Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Twelfth Year of the Work of Pacific Garden Mission for the Year Ending Sept. 10, 1889 The last year has been the most successful one, judging by human observation, of the whole twelve years' work. The audiences have been larger, and the number of those seeking a better life at the altar has been much greater than ever before as will b seen by the table of statistics on other pages of this report. Our friends have been more generous and more people have contributed to the support of the Mission than in any preceding year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Work of the Thirteenth Year of the Pacific Garden Mission, Ending Sept; 10th, 1890 This thirteenth year of the work of the Mission has been the best. In many respects of all its work in the past. More people have been reached with the Gospel, more assistance has been given to the poor and sick, and more people have pro fessed a desire to be saved from lives of sin. More drunkards have been saved, more broken up families have been reunited, and more work in visitation to the jail and from house to house has been done. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Eleventh Year of the Work of Pacific Garden Mission for the Year Ending Sept. 1st, 1888 Cards of invitation are given out on the street each night and Sunday morning by the yoke fellows, and display cards on the windows of the Mission announcing the meetings, are the chief means used, with the singing, to attract people in off the streets. Short Gospel addresses, much Singing, repeating of Bible texts by the audience, many earnest prayers, and the testi monies of the converts and Others, closing with an after meeting and an altar service, is the usual manner of con ducting the meetings. Communion services are held each month. Of which all the lovers of our Lord, without distinction of creed, are at liberty to partake, after suitable admonitions are given by the leader of the meeting. The converts are advised to connect themselves with some Christian church, and to take. Upon themselves some regular Christian work, either in the church or at the Missions, and we are happy to state that the advice given them is for the most part heeded. Many drinking men have been saved to their families and friends, and many homes have been made happy.. Many poor and sick have been helped many mourning hearts have been comforted; and many, heretofore criminals, have been made honest men; and many poor lost girls have been rescued by the Mission, during the past year. Many strangers passing through the city and stopping over for a night or two, have found salvation for themselves at the Mission, and have gone on their way rejoicing, to lead a better life, and to make their home and friends happy. We have kept a record of the members in attendance so far as we could, and also of those professing to seek the salvation of their souls during the past year, the report of which is given elsewhere. We know not how many have been truly converted to God, but we have reason to believe that the num ber is very large. many of the converts of the Mission are active workers in other fields of labor in other cities. Villages and communities; some are ordained Ministers and Evangel ists. We often hear from these by letter or otherwise, and are happy to find them generally successful and happy in their Christian work. In another part of this report will be found a few letters from some of these, which will furnish a sampleof the whole. The finances required to carry on the work have been in former years largely contributed by the founders of the Mission, but during the last year the friends of the Mission have contributed much more largely than ever before, and so the burden has been correspondingly less 011 us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Work of the Nineteenth Year of the Pacific Garden Mission: Ending September 15th, 1896 September 15th closes another chapter in the history of Pacific Garden Mission. Three hundred and. sixty-five days have brought us to another anniversary, which marks the most wonderful record since the work began. Pen would fail to describe, or words express, the saving grace of God that has been manifested nightly, and the thousands of souls that have been rescued, and gone on their way rejoicing. As we review the work, and the goodness of God another year, our hearts are melted into tenderest gratitude, for His manifest presence, for continued health, and unabated prosperity. We enter upon the new year with large expectations, claiming His promises for our heritage. Perhaps only an eye witness could be convinced of the vast number of strangers that are passing through our cit, coming and going to the four quarters of the earth. Letters from Alaska, Mexico, South Africa, the extreme East and West are boundaries from whence we are receiving communications. From an audience of from 400 to 500 perhaps one-fourth are strangers who are passing through the city, or are among the wanderers who are going they know not where. We want to say, to the praise of God, that not a single night during the past year, has the interest abated without regard to temperature or surroundings. At the first peal of the organ there is an ingathering that lingers until the latest moment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Work of the Seventeenth Year: Of the Pacific Garden Mission, Ending September 15, 1894 For seventeen years the Gospel Message has been sounding forth at the Pacific Garden Mission, and this 15th day of September, 1894, we celebrate the most eventful anniversary in its history. Words fail to convey the gratitude that fills our hearts as we recall the manifold blessings that has attended this work another year; how God's blessing has been upon every meeting; the marvelous work of grace that has been wrought in so many lives, how the outcast has been reclaimed, the wanderers brought back, suicides prevented and broken homes reunited. The wonderful testimonies given from night to night can only convey the depth from which so many have been reclaimed. How the gambler has found power over the destroying passion of his life, the drunkard, after resorting to every remedy that skill or science could devise, has only found the Grace of God sufficient to conquer the raging thirst, the self-righteous man to realize his utter helplessness, and the would be skeptic convinced of the mighty power of the Gospel to save. