Book excerpt: The proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) poses the single greatest threat to the national security of the United States. As Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has noted, The greatest threat to our society at the moment are the weapons of mass destruction. Those are the weapons that know no boundaries. Yet efforts to stem the spread of these weapons suffered serious setbacks during the past year. Every week brought news of Iranian and North Korean missile tests; of the possible terrorist use of deadly biological and chemical agents; and, most dramatically, of nuclear tests in the deserts and mountains of South Asia. There has never been a better time for a new, comprehensive review of the troubled state of the international non-proliferation regime along with credible solutions for today's most pressing proliferation problems. Repairing the Regime, is just such a book. In early 1999, 450 experts from 17 nations attended the Carnegie International Non-Proliferation Conference in Washington DC, the most important annual gathering in the non-proliferation field. This collection reflects their passionate debates on the key issues, trends, and dilemmas facing all of us today. It provides strong arguments for both marshaling international resources to repair and sustain the global non-proliferation regime and for dealing concretely with the particular security concerns of the nations and regions most affected by contemporary threats. Repairing the Regime looks at a multitude of strategies for strengthening controls on WMD and increasing security around the world.

Book Synopsis Disaster Response by Ceauşescu’s Communist Regime in Romania by : Karin Steinbrueck
Download or read book Disaster Response by Ceauşescu’s Communist Regime in Romania written by Karin Steinbrueck and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-21 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the first comprehensive history using extensive primary sources to trace the 1977 earthquake disaster response by the Ceauşescu communist regime, contextualizing its contribution to the public risk that remains in Romania's capital Bucharest. It traces a history of one authoritarian government’s disaster response linking its decisions and ultimate inactions to contemporary public risk. The book begins with a stand-alone chapter to introduce readers to twentieth-century Communist Romania and contextualize the Ceauşescu regime’s response. It provides insights into how Radio Free Europe filled the information vacuum, how the political police, the Securitate, worked as first responders, and how scientific experts debated the best course of action. It examines how the regime requested specific foreign assistance and activated its Securitate abroad to encourage such, prioritized restoration of the economy, and "encouraged" domestic cash and labor contributions in the name of recovery. The book examines how the disaster response abruptly ended, leaving thousands of structurally unsafe buildings. It explains the contemporary seismic risk and post-communist mitigation efforts to reduce it. This book will be of interest to students, researchers, and policy-makers in the fields of history, disaster studies, urban planning, politics, and those interested in communist-era Romania, Europe, and Eurasia; totalitarian and authoritarian regimes.

Book Synopsis Building Regulations applying to electrical and gas installation and repairs in dwellings by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Communities and Local Government Committee
Download or read book Building Regulations applying to electrical and gas installation and repairs in dwellings written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Communities and Local Government Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labelling on electrical equipment sold by DIY stores must be used to warn that it is illegal for an unregistered person to carry out most electrical works in the home. In addition, public awareness about the risk of the odourless, invisible and potentially lethal carbon monoxide fumes must be raised to increase safety in the home. When it comes to gas and electrical safety, the Committee concludes that far too many homeowners do not appreciate either the dangers of using sub-standard engineers or their own liability when it comes to faulty gas and electrical work. The Government must co-ordinate a concerted effort by key industry organisations to raise public awareness levels on these crucial issues. To that end the Committee recommends that sockets and other electrical equipment sold by DIY stores for electrical installations should carry a health warning that it is illegal for an unregistered person to carry out most electrical works in the home without checks being completed meeting the requirements of the Building Control service. The Committee will be writing to all the big electrical/DIY stores to highlight this key recommendation. In its current consultation exercise into Building Regulations, the Government has examined further deregulation of Part P, which focuses on electrical installation and repair. The Committee highlights how evidence gathered since the introduction of these rules demonstrated that deaths and injuries due to electrical faults have decreased. De-regulation can only be supported if there was clear evidence that safety standards would not suffer, but such evidence has not been provided by the Government.

