Book Synopsis Election Commission of India by : Ujjwal Kumar Singh
Download or read book Election Commission of India written by Ujjwal Kumar Singh and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the constitutional body that conducts elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has emerged as a trusted institution within the shared space of democracy in India. This process has, however, been a fraught one because of contestation over the ECI’s constitutional responsibility and the power of Parliament to make laws to govern electoral matters. This comprehensive monograph discusses the history of the ECI through a study of the measures it has adopted to ensure certainty of procedures in order to maintain the democratic uncertainty of electoral outcome. In this context, innovations such as the Model Code of Conduct have enhanced the rule-making powers of the ECI. Going beyond the ECI’s design and performance framework, Singh and Roy argue that changes in the nature of electoral contests and domination of political regimes have made the task of preserving electoral integrity and assuring its deliberative content a challenging one.
Book Synopsis Religion, Caste, and Politics in India by : Christophe Jaffrelot
Download or read book Religion, Caste, and Politics in India written by Christophe Jaffrelot and published by Primus Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 835 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following independence, the Nehruvian approach to socialism in India rested on three pillars: secularism and democracy in the political domain, state intervention in the economy, and diplomatic non-alignment mitigated by pro-Soviet leanings after the 1960s. These features defined a distinct "Indian model," if not the country's political identity. From this starting point, Christophe Jaffrelot traces the transformation of India throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, particularly the 1980s and 90s. The world's largest democracy has sustained itself by embracing not only the vernacular politicians of linguistic states, but also Dalits and "Other Backward Classes," or OBCs. The simultaneous--and related--rise of Hindu nationalism has put minorities--and secularism--on the defensive. In many ways the rule of law has been placed on trial as well. The liberalization of the economy has resulted in growth, yet not necessarily development, and India has acquired a new global status, becoming an emerging power intent on political and economic partnerships with Asia and the West. The traditional Nehruvian system is giving way to a less cohesive though more active India, a country that has become what it is against all odds. Jaffrelot maps this tumultuous journey, exploring the role of religion, caste, and politics in determining the fabric of a modern democratic state.

This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book offers an insight into the contribution of the Election Commission of India (EC) to the Indian democratic process through its regulatory role in conducting elections between 1990 and 2019. It elaborates upon the EC's interactions with pivotal state institutions - the parliament, the Supreme Court and political parties - to streamline democratic procedures during the aforementioned period. It demonstrates a comparison between important electoral procedures in India and those in other liberal democracies (Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and South Africa, among others) to highlight the role of electoral institutions in democratisation. It also studies the sociopolitical situatedness of the EC as a body that moulds the political culture in India"--
Book Synopsis India After Gandhi by : Ramachandra Guha
Download or read book India After Gandhi written by Ramachandra Guha and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2011-02-10 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born against a background of privation and civil war, divided along lines of caste, class, language and religion, independent India emerged, somehow, as a united and democratic country. Ramachandra Guha’s hugely acclaimed book tells the full story – the pain and the struggle, the humiliations and the glories – of the world’s largest and least likely democracy. While India is sometimes the most exasperating country in the world, it is also the most interesting. Ramachandra Guha writes compellingly of the myriad protests and conflicts that have peppered the history of free India. Moving between history and biography, the story of modern India is peopled with extraordinary characters. Guha gives fresh insights into the lives and public careers of those long-serving Prime Ministers, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. But the book also writes with feeling and sensitivity about lesser-known (though not necessarily less important) Indians – peasants, tribals, women, workers and musicians. Massively researched and elegantly written, India After Gandhi is a remarkable account of India’s rebirth, and a work already hailed as a masterpiece of single volume history. This tenth anniversary edition, published to coincide with seventy years of India’s independence, is revised and expanded to bring the narrative up to the present.
