Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV), the cause of these dramatic consequences, is one of the smallest animal viruses, yet is often quoted as being the most infectious agent known. This book, for the first time, presents the story of FMDV as written by world experts on the virus. Initial chapters describe the structure of the virus and what is known of the molecular mechanisms that enable it to replicate faster than any other known animal virus. Anti-FMD vaccines are made in vast quantities and can be extremely effective for disease control. However, the ability of the virus to change rapidly is a constant headache for vaccine manufacturers. Both vaccine production and virus evolution are reviewed comprehensively. In addition to vaccination, disease control requires accurate and sensitive diagnostic procedures and effective hygiene measures. Modern molecular epidemiology and the measures available for infection control are described in further chapters." "Finally, the role of wildlife in the spread and maintenance of FMD is discussed."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has been recognized in printed records dating from the sixteenth century, and since the eradication of rinderpest (cattle plague) in the early part of the twentieth century it has been rec- nized as the most important and feared disease of cattle and other dom- tic livestock. The beginning of the twenty-first century brought the worst outbreak of FMD ever experienced in England, which had been completely free of the disease for 33 years. This tragic epidemic, which spread to Northern Ireland, Scotland, France and the Netherlands with severe e- nomic consequences, emphasized the need for further research into better methods for the detection and control of the disease. FMD is caused by a small RNA virus which is highly contagious and can survive in meat and other animal products for long periods at normal pH levels. The virus typically infects cloven-hoofed animals, including c- tle, goats, pigs and sheep, as well as a wide range of non-domesticated a- mals in regions of the world where FMD virus is endemic, such as the Af- can continent. There are seven recognized serotypes of FMD virus, with numerous subtypes, and as a consequence vaccine production and administration is complex and a major debate surrounds every disease outbreak regarding the relative merits of vaccination as opposed to the slaughter of all infected animals.

Book Synopsis Control of Infectious Animal Diseases by Vaccination by : Alejandro Schudel
Download or read book Control of Infectious Animal Diseases by Vaccination written by Alejandro Schudel and published by Karger Medical Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph contains the proceedings from the International Conference on the Control of Infectious Animal Diseases by Vaccination held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in April 2004. It provides up-to-date information and examples of successful controls of various diseases, including transboundary diseases, e.g. foot-and-mouth disease, rinderpest and bluetongue, as well as parasitic infestations by using traditional or marker vaccines. The publication aims at improving the international standards related to the use of vaccines and presents recommendations to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). All the partners in the decision-making process for controlling diseases, i.e. chief veterinary officers, animal health regulatory officials, veterinarians, cattle-raising associations and consumer associations will find useful advice for the elimination or eradication of pathogens. This volume will also be of great interest to professors in veterinary medicine, animal health researchers at universities, public research laboratories and commercial organisations developing vaccines with markers or without viral non-structural proteins for distinguishing between infected and vaccinated animals.

Book Synopsis Conservation and Development Interventions at the Wildlife/livestock Interface by : Steven A. Osofsky
Download or read book Conservation and Development Interventions at the Wildlife/livestock Interface written by Steven A. Osofsky and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2005 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a forum held at the Vth IUCN World Parks Congress in South Africa in 2003, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the IUCN SSC Veterinary and Southern Africa Sustainable Use Specialist Groups (VSG and SASUSG) brought together nearly 80 experts from Africa and beyond to develop ways to tackle the immense health-related conservation and development challenges at the wildlife/domestic animal/human interface facing East and Southern Africa today, and tomorrow. This volume focuses on several themes of critical importance to the future of animal agriculture, wildlife, and, of course, people: competition over grazing and water resources, disease mitigation, local and global food security and other potential sources of conflict related to the overall challenges of land-use planning and the pervasive reality of resource constraints. This publication seeks to draw attention to the need to move towards a "one health" perspective - an approach that was the foundation of the discussions in Durban, and a theme pervading these thought-provoking, insightful, and practical Proceedings.
