Book excerpt: “When truth teller and careful writer bell hooks offers a book, I like to be standing at the bookshop when it opens.” –Maya Angelou Renowned visionary bell hooks explored the meaning of love in American culture with the critically acclaimed bestseller All About Love: New Visions. She continued her national dialogue with the bestselling Salvation: Black People and Love. Now hooks culminates her triumphant trilogy of love with Communion: The Female Search for Love. Intimate, revealing, provocative, Communion challenges every woman to courageously claim the search for love as the heroic journey we must all choose to be truly free. In her trademark commanding and lucid language, hooks explores the ways ideas about women and love were changed by the feminist movement, by women's full participation in the workforce, and by the culture of self-help, and reveals how women of all ages can bring love into every aspect of their lives, for all the years of their lives. Communion is the heart-to-heart talk every woman -- mother, daughter, friend, and lover -- needs to have.

Book Synopsis More Than Communion by : Scott MacDougall
Download or read book More Than Communion written by Scott MacDougall and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-21 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dominant contemporary model for ecclesiology (theological views of the church itself) is the ecclesiology of communion. MacDougall argues that communion ecclesiologies are often marked by a problematic theological imagination of the future (eschatology). He argues further that, as a result, our ways of practising and being the church are not as robust as they might otherwise be. Re-imagining the church in the light of God's promised future, then, becomes a critical conceptual and practical task. MacDougall presents a detailed exploration of what communion ecclesiologies are and some of the problems they raise. He offers two case studies of such theologies by examining how distinguished theologians John Zizioulas and John Milbank understand the church and the future, how these combine in their work, and the conceptual and practical implications of their perspectives. He then offers an alternative theological view and demonstrates the effects that such a shift would have. In doing so, MacDougall offers a proposal for recovering the 'more' to communion and to ecclesiology to help us imagine a church that is not beyond the world (as in Zizioulas) or over against the world (as in Milbank), but in and for the world in love and service. This concept is worked out in conversation with systematic theologians such as Jürgen Moltmann, Wolfhart Pannenberg, and Johannes Baptist Metz, and by engaging with a theology of Christian practices currently being developed by practical theologians such as Dorothy C. Bass, Craig Dykstra, and those associated with their ongoing project. The potential for the church to become an agent of discipleship, love, and service can best be realised when the church anticipates God's promised perfection in the full communion between God and humanity, among human beings, within human persons, and between humanity and the rest of creation.

Download or read book The Communion Letters written by Anne Strieber and published by Crossroad Press. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE HEART OF THE MYSTERY They are called Others, Visitors, Grays, Friends, or Strangers. No one knows who or what they are. But due to intense investigations of the past few years, resulting from the publication of the controversial bestseller Communion, their reality is no longer a question. THEY ARE AMONG US. These letters, often awkward, sometimes incredulous, and always searingly honest, document the fact that hundreds of thousands have experienced the Communion phenomena: childhood visitations, the "nine knocks," mysterious scars and implants, abductions, sexual encounters, and "black sedans." It's all here. Unvarnished and irrefutable. Assembled for the first time, these letters lead us to the heart of the greatest mystery of our age. For it is in these authentic personal encounters of ordinary men and women that we come closest to the truth about who They are and what They want with us. In the dramatic words of Whitley Strieber, these letters report—a courtship.
