Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty has long been a developmental challenge in the Global South in general and in sub-Saharan Africa in particular. With a fifth, mainly from the rural areas of the world, living below the poverty datum line, the world has a huge challenge to reduce poverty, worse still to eradicate it from the face of the earth. A target was set through the 2000-2015 United Nations (UN) Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and subsequently through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to reduce poverty by at least half by the years 2015 and 2030 respectively. In pursuing this goal, livelihoods of poor people though meeting with serious challenges, especially in rural areas, play a major role. This book explores the role played by people-centred Public Works Programmes in the fight against poverty and the development of rural communities in Africa. Whereas a number of countries in Africa have been approaching the issue of poverty through several interventions including Public Works Schemes, it is sad to note that poverty still tops the rankings among numerous economic and social challenges facing the continent. One wonders whether the public works strategy is misguided, misconstrued or mismanaged considering that its main objective is to make the unemployed more employable through the provision of temporary employment and training opportunities. The book concludes that Public Works Programmes, if well managed and people-centred, are one of the best ways to alleviate and even eradicate poverty in rural Africa, as it allows governments to make partnership with people, and facilitates implementation while giving space for economic self-sustenance, growth and development.

Book Synopsis Gender and Social Protection in the Developing World by : Rebecca Holmes
Download or read book Gender and Social Protection in the Developing World written by Rebecca Holmes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of pounds of international development funds are invested annually in social protection programmes to tackle poverty. Poverty is perpetuated by risk and vulnerability, much of which is gendered. Despite this, little attention has been paid to gender-sensitive policy and programme design and implementation. Gender and Social Protection in the Developing World introduces a much-needed gender lens to these debates. Drawing on empirical evidence from poor households and communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America, the book provides rich insight into the effects of a range of social protection instruments. It concludes that with relatively simple changes to design and with investment in implementation capacity, social protection can contribute to transforming gender relations at the individual, intrahousehold and community levels. With a foreword by Stephen Devereux.
Book Synopsis Pakistan's Development by : Gustav F. Papanek
Download or read book Pakistan's Development written by Gustav F. Papanek and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s Pakistan was generally considered to be a country that would remain among the poorest in the world, but economic development in the decade to follow exceeded all expectations. Gustav Papanek, in the first thorough analysis of this achievement, shows how Pakistan, partly by design and partly by accident, arrived at a successful blend of private initiative and government intervention in the economy. This book, which includes the only comprehensive industrial survey of an underdeveloped country, sheds considerable light on the problems facing nations in similar circumstances.
Book Synopsis A World of Widows by : Margaret Owen
Download or read book A World of Widows written by Margaret Owen and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 1996-09 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A World of Widows provides a global overview of the status for widowhood. Neglected by social policy researches, international human rights activists and the women's movement, the status of the world's widows - legal, social, cultural, and economic - is an urgent issue given the extent and the severity of the discrimination against them. Margaret Own explores the process of becoming a widow; poverty and social security in the context of widowhood; differing laws and customs regarding widow's inheritance; the situation of widows who remarry and issues of sexuality and health. She also looks at the needs of specific groups of widows - refugees, older widows, child widows - and widowhood in the context of AIDS. Throughout, she shows the prevalence of discrimination against widows in inheritance rights, land ownership, custody of children, security of home and shelter, nutrition and health. The book concludes with a summary of widowhood as a human rights issues and an overview of widows themselves organising for change.

Book Synopsis Inclusive Development Through Guaranteed Employment by : Ashok Pankaj
Download or read book Inclusive Development Through Guaranteed Employment written by Ashok Pankaj and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-12-02 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the inclusive development experiences and impacts of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). It discusses the theoretical assumptions underlying the inclusive development of Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS), and draws conclusions based on robust data and real-world experiences with the MGNREGS – which has attracted global attention as India’s most ambitious, rights-based development initiative and most expansive work-based social security measure, the world’s largest public works programme, and people-centric approach to development. The book argues that the Scheme holds vast potential, and, in fact, has made significant contribution to the promotion of livelihoods of the poorest of the poor, but that the weak institutions of local-self-governance, entrusted for implementation of the Scheme, are incapable of exploiting them to the full. It ends with a concrete policy suggestion: the inclusive development experiences gathered with the EGS and presented here could offer a source of policy change in many developing Afro-Asian countries whose situations are similar to India’s, provided the local conditions in the respective country are taken into consideration when designing the EGS. Its significance as a social security measure has increased in post-COVID loss of jobs and livelihoods of the poor.
