Book excerpt: The Lambeth Commission, established by the Archbishop of Canterbury, was charged with examining the legal and theological implications flowing from the Episcopal Church's decision to appoint a priest in a committed same sex relationship as a bishop and the Canadian Diocese of New Westminster's authorization of services for same sex unions. It was also charged with examining and making practical suggestions about how the provinces of the Anglican Communion may relate when they feel unable to remain in full communion with one another. The report focuses on reconciliation. The Primates' Standing Committee of the Anglican Communion called the commission's unanimous endorsement of the report "a sign of hope." "If there is a real desire to walk together in our discipleship of Christ," the Primates' Committee said in a statement, "then a course can be plotted to maintain the highest degree of Communion possible, in spite of differences about the way in which Christ's Gospel is to be interpreted in a diverse and troubled world."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays was originally presented at the St. Margaret's Consultation on Doctrine, Liturgy, and Preaching held at St. Margaret's Anglican Church in Winnipeg, Canada in 2008. They consider human sexuality and marriage from a distinctly theological rather than polemical standpoint, aiming to avoid frequently polarized debates. The interesting commonality indicated in the articles is that sex and marriage are not about self-fulfillment, but are outwardly directed, aimed toward the other person, toward growth, maturity, and deepened spirituality, for the benefit of the church, for productive good, and for children. The first section explores theological and ethical issues surrounding human sexuality and aims toward understanding the nature of relationships in these contexts. The second section explores the spiritual nature of marriage and the history of thinking on marriage and family within Christian theology. For those interested in pursuing truly theological engagement with marriage and sexuality, this collection is required reading.

Download or read book Sing a New Song written by Julie H. Ferguson and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, Sing a New Song tells the stories of four Canadian bishops who pushed the envelope and changed the world. All have faced severe opposition; one was involved in the only Anglican schism in Canadian history; two jeopardized their careers; and one was voted the sixth most important person of the twentieth century whose world view has transformed the wider society. Over the last 150 years, George Hills, David Somerville, Douglas Hambidge, and Michael Ingham adopted unpopular causes with their eyes wide open. They were the men who fought for and won rights for aboriginals, women, and gays and lesbians. In finely drawn and thoroughly researched biographies, Julie H. Ferguson weaves the bishops’ impact on society into Canada’s history while delivering compelling insights into their personal and spiritual lives. Meet this quartet of sharply contrasting and fearless bishops in Sing a New Song.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Anglican Studies by : Mark David Chapman
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Anglican Studies written by Mark David Chapman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anglican Communion is the third largest Christian denomination and claims a membership of some 80 million members in about 164 countries. Given that there are only around two hundred countries in the world, this makes the churches of the Anglican Communion the most geographicallywidespread denomination after Roman Catholicism. The 44 essays in this volume embrace a wide range of academic disciplines: theological; historical; demography and geography; and different aspects of culture and ethics. They are united in their discussion of what is effectively a newinter-disciplinary subject which we have termed "Anglican Studies". At the core of this volume is the phenomenon of "Anglicanism" as this is expressed in different places and in a variety of ways across the world. This Handbook covers a far broader set of topics from a wider range of perspectives than has been hitherto attempted in Anglican Studies. At the same time, it doesn't impose a particular theological or historical agenda. The contributions are drawn from across the spectrum of theological views andopinions. It shows that the unsettled nature of the polity is part of its own rich history; and many will see this as a somewhat lustrous tradition. In its comprehensive coverage, this volume is a valuable contribution to Anglican Studies and helps formulate a discipline that might perhaps promotedialogue and discussion across the Anglican world.

Book Synopsis Understanding the Windsor Report by :
Download or read book Understanding the Windsor Report written by and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2003 was a tempestuous year in the Anglican Communion. The Episcopal Church USA gave its canonical consent to the election of an openly gay priest, the Rev. V. Gene Robinson. In the Anglican Church of Canada, a Diocese authorized a liturgical rite for the blessing of same-sex unions. Responding to the outcry from many parts of the Anglican Communion, the Archbishop of Canterbury appointed a special commission to analyze the events and make recommendations for preserving unity amid disagreement. The commission's findings, published as The Windsor Report in October 2004 have generated as much controversy as the events that prompted them. But what does the report actually mean to the Episcopal Church? A comprehensive summary by Jan Nunley of the report and its aftermath puts those questions into context, while a conversational commentary organized around important themes by Douglas and Zahl, two very different voices, reflects on its recommendations and implications for the future of the church.

Book Synopsis Trans Life and the Catholic Church Today by : Nicolete Burbach
Download or read book Trans Life and the Catholic Church Today written by Nicolete Burbach and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-08-22 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While transgender and non-binary identities are increasingly visible, too many Christians have either maintained a fearful silence, or have attacked 'transgenderism' as a threat to Christian faith and practice. More serious theological reflection is needed, not least of all in the Roman Catholic tradition. Moreover, the Catholic context presents particular challenges that are relevant beyond the Catholic world, due to the Church's widespread involvement in healthcare provision and education, and its traditions of thought around these activities. This volume considers the various questions to do with trans people in the life of the Church from an interdisciplinary, Catholic, ecumenical perspective, reaching out to academics, clergy and educated lay readers. It brings together perspectives from a variety of disciplines to provide a rigorous, wide-ranging engagement with these pressing issues; and includes a number of trans contributors, making their voices present in these discussions, which are about them, but from which they are often excluded. The first three chapters illustrate the development of Catholic thinking on transgender issues in recent decades. The second section of the book considers transgender identity from multiple perspectives: canon legal; legal; sociological, clinical; bioethical; and educational. The last two chapters of the second section shift the focus in the direction of theology and pastoral practice, themes that are explored by emerging theological scholars in the third section of the book.

Book Synopsis Defending Same-Sex Marriage by : Martin Dupuis
Download or read book Defending Same-Sex Marriage written by Martin Dupuis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-12-30 with total page 887 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we find ourselves at a crossroads of two powerful, unrelenting currents that are completely at odds with one another. The movement for legal recognition of same-sex unions has gone beyond the separate but equal status of civil unions to demand equality in marriage for all couples. Progress is being made on many fronts: mayoral action, clergy officiating at same-sex marriage and union ceremonies, state legislative responses, and street protests, to name a few. Meanwhile, opposition to same-sex marriage has also been gathering strength. The struggle is sure to continue unabated for some time to come, pitting those who believe in the traditional definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman—and who seek to codify this belief in the U.S. Constitution—against those who find the basis for marriage between two loving, committed individuals not only in the history of our civil rights legislation and court decisions, but also in scripture and sacred religious traditions. Those who believe in extending to same-sex couples the 1,049 rights conferred by marriage as well as the supportive embrace of religious communities seek to strengthen the institution of marriage by making it inclusive and by passing laws and broadening doctrines to uphold marriage rights for all couples. This three-volume set clarifies the legal, political, religious, cultural, and social ramifications of same-sex marriage for gay and lesbian couples and their families and friends, and for the general public interested in the future of civil rights in the United States.
