Book Synopsis Self-Determination and Secession in International Law by : Christian Walter
Download or read book Self-Determination and Secession in International Law written by Christian Walter and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peoples and minorities in many parts of the world assert a right to self-determination, autonomy, and even secession from a state, which naturally conflicts with that state's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The right of a people to self-determination and secession has existed as a concept within international law since the American Declaration of Independence in 1776, but the exact definition of these concepts, and the conditions required for their application, remain unclear. The Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice concerning the Declaration of Independency of Kosovo (2010), which held that the Kosovo declaration of independence was not in violation of international law, has only led to further questions. This book takes four conflicts in the post-Soviet Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) as a starting point for examining the current state of the law of self-determination and secession. Four entities, Transnistria (Moldova), South Ossetia, Abkhazia (both Georgia), and Nagorno-Karabakh (Azerbaijan), claim to be entitled not only to self-determination but also to secession from their mother state. For this entitlement they rely on historic affiliations, and on charges of discrimination and massive human rights violations committed by their mother state. This book sets out its analysis of these critical issue in three parts, providing a detailed understanding of the principles of international law on which they rely: The first part sets out the contours and meaning of self-determination and secession, including an overall assessment of secession within the Commonwealth of Independent States. The second section provides case studies investigating the events in Transnistria, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, and Nagorno-Karabach in greater detail. The third and final section extends the scope of the examination, providing a comparative analysis of similar conflicts involving questions of self-determination and secession in Kosovo, Western Sahara, and Eritrea.
Book Synopsis Democracy, Ethnic Diversity, and Security in Post-Communist Europe by : Anita I. Singh
Download or read book Democracy, Ethnic Diversity, and Security in Post-Communist Europe written by Anita I. Singh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-06-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inder Singh examines why international organizations including the UN, OSCE, and Council of Europe advocated democratic governance, based on the rule of law and respect for human and minority rights, as the method by which states should try to accommodate their ethnically mixed populations. She discusses how realistic this advice has been, given the tension between the principle of the sovereignty of states and their international obligations, and the extent to which democratization had made for ethnic and political stability in post-communist Europe. Inder Singh demonstrates that this advocacy of democracy to handle ethnic diversity questions the perception of nationalism as a cause of war and disorder. This pathbreaking study will be of appeal to academics and policy makers interested in how the management of ethnic diversity through democracy can enhance domestic and international security.
Book Synopsis Democratic Transformation and Obstruction by : Nelli Babayan
Download or read book Democratic Transformation and Obstruction written by Nelli Babayan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although "democracy promotion" has become a popular term for policy makers and scholars, democratization is rarely a smooth or linear transition. While some countries quickly democratize, others lag behind despite a long period of democracy promotion activities. Furthermore, while democracy promotion itself has been widely studied, there is a paucity of literature available assessing the outcome or the impact of democracy promotion. This book investigates democracy promotion by the European Union and the United States of America, and seeks to uncover why intensive democracy promotion has resulted in limited democratic progress. Exploring case studies of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, this book examines the conditions in which democracy promotion is more likely to result in democratic transformation. In addition, it introduces the concept of the "democracy blocker," a powerful authoritarian regional actor that is capable of blocking democratization in other countries. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of Political Science, Democracy, Democratization, EU Studies, US Politics, Comparative Politics, and Foreign Policy.

Book Synopsis Armenia’s Velvet Revolution by : Anna Ohanyan
Download or read book Armenia’s Velvet Revolution written by Anna Ohanyan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 2018, Armenia experienced a remarkable popular uprising leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan and his replacement by protest leader Nikol Pashinyan. Evoking Czechoslovakia's similarly peaceful overthrow of communism 30 years previously, the uprising came to be known as Armenia's 'Velvet Revolution': a broad-based movement calling for clean government, democracy and economic reform. This volume examines how a popular protest movement, showcasing civil disobedience as a mass strategy for the first time in the post-Soviet space, overcame these unpromising circumstances. Situating the events in Armenia in their national, regional and global contexts, different contributions evaluate the causes driving Armenia's unexpected democratic turn, the reasons for regime vulnerability and the factors mediating a non-violent outcome. Drawing on comparative perspectives with democratic transitions across the world, this book will be essential reading for those interested in the regime dynamics, social movements and contested politics of contemporary Eurasia, as well as policy-makers and practitioners in the fields of democracy assistance and human rights in an increasingly multipolar world.

Book Synopsis Women's Individual Voting Rights by : Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe
Download or read book Women's Individual Voting Rights written by Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family voting is a patriarchal custom that allows men to vote with or for women family members, and this practice has been identified in several of the new European democracies by election observers since 1995. This custom deprives women of their right to a secret vote and contributes to their marginalisation in political life. This report explores this aspect of gender inequality in political systems and contains recommendations to combat it, including Recommendation 111 (2002) of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe on women's individual voting rights: a democratic requirement.