Book Synopsis Spares, Repairs, and Intellectual Property Rights by : Christopher Heath
Download or read book Spares, Repairs, and Intellectual Property Rights written by Christopher Heath and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although supplying spare and replacement parts and providing repair services form the basis of many legitimate businesses, many manufacturing enterprises seek to augment the competitive advantage realized at the market stage of selling their main products by attempting to monopolize the market for spares, repairs and refills. Increasingly, companies are using intellectual property laws to devise up-front business strategies to gain exclusive rights in the components of their products. This is the first in-depth analysis of the law in this relatively new and rapidly developing area of practice. It sheds clear light on the conflicting interests of manufacturers, consumers, spare parts makers and the general public; explores the extent to which this kind of business strategy can be more or less successful with respect to the different rights involved, and in different jurisdictions; and highlights the competition issues that inevitably arise. The essays included are revised and updated versions of papers presented at the seventh (2006) of the innovative IP conference organized annually by the Macau Institute of European Studies (IEEM) on intellectual property law and the economic challenges for Asia. Among the topics and issues covered are the following: ; notions of andrepairand and andrecycleand and their legal effects; the limits of IP rights in relation to repair and recycle; legal limits of end user licence agreements (EULAs) and technological protection measures (TPMs); patent exhaustion on repair and recycling; alteration of product andidentityand; the concept of andindirectand or andcontributoryand infringement; design law strategies; and secondary market definitions. The authors give detailed attention to cases in various jurisdictions that have guided and continue to guide business strategies in the field. Jurisdictions treated include the EU, the US, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, China, Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea. In its clarification of the limits and possibilities of business strategies in this area of competition that is just beginning to attract attention, this book will be of great value not only to intellectual property law practitioners but to business people in nearly any field of production, especially where cross-border marketing is involved.
Book Synopsis Termination of Tenancies for Tenant Default by : Great Britain: Law Commission
Download or read book Termination of Tenancies for Tenant Default written by Great Britain: Law Commission and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-10-31 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following on from a consultation paper (Consultation paper 174; ISBN 0117302562) published in January 2004, this report contains proposals for reform of the law regarding the termination of a tenancy during its term, by a landlord, due to the tenant having broken the terms of the tenancy agreement. It sets out, in the form of a draft Bill, a new statutory scheme for the termination of tenancies, including a new concept of 'tenant default', to replace the current law of forfeiture. The proposed scheme would define the circumstances in which a landlord may seek to terminate a tenancy early, require the landlord to warn the tenant of the impending action by giving a written notice, and confers enhanced protection on those with interests deriving out of the tenancy. The report is divided into eight parts with three appendices, and issues considered include: problems with the current law of forfeiture of tenancies and the case for reform; the various components of the proposed scheme, including the concept of tenant default and the stages of a landlord's 'termination claim'; and the role of the court.
Book Synopsis Managing the Modern Workplace by : Alan Booth
Download or read book Managing the Modern Workplace written by Alan Booth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recurring theme in the history of modern Britain in the twentieth-century has been the failure of its manufacturing industry and the record of disorder and conflict in the industrial workplace. This image was reinforced by the evidence of national strikes from the 1960s until 1984. This emphasis on decline and disorder in British manufacturing has distorted our understanding of workplace relationships and cultures in the post-war years. This volume provides a fresh assessment of the diverse and complex world of the workplace and Britain's production cultures during the long boom. Essays investigate the public and private sectors, and both manufacturing and service industries. The volume begins with a comparison of labour management in the post-war automobile industry, exploring the role of the foreman in the management of shop floor labour in Britain and the USA. The following two essays are concerned with relations between management and workers in the publicly-owned corporations. The first examines negotiations over pay and effort at the Swindon locomotive works, including the cultural values which informed the behaviour of the bargainers. The second investigates managerial responses to technical change in the British gas industry. We then move into the service sector, with an essay on the management of clerical staff in banks, including a discussion of the different roles available to male and female workers, and the incorporation of automated technologies. The final essay looks at the involvement of the unions in workplace productivity and the extent to which Labour politics informed union behaviour. The essays in this volume shed new light on the reasons for Britain's economic performance and opens up earlier interpretations of national decline and adversarial workplace cultures for further debate.
Book Synopsis Repairing Infrastructures by : Christopher R. Henke
Download or read book Repairing Infrastructures written by Christopher R. Henke and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of the causes and consequences of the strange, ambivalent, and increasingly central role of infrastructure repair in modern life. Infrastructures—communication, food, transportation, energy, and information—are all around us, and their enduring function and influence depend on the constant work of repair. In this book, Christopher Henke and Benjamin Sims explore the causes and consequences of the strange, ambivalent, and increasingly central role of infrastructure repair in modern life. Henke and Sims offer examples, from local to global, to investigate not only the role of repair in maintaining infrastructures themselves but also the social and political orders that are created and sustained through them. Repair can encompass not only the kind of work we most commonly associate with the term but also any set of practices aimed at restoring a sense of normalcy or credibility to the places and institutions we inhabit in everyday life. From cases as diverse as the repair of building systems on a university campus, a conflict over retrofitting a bridge while protecting murals painted on it, and the global challenge posed by climate change, Henke and Sims assemble a range of examples to illustrate key conceptual points about the role of repair. They show that repair is an essential if often overlooked aspect of understanding the broader impact and politics of infrastructures. Understanding repair helps us better understand infrastructures and the scope of their influence on our lives.

Book Synopsis The British Navy and the State in the Eighteenth Century by : Clive Wilkinson
Download or read book The British Navy and the State in the Eighteenth Century written by Clive Wilkinson and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Prominent in building Britain's maritime empire in the eighteenth century, the Royal Navy also had a significant impact on politics, public finance and the administrative and bureaucratic development of the British state. The Navy was the most expensive branch of the state, and its effective funding and maintenance was a problem that taxed the ingenuity of a succession of politicians, naval officers and bureaucrats. The Navy, in many ways a victim of its own success, grew faster than the infrastructure that supported it and the public purse that funded it. By the middle of the century the difficulties this growth created had become critical, and the challenge this presented was taken up by Admiralty Boards led by Anson, Egmont, Hawke and Sandwich. Resolving these problems introduced administrative reforms and innovations in the Navy's administration and in public finance, some of which pre-figured later bureaucratic development. There was however a political price to pay, when the management of the Navy and its apparent unpreparedness for the War of American Independence made the Earl of Sandwich and the Navy a focus for political opposition to an unpopular government and a disappointing war."--BOOK JACKET.