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Work of the Fifteenth Year of the Pacific Garden Mission Ending September 15, 1892 Since issuing our last report my dear husband has been taken from us, and a great shadow has fallen upon the Mission to Which he had given the best thoughts and efforts of a couse crated life. For its welfare, he had laid himself upon the alter of God, year by year, and God had accepted the gift, pouring upon it the riches of His Grace and Love, until the Master said: Well done enter thou into the joy of the Lord. A vacancy has been made, that can never be filled, and yet, with praise to God, we record that the work has been in no Wise abated, but rather by the marked presence of the spirit, has gone on with ever increasing power. Bro. Chas. Cook, one of our regular leaders of meetings, has also fallen asleep in Jesus. He was a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and his presence is sadly missed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one who is even slightly familiar with the work and testimony of the Pacific Garden Mission will question the accuracy of the story here set forth. Rather, he will exclaim with Sheba's queen, “The half hath not been told.” It would not be possible to inscribe in a book the greatest triumphs of this work, for they are of so sacred a character that human language could not portray or express them aright. They are among those spiritual things which are spiritually discerned. If all the details of those sixty-five years were to be put down on paper, so far as it is possible to describe them, it would take more than the Library of Congress to house the books that would have to be written. Only eternity will reveal all that the work of Col. and Mrs. Clarke and their successors has meant to poor sin-laden humanity for whom Christ died. Nor were these poor derelicts the only ones benefited by contact with this great work. Some of the ablest preachers and teachers of the Word were trained to a large extent in the Pacific Garden Mission. Perhaps there is no greater expounder of Scripture in America than Dr. William Evans, who is internationally known and whose messages have been blessed to thousands in this and many other lands. As a student of the Moody Bible Institute, young Evans led the singing and played a cornet at the Mission and later served for two years as an assistant to Harry Monroe. He counts the time spent in that work as part of the schooling that fitted him for his later worldwide ministry. It has been my privilege to know many of those mentioned in this volume. I have seen the grace of God leading them on in Christ's triumph. I have recognized their lowly, self-sacrificing interest in others who are still where they once were. I have noted their dependence on God, and have been moved by their simplicity as they went to Him in prayer, believing He meant what He said when He bade them be not anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving make known their requests. And I know they were upheld by the Hand of Omnipotence which they grasped in faith as they knelt at the cross. Theirs’s has been a real salvation from real sin and wickedness. But I must not attempt to hold anyone longer at the door. Open and enter in and see for yourself this great galaxy of those who have surrendered to the cross of Christ. And as you move on through these stirring chapters you will find yourself exclaiming with awe and reverence “What hath God wrought!” H. A. IRONSIDE, LITT. D.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Kenney Reports is a classic account of a combat commander in action. General George Churchill Kenney arrived in the South- west Pacific theater in August 1942 to find that his command, if not in a shambles, was in dire straits. The theater commander, General Douglas MacArthur, had no confidence in his air element. Kenney quickly changed this situation. He organized and energized the Fifth Air Force, bringing in operational commanders like Whitehead and Wurtsmith who knew how to run combat air forces. He fixed the logistical swamp, making supply and maintenance supportive of air operations, and encouraging mavericks such as Pappy Gunn to make new and innovative weapons and to explore new tactics in airpower application. The result was a disaster for the Japanese. Kenney's airmen used air power-particularly heavily armed B-25 Mitchell bombers used as commerce destroyers-to savage Japanese supply lines, destroying numerous ships and effectively isolating Japanese garrisons. The classic example of Kenney in action was the Battle of the Bismarck Sea, which marked the attainment of complete Allied air dominance and supremacy over Japanese naval forces operating around New Guinea. In short, Kenney was a brilliant, innovative airman, who drew on his own extensive flying experiences to inform his decision-making. General Kenney Reports is a book that has withstood the test of time, and which should be on the shelf of every airman.

Book excerpt: Getting the Message Through, the companion volume to Rebecca Robbins Raines' Signal Corps, traces the evolution of the corps from the appointment of the first signal officer on the eve of the Civil War, through its stages of growth and change, to its service in Operation DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM. Raines highlights not only the increasingly specialized nature of warfare and the rise of sophisticated communications technology, but also such diverse missions as weather reporting and military aviation. Information dominance in the form of superior communications is considered to be sine qua non to modern warfare. As Raines ably shows, the Signal Corps--once considered by some Army officers to be of little or no military value--and the communications it provides have become integral to all aspects of military operations on modern digitized battlefields. The volume is an invaluable reference source for anyone interested in the institutional history of the branch.

Individuals representing the fingerprint, academic, and scientific communities met in Chicago, Illinois, for a day and a half to discuss the state of fingerprint identification with a view toward the challenges raised by Daubert issues. The meeting was a joint project between the International Association for Identification (IAI) and West Virginia University (WVU). One recommendation that came out of that meeting was a suggestion to create a sourcebook for friction ridge examiners, that is, a single source of researched information regarding the subject. This sourcebook would provide educational, training, and research information for the international scientific community.

These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.
