Download or read book Hong Kong written by Stephen Chiu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-09 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hong Kong is a small city with a big reputation. As mainland China has become an 'economic powerhouse' Hong Kong has taken a route of development of its own, flourishing as an entrepot and a centre of commerce and finance for Chinese business, then as an industrial city and subsequently a regional and international financial centre. This volume examines the developmental history of Hong Kong, focusing on its rise to the status of a Chinese global city in the world economy. Chiu and Lui's analysis is distinct in its perspective of the development as an integrated process involving economic, political and social dimensions, and as such this insightful and original book will be a core text on Hong Kong society for students.

Book Synopsis The Chinese Triangle of Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong by : Alvin Y. So
Download or read book The Chinese Triangle of Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong written by Alvin Y. So and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-07-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese triangle of mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan constitutes one of the most dynamic regions in the world economy. Since the late 1970s, these three societies have experienced increasing economic integration; however, studies aimed at analyzing and explaining this integration have often overlooked the very important role social institutions have played in the shaping of this process. To fill this gap, this book adopts a systematic institutional approach designed to examine the different patterns of institutions in the three countries and to discuss how such social institutions as the economy, gender, social networks, and the Chinese diaspora have exerted a profound impact on all three societies. The chapters, taken together, argue that different patterns of institutional configuration have led to divergent paths of development, and that this divergence will have significant implications on the prospects for Chinese national reunification in the twenty-first century. The Introductory chapter provides a historical discussion on the origins and the transformation of the Chinese triangle during the second half of the twentieth century. The remainder of the volume is broken into four topics considered crucial for understanding the transformation of the Chinese triangle: economic transformation, gender, social networks, and the Chinese diaspora. As globalization impacts the Chinese triangle, studies that consider the issues from the perspective of social institutions will be increasingly important to understanding the area as it develops in the world economy.
Book Synopsis Made by Hong Kong by : Suzanne Berger
Download or read book Made by Hong Kong written by Suzanne Berger and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1997 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term 'Made By Hong Kong' describes the production network that Hong Kong industry has extended into China and elsewhere in the region. The 'Made in Hong Kong' manufacturing experience has been used in one of the world's most extensive experiments in the globalization of production. What can other entrepreneurs preparing to expand into China learn from the Hong Kong story? An interdisciplinary team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology investigated these questions in a year-long study of Hong Kong industry from the micro to macro level, involving nearly 400 organizations in Hong Kong, China, and elsewhere in Asia. Made By Hong Kong challenges the common view that industry in Hong Kong has no future, and asserts instead that it has a great opportunity to combine its manufacturing capabilities with innovative services. Hong Kong industry is well positioned to contribute to the new generations of service-enhanced products that will be the mainstay of twenty-first-century manufacturing. The authors offer strategies for upgrading 'Made By Hong Kong' production, and assess the prospects of various industries, old and new.
Book Synopsis Economic Governance and the Challenge of Flexibility in East Asia by : Frederic C. Deyo
Download or read book Economic Governance and the Challenge of Flexibility in East Asia written by Frederic C. Deyo and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2002-05-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the institutional underpinnings of East Asia's dynamic growth by exploring the interplay between governance and flexibility. As the challenges of promoting and sustaining economic growth become ever more complex, firms in both advanced and industrializing countries face constant pressures for change from markets and technology. Globalization, heightened competition, and shorter product cycles mean that markets are increasingly volatile and fragmented. To contend with demands for higher quality, quicker delivery, and cost efficiencies, firms must enhance their capability to innovate and diversify. Achieving this flexibility, in turn, often requires new forms of governance—arrangements that facilitate the exchange of resources among diverse yet interdependent economic actors. Moving beyond the literature's emphasis on developed economies, this volume emphasizes the relevance of the links between governance and flexibility for understanding East Asia's explosive economic growth over the past quarter century. In case studies that encompass a variety of key industrial sectors and countries, the contributors emphasize the importance of network patterns of governance for facilitating flexibility in firms throughout the region. Their analyses illuminate both the strengths and limitations of recent growth strategies and offer insights into prospects for continued expansion in the wake of the East Asian economic crisis of the late 1990s. Contributions by: Richard P. Appelbaum, Lu-lin Cheng, Stephen W. K. Chiu, Frederic C. Deyo, Richard F. Doner, Dieter Ernst, Eric Hershberg, Tai Lok Lui, Rajah Rasiah, David A. Smith, and Poh-Kam Wong.

This book was released on 2016-01-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we account for the dynamic growth of East and Southeast Asian countries? Much of the debate has turned on the question of the 'state' versus the 'market' as exclusive (and often competing) explanations of the successful performance of individual countries. This book explores the distinctively interdependent nature of the East and Southeast Asian experience. As firms create a regional organization of production, the growing interdependence of national labour markets is one major outcome.
