Book Synopsis The Atlantic Salmon by : Eric Verspoor
Download or read book The Atlantic Salmon written by Eric Verspoor and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlantic Salmon is a cultural icon throughout its North Atlantic range; it is the focus of probably the World’s highest profile recreational fishery and is the basis for one of the World’s largest aquaculture industries. Despite this, many wild stocks of salmon are in decline and underpinning this is a dearth of information on the nature and extent of population structuring and adaptive population differentiation, and its implications for species conservation. This important new book will go a long way to rectify this situation by providing a thorough review of the genetics of Atlantic salmon. Sponsored by the European Union and the Atlantic Salmon Trust, this book comprises the work of an international team of scientists, carefully integrated and edited to provide a landmark book of vital interest to all those working with Atlantic salmon.

This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil is essential for life – it provides nutrients, water and minerals to plants and trees, and is home to millions of insects, bacteria and small animals. Without soil, we would not be able to grow any crops or other useful plants, support any livestock, or have materials for building shelter – soil really is a life-giver! Healthy soils also store and filter water, recycle nutrients and help us to deal with the negative effects of climate change by storing large amounts of carbon. But our soils are at risk; negative actions such as pollution and bad agricultural practices leave our soils exposed and damaged. We need healthy soils to support human well-being and a healthy planet. This is where the Soils Challenge Badge comes in: let it take you on a journey to discover the ground beneath your feet! This booklet is packed with activities to help you learn about soil and how it is formed, the creatures that live in it, and just how important it is in our everyday lives. You will also discover how YOU can play a role in protecting soils for future generations. We hope you will be inspired to take the challenge and celebrate our planet’s soils. Dig in!

Book Synopsis Yield gap analysis of field crops by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Yield gap analysis of field crops written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To feed a world population that will exceed 9 billion by 2050 requires an estimated 60% increase over current primary agricultural productivity. Closing the common and often large gap between actual and attainable crop yield is critical to achieve this goal. To close yield gaps in both small and large scale cropping systems worldwide we need (1) definitions and techniques to measure and model yield at different levels (actual, attainable, potential) and different scales in space (field, farm, region, global) and time (short and long term); (2) identification of the causes of gaps between yield levels; (3) management options to reduce the gaps where feasible and (4) policies to favour adoption of sustainable gap-closing solutions. The aim of this publication is to critically review the methods for yield gap analysis, hence addressing primarily the first of these four requirements, reporting a wide-ranging and well-referenced analysis of literature on current methods to assess productivity of crops and cropping systems.
