Download or read book Nunavut written by Jens Dahl and published by IWGIA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nunavut story told in this book by authors who have all been involved with Nunavut and Inuit politics for a very long time is an important one for indigenous peoples around the world - and for anyone interested in indigenous issues. Stressing the political dynamics of the beginning of Nunavut's autonomous life, the authors provide a clear and accurate account of a remarkable political process. Following an introductory focus on three fundamental questions: Why did Nunavut come to life, what are the challenges and opportunities to come, and what is to be learned from this experience? - the book continues with an investigation of Nunavut, its history and structure and the most recent developments and their impact on the people of Nunavut.
Book Synopsis Arctic Promise by : Natalia Loukacheva
Download or read book Arctic Promise written by Natalia Loukacheva and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Canada's Eastern Arctic and Greenland, the Inuit have been the majority for centuries. In recent years, they have been given a promise from Canadian and Danish governments that offers them more responsibility for their lands and thus control over their lives without fear of being outnumbered by outsiders. The Arctic Promise looks at how much the Inuit vision of self-governance relates to the existing public governance systems of Greenland and Nunavut, and how much autonomy there can be for territories that remain subordinate units of larger states. By means of a bottom-up approach involving cultural immersion, contextual, jurisprudential, and historical legal comparisons of Greenland and Nunavut, The Arctic Promise examines the forms, evolution, and scope of the right to autonomy in these Arctic jurisdictions. Loukacheva argues that the right to autonomy should encompass or protect Inuit jurisdiction in legal systems and the administration of justice, and should allow the Inuit direct participation in international affairs where issues that affect their homelands are concerned. The Arctic Promise deals with areas of comparative constitutional law, international law, Aboriginal law, legal anthropology, political science, and international relations, using each to contribute to the understanding of the right to indigenous autonomy.
Download or read book Made in Nunavut written by Jack Hicks and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 1, 1999, after decades of dreams and negotiations and years of planning, the Inuit-dominated territory of Nunavut came into being in Canada’s Eastern and Central Arctic. This was a momentous occasion, signifying not only the first change to the map of Canada in over half a century but also a remarkable achievement in terms of creating a new government from the ground up. Made in Nunavut provides the first behind-the-scenes account of how the Government of Nunavut was designed and implemented. Written by leading authorities on governance in the Canadian Arctic, this book pays particular attention to the most distinctive and innovative organizational design feature of the new government – the decentralization of offices and functions that would normally be located in the capital to small communities spread out across the vast territory. It also critically assesses whether decentralization has delivered “better” government for the people of Nunavut.

Download or read book Road to Nunavut written by Quinn Duffy and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1988-03-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gradually, and somewhat reluctantly, the Canadian government assumed the role of guardian of the Inuit and became involved in their housing, education, employment, and health services. The evolution of government-supported services created problems that are still unmet; the changes in life-style that resulted were exacerbated by unemployment and the Inuit's inferior social and political status. Starting in the 1960's, these complex problems led to increased delinquency, violence, and abuse of alcohol. Duffy shows how the Inuit gradually assumed responsibility for improving their situation, eventually developing the political maturity that found expression in the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada, its affiliated organizations, and the pressure for regional self-determination.

Book Synopsis Legislatures of Small States by : Nicholas Baldwin
Download or read book Legislatures of Small States written by Nicholas Baldwin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comparative study of the legislatures of small nations, states and territories, to explore the extent to which size is a factor in how they function and fulfil the roles and responsibility of a legislature. Though the physical nature and environment of states is a neglected subject in political science research, this book examines the impact of small state size on the structure and functions of legislatures and contributes to a better understanding of the interplay of physical and social factors. Focussing on legislatures in democratic nations or in territories that are parts of democratic units, the book features case studies on Malta, Bermuda, Jersey, Guernsey, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Lesotho, Liechtenstein, the Isle of Man, Commonwealth Caribbean, Nunavut (Canada), Pacific islands, Swaziland, and Scotland. Contributors employ an interdisciplinary approach to examine both the outcomes and causes of different political mechanisms, and bring to the surface underlying correlation between small states through their analysis. Legislatures of Small States will be of interest to students and scholars of international politics, comparative politics and legislative studies.
Book Synopsis Dependency, Autonomy, Sustainability in the Arctic by : Hanne Petersen
Download or read book Dependency, Autonomy, Sustainability in the Arctic written by Hanne Petersen and published by Ashgate Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a discussion of issues, processes and values which have been of general importance in the 20th century, and which have become especially important in the Arctic region during the last few decades of the 20th century. The book employs a regional perspective and as such deals with issues of special relevance and pertinence for populations of the Arctic. The problems and perspectives are however also of interest for indigenous peoples in general, as well as relevant for populations living under different types of self-government and home rule regimes. The book focuses on the interrelationship between political and economic concepts of dependency and autonomy and the concept of sustainability.
Download or read book Provinces written by Christopher Dunn and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provinces is both a study of Canadian provincial government and a review of comparative politics. As such, it represents a long overdue return to the comparative tradition with its emphasis on subject-specific studies across the country. The chapters in this revised edition of Provinces, each of which has been written for the book by a leading scholar, are arranged according to four major sections?political life, institutions, public administration, and public policy?making the book highly suitable for those interested in areas beyond provincial politics. At the same time, the adopted comparative approach reveals a wealth of insight into Canadian politics at the beginning of the new millennium. This new edition covers some of the vital concerns of our time: a disquiet about the quality of democracy, concern about women?s place in provincial societies, interest in the nature and potential of governance in the north, unease on the question of the fiscal imbalance between all orders of government, a sensitivity to the needs of cities and communities, assessment of the retrenchment of the state, and consideration of the policy futures influenced by the changing demography of the provinces. Special Combined Price: Provinces, second edition may be ordered together with The Provincial State in Canada: Politics in the Provinces and Territories at a special discounted price. In order to secure the package price, the following ISBN must be used when ordering: 978-1-55402-587-9.
