Book excerpt: Excerpt from Repetition and Parallelism in English Verse: A Study in the Technique of Poetry Our rhetorics, in other words, have been constructed from a study Of prose, whereas the devices permissible to poetry have been almost wholly overlooked.* It is my purpose in the following pages to direct attention to two structural peculiarities, occurring chiefly in lyric poetry, that seem to me to be deserving. Of much more generous recognition than has hitherto been accorded them. The rhet otics, it is true, usually devote several paragraphs to repetition and parallelism, the latter being treated under the head of the balanced sentence, but it is to be observed that the functions Of repetition and parallelism are widely different in prose and verse. Poe's works first suggested to us this subject. Repetition of words and parallelism of construction form such a distinctive feature of the great American writers style both in prose and in poetry that we dwelt upon them at length in our former work; the more so as no scholar has ever, as far as we know, treated of this neglected question but Prof. C. Alphonso Smith, of Louisiana University, who, in a suggestive little book, devoted a few pages to it. The Baton Rouge professor rightly shows both the interest and importance of this new point of view. "The current works on English metre," he says, even the most exhaustive of them, do not adequately set forth some of the most important elements that enter into the subject of English verse. If the reader has had frequent occasion to subject some favourite poem, long stored in his memory, to the traditional metrical analysis, however rigid, he has doubtless more than once been convinced that the structural peculiarities most intimately characterizing the given poem are just those that the analysis has left untouched. Examining a wide range of poetry, Professor Leech considers many aspects of poetic style, including the language of past and present, creative language, poetic licence, repetition, sound, metre, context and ambiguity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No fewer than 223 verses in Proverbs appear two times (79 sets), three times (15 sets), or even four times (5 sets) in identical or slightly altered form—more than 24% of the book. Heim analyzes all of these, presenting them in delineated Hebrew lines and in English translation. Where appropriate, the translations are followed by textual notes that discuss uncertainties regarding the textual witnesses (textual criticism) and explore lexical, grammatical, and syntactical problems. Heim also analyzes the way the parallelism in each verse of a variant set has been constructed, presenting diagrams and tables with columns that highlight the corresponding similarities and differences among repeated verses. Key to this investigation is the search for links between the variants and their surrounding verses, such as repetitions of sound and sense. Heim shows that most variant repetitions result from skillful poetic creativity. Reconstruction of the editorial and creative poetic process highlights what poets did, how they did it, and why they did it. He develops criteria for determining the direction of borrowing between the verses and demonstrates that the phenomenon of variant repetition is an editorial concern that operates on the level of the book as a whole. He develops and refines a range of interpretive techniques and skills, arrives at fresh interpretations, and shows that ancient proverbial wisdom is relevant to modern societies. This study sheds new light on the nature of biblical poetry and on the methods and virtues best suited for its study. While specific to the book of Proverbs in the first instance, the findings in this study apply to poetry elsewhere. Three fundamental insights should inform future work on poetry: the creative combination of repetition with variation is the very essence of poetry; what has been written with imagination should be read with imagination; imaginative interpretation values the normal features of poetic expression and celebrates the truly unusual.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W.H. Auden said of Tennyson that 'he had the finest ear, perhaps, of any English poet'. Many readers have relished his opulent word-music, but less simply admiring critics have sometimes regarded that marvellous verbal gift with something like suspicion - as though it were merely a matter of beautifully empty words, or worse, a distracting screen used to pass off disreputable Victorian values. In this study, Seamus Perry returns to the extraordinary language of Tennyson's verse, and finds in the intricacies of his greatest poetry, not an evasion of responsibilities, but rather the memorably intricate expression of hesitancies and honest doubts - including doubts, not least, about the charms and obligations of his own art. Covering the great range of the poet's long career, Perry describes the rich life of Tennyson's lyrical imagination, exploring in turn its complex and paradoxical fascinations with recurrence, progress, narrative, and loss.
