Book excerpt: Around the year 1200, the Cistercian Engelhard of Langheim dedicated a collection of monastic stories to a community of religious women. Martha G. Newman explores how this largely unedited collection of tales about Cistercian monks illuminates the religiosity of Cistercian nuns. As did other Cistercian storytellers, Engelhard recorded the miracles and visions of the order's illustrious figures, but he wrote from Franconia, in modern Germany, rather than the Cistercian heartland. His extant texts reflect his interactions with non-Cistercian monasteries and with Langheim's patrons rather than celebrating Bernard of Clairvaux. Engelhard was conservative, interested in maintaining traditional Cistercian patterns of thought. Nonetheless, by offering to women a collection of narratives that explore the oral qualities of texts, the nature of sight, and the efficacy of sacraments, Engelhard articulated a distinctive response to the social and intellectual changes of his period. In analyzing Engelhard's stories, Newman uncovers an understudied monastic culture that resisted the growing emphasis on the priestly administration of the sacraments and the hardening of gender distinctions. Engelhard assumed that monks and nuns shared similar interests and concerns, and he addressed his audiences as if they occupied a space neither fully sacerdotal nor completely lay, neither scholastic nor unlearned, and neither solely male nor only female. His exemplary narratives depict the sacramental value of everyday objects and behaviors whose efficacy relied more on individual spiritual formation than on sacerdotal action. By encouraging nuns and monks to imagine connections between heaven and earth, Engelhard taught faith as a learned disposition. Newman's study demonstrates that scholastic questions about signs, sacraments, and sight emerged in a narrative form within late twelfth-century monastic communities.

Book excerpt: Attributed to Apollodorus of Athens (born c. 180 BCE), but probably composed in the first or second century BCE, the Library provides a grand summary of Greek myths and heroic legends about the origin and early history of the world and of the Hellenic people. The Library provides in three books a grand summary of traditional Greek mythology and heroic legends. Written in clear and unaffected style, the compendium faithfully follows the Greek literary sources. It is thus an important record of Greek accounts of the origin and early history of the world and their race. This work has been attributed to Apollodorus of Athens (born c. 180 BCE), a student of Aristarchus. But the text as we have it was written by an author probably living in the first or second century of our era. In his highly valued notes to the Loeb Classical Library edition (which is in two volumes) J. G. Frazer cites the principal passages of other ancient writers where each particular story is told and compares the various versions to those in the Library.

The book delves into the thematic elements of Strindberg's works, exploring concepts of rebellion, individualism, and existential crisis. Lind-af-Hageby's writing style is both insightful and analytical, providing readers with a comprehensive understanding of Strindberg's literary significance in the context of late 19th-century European literature. The book also includes critical interpretations of Strindberg's major plays, shedding light on the deeper meanings behind his often controversial work. L. Lind-af-Hageby, a respected literary scholar and critic, brings a wealth of knowledge and perspective to this study of August Strindberg. Her profound admiration for Strindberg's contributions to the literary canon serves as a driving force behind the book, offering readers a deeper appreciation for the playwright's revolutionary ideas and creative vision. Lind-af-Hageby's meticulous research and attention to detail make this book a valuable resource for both academic researchers and general readers interested in Scandinavian literature.
