Book Synopsis The Special Constabulary by : Karen Bullock
Download or read book The Special Constabulary written by Karen Bullock and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Special constables are warranted officers retained within British constabularies. Wearing similar uniforms, carrying the same personal protective equipment and holding identical powers to enforce the criminal law, special constables are to all intents and purposes indistinguishable from their colleagues in the regular police service. However, very little is documented about the experiences and motivations of special constables, the roles they play in contemporary policing or the impact that they have on the police organisation. This book draws together academics and practitioners to provide a valuable insight into historical, international and contemporary themes pertinent to the historical development and contemporary operation of the special constabulary. The book critically considers the origins of the special constabulary and the political, social and economic factors which led to its evolution over time. It compares and contrasts the organisation, functions and status of the special constabulary with other auxiliary forces, notably from the United States. The book also contributes to theoretical understanding of contemporary policing, to debates about the roles and operation of the 'mixed economy' of provision, and informs policy and practice in the United Kingdom and beyond.
Book Synopsis Everyone a Sheriff by : Martin Alan Greenberg
Download or read book Everyone a Sheriff written by Martin Alan Greenberg and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Everyone a Sheriff, the word "sheriff" serves as a metaphor for programs involving citizens in social control initiatives. Partnership between community members and their local police force is at the heart of any effective strategy aimed at reducing urban crime and insecurity. Ordinary community residents represent a vast, untapped resource in the fight against crime, disorder, and fear. The real story of citizens long association with the policing function is revealed. The book highlights include: an in-depth examination of volunteerism primarily at the law enforcement level; the importance of preparing youth and minorities for careers in policing and homeland security; the need for transitioning police and citizen volunteers from serving not only as peacekeepers, but becoming "peacemakers"; a realistic view of various pitfalls when regular and volunteer police are thrust into patterns of co-existence when fighting crime out on the street or seeking solutions to crime; numerous examples of current police-sponsored citizen academies, police cadet and junior deputy programs; histories of the invention of police and citizen-supported neighborhood crime watch programs. The only way to successfully cross the divide between the police and public is to give meaning to the phrase: "the police are the people, and the people are the police."

Download or read book The Rebirth of Private Policing written by Les Johnston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-06-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: these are just two of the issues addressed by Les Johnston, who argues that policing, far from being the exclusive preserve of public personnel, is an activity undertaken by a mixture of public, private, and quasi-public agents. His book reviews the history of private policing, examines developments of current concern, and finally considers the implications of these developments both for the sociology of policing and for a more general understanding of public-private relations in the late 20th century.

Book Synopsis Preparing for Power by : Jack Hepworth
Download or read book Preparing for Power written by Jack Hepworth and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-10 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book employs a history of ideas approach to trace the complex journey of the Revolutionary Communist Party (RCP) and its afterlives. Although the RCP existed for barely two decades, it left a curiously lasting impact on British politics, and its legacies have provoked bewilderment, suspicion, and animosity. Formed as the Revolutionary Communist Tendency in 1978, the RCP represented a distinct and often controversial offshoot of the Trotskyist left. Campaigning principally around 'unconditional support for Irish freedom' and anti-racism, RCP cadres expounded an independent revolutionary politics to supersede capitalism. In the 1990s, however, the RCP leadership ruefully declared that the working class had suffered an historic defeat, and the party dissolved in 1996. Combining wide-ranging archival research and twenty-four life-history interviews with former activists, Preparing for Power examines ideological continuity and change among the ex-RCP milieu. Explaining the party's key ideas, their evolution, and their retrospective contestation, Jack Hepworth analyses the RCP's trajectory in a broader political context. In doing so, Hepworth illuminates a network which has been the subject of considerable media sensation and polemical attention.
