Book excerpt: The remarkable untold story of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the five extraordinary men he used to pull America into World War II In the dark days between Hitler’s invasion of Poland in September 1939 and Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Franklin D. Roosevelt sent five remarkable men on dramatic and dangerous missions to Europe. The missions were highly unorthodox and they confounded and infuriated diplomats on both sides of the Atlantic. Their importance is little understood to this day. In fact, they were crucial to the course of the Second World War. The envoys were magnificent, unforgettable characters. First off the mark was Sumner Welles, the chilly, patrician under secretary of state, later ruined by his sexual misdemeanors, who was dispatched by FDR on a tour of European capitals in the spring of 1940. In summer of that year, after the fall of France, William “Wild Bill” Donovan—war hero and future spymaster—visited a lonely United Kingdom at the president’s behest to determine whether she could hold out against the Nazis. Donovan’s report helped convince FDR that Britain was worth backing. After he won an unprecedented third term in November 1940, Roosevelt threw a lifeline to the United Kingdom in the form of Lend-Lease and dispatched three men to help secure it. Harry Hopkins, the frail social worker and presidential confidant, was sent to explain Lend-Lease to Winston Churchill. Averell Harriman, a handsome, ambitious railroad heir, served as FDR’s man in London, expediting Lend-Lease aid and romancing Churchill’s daughter-in-law. Roosevelt even put to work his rumpled, charismatic opponent in the 1940 presidential election, Wendell Willkie, whose visit lifted British morale and won wary Americans over to the cause. Finally, in the aftermath of Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union, Hopkins returned to London to confer with Churchill and traveled to Moscow to meet with Joseph Stalin. This final mission gave Roosevelt the confidence to bet on the Soviet Union. The envoys’ missions took them into the middle of the war and exposed them to the leading figures of the age. Taken together, they plot the arc of America’s trans¬formation from a divided and hesitant middle power into the global leader. At the center of everything, of course, was FDR himself, who moved his envoys around the globe with skill and élan. We often think of Harry S. Truman, George Marshall, Dean Acheson, and George F. Kennan as the authors of America’s global primacy in the second half of the twentieth century. But all their achievements were enabled by the earlier work of Roosevelt and his representatives, who took the United States into the war and, by defeating domestic isolationists and foreign enemies, into the world. In these two years, America turned. FDR and his envoys were responsible for the turn. Drawing on vast archival research, Rendezvous with Destiny is narrative history at its most delightful, stirring, and important.

Book excerpt: When he stands before Giorgione's La Tempesta, Booker Prize-winning author John Berger sees not only the painting but our whole notion of time, sweeping us away from a lost Eden. A photograph of a gravely joyful crowd gathered on a Prague street in November 1989 provokes reflection on the meaning of democracy and the reunion of a people with long-banished hopes and dreams. With the luminous essays in Keeping a Rendezvous, we are given to see the world as Berger sees it -- to explore themes suggested by the work of Jackson Pollock or J. M. W. Turner, to contemplate the wonder of Paris. Rendezvous are manifold: between critic and art, artist and subject, subject and the unknown. But most significant are the rendezvous between author and reader, as we discover our perceptions informed by Berger's eloquence and courageous moral imagination.

Book excerpt: Raised by parents who came of age in the sixties and went on to achieve worldwide fame, Louise has survived their celebrity, their turbulent marriage, and the divorce that left her in the care of her devoted father and on the periphery of her mother's chaotic life. Now eighteen, Louise waits for her long-absent mother in a cafe. Carefully balancing anticipation with the fear that her mother will once again disappoint her, she digs deep into a store of memories. Her recollections of childhood incidents bring her face to face with the reasons behind her mother's self-destructive behavior and clarify her own complicated feelings for a deeply flawed parent.Writing with wry humor and sometimes savage irony, Levy captures the essence of a love at once profoundly troubled and indestructible. Book excerpt: While vacationing in the mountains, Eric meets an unusual girl, Susan, who has sparkling, emerald eyes that are unusually captivating. They are a unique, singular shade of green and seem to be imbued with an ancient fire that even a spoiled, youthfully unperceptive Eric could easily feel. He senses a strange maturity about this mysterious girl and is drawn to her like a magnet. When I said we would never be married, I meant in your way, Susan said. Will you marry me in my way? Right now?Even though numerous questions clamored in his head, Eric easily replied, Of course.Eric's answer was far too easy in Susan's opinion. As she mused over his quick reply, she speculated on how to best explain their strange situation in terms that he could understand, an impossibility to do beforehand. He would have to commit himself, then learn the truth. It was unfair to the extreme, yet unavoidable under these very peculiar circumstances, and thus Eric is drawn into a mysterious world.

