side of nitrogen fixation has appeared since the first edition of this book was published. On the other hand, the development of fixation processes on the technical Side received an enormous impulse under the stress of war conditions. The chief progress has been in the production of synthetic ammonia by the Haber and cyanamide processes, and in the methods of oxidising ammonia to nitric acid. The expansion in the production of synthetic nitrogen compounds has been remarkable. The estimated production of the various nitrogenous compounds for 1917, in Short tons of nitrogen, is given as follows by the American Ordnance Department. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fixation of Atmospheric Nitrogen: A Thesis The two chief sources of the worlds supply of nitrogen are the Chilean nitre fields and the ammonia compounds from.the Monds process in the destructive distillation of coal. The latter source may increase rapidly from its present production of tons per year because of a larger demand for coke due to the increasing smoke prevention laws.the Chilean export in 1830 was about tons.in 1918 it reached the maximum of tons because of the greater needs because of the war. Geologists have figured that the nitre fields will be exhausted in a decade.the chemical industries require large quanities in the manufacture of nitric acid and ammonia.a much great er quanity is used as fertilizer.most Plants are unable to absorb the free inert molecular nitrogen of the atmosphere but can utalize it from such compounds as nitrates and ammonia. With the increased worlds population and there. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen is an essential element for plant growth and development and a key agricultural input-but in excess it can lead to a host of problems for human and ecological health. Across the globe, distribution of fertilizer nitrogen is very uneven, with some areas subject to nitrogen pollution and others suffering from reduced soil fertility, diminished crop production, and other consequences of inadequate supply. Agriculture and the Nitrogen Cycle provides a global assessment of the role of nitrogen fertilizer in the nitrogen cycle. The focus of the book is regional, emphasizing the need to maintain food and fiber production while minimizing environmental impacts where fertilizer is abundant, and the need to enhance fertilizer utilization in systems where nitrogen is limited. The book is derived from a workshop held by the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) in Kampala, Uganda, that brought together the world's leading scientists to examine and discuss the nitrogen cycle and related problems. It contains an overview chapter that summarizes the group's findings, four chapters on cross-cutting issues, and thirteen background chapters. The book offers a unique synthesis and provides an up-to-date, broad perspective on the issues of nitrogen fertilizer in food production and the interaction of nitrogen and the environment.

Book excerpt: Reprinted from Plant and Soil, v.174, nos.1-2 (1995), this volume is devoted to discussions on the role of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in agricultural sustainability. Papers presented on BNF in crop forage and tree legumes are augmented with discussion of integrated farming systems involving BNF, soil and N management, and recycling of legume residues. BNF by non-legumes is discussed and attempts to transform cereals into nodulating plants are critically reviewed. Also described are advances in the development of new methodologies to understand symbiotic interactions and to assess N-2 fixation in the field; means of enhancing BNF through plant and soil management; breeding and selection; problems encountered in exploiting BNF under farmers' field conditions; and promising approaches to improve BNF exploitation.
