Book excerpt: Distortion-induced fatigue affects a large number of bridges within the US highway system. This type of damage is commonly observed at connections between cross frames and steel girders. The differential displacement induced by bridge traffic induces forces in the cross frames that cause out-of-plane distortion of the web, inducing highly localized stresses at the welds that tie the connection plate used to attach the cross frame to the girder. This report describes the results of an experimental program to evaluate the use of composite materials to prevent and repair distortion-induced fatigue damage in web-gap regions of steel girders. In this method of repair, a composite block is cast in place in the area surrounding the cross frame-to-girder connection to provide an alternate load path and reduce the stress demands in the welds of the connection. Two full-depth bridge girders were subjected to dynamic loading under a constant force range and allowed to develop fatigue cracks. The girders were subsequently repaired using composite blocks and subjected to several million fatigue cycles. Test results showed that the repair method was effective in halting the propagation of fatigue cracks in the bridge girders, and that it was particularly effective when anchor bolts were attached to the girder flange.

Book excerpt: Steel bridges and structures often need strengthening due to increased live loads, or repair due to corrosion or fatigue cracking. This thesis explores the use of adhesively bonded prestressed carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP) strips in retrofitting intact steel girders, through experimental and analytical investigations. The first part of the research program investigates the behaviour of CFRP-strengthened steel beams comprised of W Structural Sections (W) with cover plates welded to the tension flange. Six beams, 2000 mm long, were tested under cyclic loads to examine the effects of CFRP strip strengthening on the fatigue life. The CFRP strip prestressing process, type of CFRP strip, level of prestressing, and the location of the CFRP strips were the main parameters examined in this study. Debonding at the end of strip was a significant problem that can be controlled by applying a proper end clamp. The maximum increase in fatigue life observed in the experiments was 125 percent, for a specimen strengthened using high modulus CFRP strips bonded onto the cover plates with the highest level of prestressing. An analytical model and a finite element model were developed for analyzing the strengthened beams. A fracture mechanic analysis was performed to investigate the effects of prestressing on the crack growth rates at the critical weld toe. The models were verified using experimental results, and then used to perform parametric studies. It is shown that the effectiveness of reinforcement is greatest for beams with strips on the cover plate, higher CFRP elastic modulus, and higher prestressing level. In general, this study demonstrates that steel beams can indeed be successfully strengthened or repaired using prestressed CFRP materials.

Book excerpt: While traditional retrofitting methods for steel bridge girders could be time consuming and uneconomical, an alternative repair method is suggested using Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) laminate strips, providing engineers with a competitive solution that will increase the life-cycle of repaired bridges. This study investigated its feasibility as an option to strengthen and rehabilitate steel bridges. The main advantages of using CFRP laminates are their light weight and durability, which results in ease of handling and maintenance. The research conducted experimental and analytical work to evaluate the effectiveness of strengthening steel beams by the use of novel CFRP laminate strips configurations. The research involved the testing of five experimental composite beams, in addition to the development of approximately 100 finite element models. The results showed a significant gain in the beam's elastic and ultimate capacities. The conclusion is that there are specific sensitive parameters controlling the effectiveness of the CFRP laminate rehabilitation technique. An adequate AASHTO design of the rehabilitation method, which takes into consideration the effective parameters, would result in an effective bridge structure.

Book excerpt: The goal of this study was to develop and evaluate the performance of retrofit techniques for existing steel bridges that have already sustained damage due to distortion-induced fatigue, or are anticipated to experience distortion-induced fatigue cracking within their design life. A second goal was to evaluate the use of new technologies and materials for repairing distortion-induced fatigue damage in steel bridges. While a number of retrofit techniques exist for repairing distortion-induced fatigue cracking, many of them require partial or full bridge closure to perform the repair. The retrofits developed under this project are intended to be able to be installed with minimal disturbance to traffic. Four primary subject matters are reported on within this document: (1) the development of the "angles-with-plate" distortion-induced fatigue repair; (2) development of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) repairs for distortion-induced fatigue and in-plane fatigue; (3) development of Piezoelectric Induced Compressive Kinetics (PICK) technology for treatment of crack-arrest holes; and (4) a series of analytical investigations aimed at better understanding distortion-induced fatigue susceptibility of skewed bridge systems.

Book excerpt: The repair of deteriorated, damaged and substandard civil infrastructures has become one of the most important issues for the civil engineer worldwide. This important book discusses the use of externally-bonded fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites to strengthen, rehabilitate and retrofit civil engineering structures, covering such aspects as material behaviour, structural design and quality assurance. The first three chapters of the book review structurally-deficient civil engineering infrastructure, including concrete, metallic, masonry and timber structures. FRP composites used in rehabilitation and surface preparation of the component materials are also reviewed. The next four chapters deal with the design of FRP systems for the flexural and shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams and the strengthening of RC columns. The following two chapters examine the strengthening of metallic and masonry structures with FRP composites. The last four chapters of the book are devoted to practical considerations in the flexural strengthening of beams with unstressed and prestressed FRP plates, durability of externally bonded FRP composite systems, quality assurance and control, maintenance, repair, and case studies. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Strengthening and rehabilitation of civil infrastructures using fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites is a valuable reference guide for engineers, scientists and technical personnel in civil and structural engineering working on the rehabilitation and strengthening of the civil infrastructure. - Reviews the use of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in structurally damaged and sub-standard civil engineering structures - Examines the role and benefits of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in different types of structures such as masonry and metallic strengthening - Covers practical considerations including material behaviour, structural design and quality assurance

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to 1985, it was common practice to avoid welding the connection plates to the tension flange of the girders of steel bridges. However, extensive fatigue cracking has developed in the unstiffened web gaps because of out-ofplane distortion. A new retrofit option was investigated that uses a room-temperature-cured two-part epoxy (3M Adhesive DP460-NS) to join a small length of 3/4-inch thick steel angle to the tension flange and the connection plate. A field test on two skewed bridges showed that the adhesive-angle retrofit system decreased the out-of-plane strain range by 40 to 50% when the original strain range was more than 50 microstrains. The ten adhesive-angle retrofits remained in place and were in good condition after three and a half years, suggesting that the chosen adhesive had good environmental durability. A laboratory large-scale specimen test with 8 web gaps showed that the retrofit system stopped or retarded most cracks even without stop holes when the measured out-of-plane strains were approximately 600 microstrains. Coupon tests conducted to investigate the environmental durability of the chosen adhesive showed that the chosen adhesive is suitable for applications at room or low temperature, even with high relative humidity.