Book excerpt: In 1972, Jan Sherman was a beautiful 22-year-old actress/stunt woman who fled the Hollywood 'rat race' by moving to the island of Ibiza off the coast of Spain. Her life changed forever after attending an eclectic party of expatriate artists and hippies when the hostess invited her to South America to buy and smuggle a kilo of cocaine. Jan knew nothing about the drug; what it looked like, how it was used, how to sell it or to whom. But the seductive lure of quick, huge profits to finance her travels around the world and a thirst for adventure convinced her to march blindly into the unknown - the ruthless, macho male dominated drug underworld. That decision changed her life forever. In search of the 'precious crystal', Jan chose to live a secret double life while 'acting' as a freelance photographer during the decade of the seventies. It was her preferred alternative to a 9-to-5 job. Luckily, it was before Pablo Escobar's Colombian Medellín cartel in the 1980's and Joaquin "el Chapo" Guzman's Mexican Sinaloa cartel in the 1990's, took control of the cocaine trade. Otherwise, she may not have lived to tell her story.Jan Sherman was a fearless, "kick-ass chick" with balls, who followed her own path. Her mantra was "living life to the fullest meant freedom and freedom meant money." While on the 'cocaine trail,' her gut instincts were her guide to every dilemma she encountered; surviving a coup d'etat in La Paz, mobsters in Lima and arrest in the Bolivian jungle. Most smugglers were busted, languishing in deplorable foreign jails for years or worse yet, murdered. Jan Sherman beat the odds, netting seven kilos of cocaine worth $2 million today. At the end of the book, there's a bonus portfolio of 68 color and B&W photos. Readers can see the 'real cast of characters,' as well as an amazing travelogue of Jan's photojournalism while experiencing her adventures in South America, Africa, and China.

Book excerpt: In an era during which the United States Supreme Court handed down some of its most important decisions, including Brown v. Board of Education (1954), Baker v. Carr (1962), and Miranda v. Arizona (1966), three senators from South Carolina—Olin Johnston, Strom Thurmond, and Ernest “Fritz” Hollings—waged war on the court’s progressive agenda by targeting the federal judicial nominations process. To Face Down Dixie explores these senators’ role in some of the most contentious confirmation battles in recent history, including those of Thurgood Marshall, Abe Fortas, and Clement Haynsworth. In scrutinizing Supreme Court nominees and attempting to restrict the power of the nine justices of the court, these senators defied not only the leadership of the Democratic Party but also the Senate traditions of hierarchy and seniority. Along with South Carolina’s conservative, segregationist political establishment, which maintained ironclad control over the state’s legislature, Johnston, Thurmond, and Hollings effectively drowned out the many moderate voices in South Carolina that remained critical of their obstructionism, thus advancing their own conservative credentials and boosting their chances of reelection. To Face Down Dixie examines for the first time the central role that South Carolina played in turning Supreme Court nomination hearings into confrontational and political public events. James O. Heath argues that the state’s war on the court concealed its antipathy to civil rights by using the confirmation process to challenge the court’s function as the final arbiter of policy on questions relating to law and order, obscenity, communist subversion, and school prayer. Heath’s study illustrates that while South Carolina’s history of “massive resistance” is less prominent than that of other states, its politicians acted as persistent antagonists in the complex and dramatic debates in the U.S. Senate during the era of civil rights.
