Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The identity politics of the householder Naths (Yogis), on the one hand, is one of the oldest and most persistent identity assertions in Bengal and Assam. On the other, for an array of reasons, the identity assertion of the householder Naths of Bengal and Assam has failed to draw academic curiosity so far. Since the late nineteenth century, a segment of the Naths, largely educated and elite, has been crafting their identity as Brahman grounded on their “origin myth”, negotiating with the British colonial administration through different census enumerations, as well as internal social reforms. One of the primary reasons for their current lagging is that the Naths never politicised their identity and demands, and did not mobilise themselves in the democratic political arena.
Book Synopsis North-East India: Land, People and Economy by : K.R. Dikshit

This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North-East India, comprising the seven contiguous states around Assam, the principal state of the region, is a relatively unknown, yet very fascinating region. The forest clad peripheral mountains, home to indigenous peoples like the Nagas, Mizos and the Khasis, the densely populated Brahmaputra valley with its lush green tea gardens and the golden rice fields, the moderately populated hill regions and plateaus, and the sparsely inhabited Himalayas, form a unique mosaic of natural and cultural landscapes and human interactions, with unparalleled diversity. The book provides a glimpse into the region’s past and gives a comprehensive picture of its physical environment, people, resources and its economy. The physical environment takes into account not only the structural base of the region, its physical characteristics and natural vegetation but also offers an impression of the region’s biodiversity and the measures undertaken to preserve it. The people of the region, especially the indigenous population, inhabiting contrasting environments and speaking a variety of regional and local dialects, have received special attention, bringing into focus the role of migration that has influenced the traditional societies, for centuries. The book acquaints the readers with spatial distribution, life style and culture of the indigenous people, outlining the unique features of each tribe. The economy of the region, depending originally on primitive farming and cottage industries, like silkworm rearing, but now greatly transformed with the emergence of modern industries, power resources and expanding trade, is reviewed based on authentic data and actual field observations. The epilogue, the last chapter in the book, summarizes the authors’ perception of the region and its future.

Download or read book The Assamese written by Audrey Cantlie and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984, The Assamese is an anthropological exploration of Assam. The many tribes living in the hill tracts of Assam early engaged the attention of anthropologists but no significant studies have been made of the people living in the Assam valley who call themselves Assamese, the distinctive features of whose culture are inseparably connected with their religious institutions. The purpose of this book is to give an account of the way of life which the Assamese people are seeking to preserve, and its chief claim to attention is that it is the very first field-study of the village foundations of social life in Assam, containing a plenitude of detailed information on local aggregates, caste divisions, modes of livelihood, devotional practices, marriage patterns, and much else. This book will be of interest to students of anthropology, ethnic studies, history and cultural studies.

Book excerpt: Addressing an important gap in the historiography of modern Assam, this book traces the relatively unexplored but profound transformations in the agrarian landscape of late- and post-colonial Assam that were instrumental in the making of modern Assamese peasantry and rural politics. It discusses the changing relations between various sections of peasantry, state, landed gentry, and politics of different ideological hues — nationalist, communist and socialist — and shows how a primarily agrarian question concerning peasantry came to occupy the centre stage in the nationalist politics of the state. It will especially interest scholars of history, agrarian and peasant studies, sociology, and contemporary politics, as also those concerned with Northeast India.

Book Synopsis Migrants and the COVID-19 Pandemic by : Satveer Kaur-Gill
Download or read book Migrants and the COVID-19 Pandemic written by Satveer Kaur-Gill and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-06 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on migrants globally who bear disproportionate burdens of health disparities. Centering the voices of migrants as anchors for theorizing health, the chapters adopt an array of decolonizing and interventionist methodologies that offer conceptual communicative resources for re-organizing economics, politics, culture, and society in logics of care. Each chapter focuses on the health of migrants during the pandemic, highlighting the role of communication in amplifying and solving the health crisis experienced by migrants. The chapters draw together various communicative resources and practices tied to migrant negotiations of precarity and exclusion. Health is situated amidst the forces of authoritarianism, disinformation, hate, and exploitation targeting migrant bodies. The book builds a narrative archive witnessing this fundamental geopolitical rupture in the 21st century, documenting the violence built into the zeitgeist of labor exploitation amidst neoliberal transformations, situating health with the extractive and exploitative forms of organizing migrant labor. The book is essential reading for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses for scholars studying critical and global health, development, and participatory communication, migration, globalization, international and intercultural communication interested in the questions of precarity and marginality of health during pandemics.
