Book excerpt: This thesis presents an expressive (non-photorealistic) rendering approach created by combining volumetric rendering techniques with the Line Integral Convolution (LIC) in 3D space. Although some techniques that combine volume rendering with the LIC have beenintroduced in computer graphics, they are mainly used for the scientific visualization fields, such as the visualization of 3D fluid fields. Unlike earlier research, we will focus on artistic representation, which is significantly different than scientific visualization research. We will implement a brush-stroke effect on the implicit surfaces by using the LIC. The implicit surfaces are described as volume datasets that are created by the voxelization of triangular meshes. To acquire smearing effects on the surface we convolve along the vector fields with the densities of the voxels of the datasets. These vector fields are defined by users as texture maps. The final images are rendered with volume ray casting, integrating colors and densities of voxels with Perlin noise along vector fields. The Perlin noise provides randomness and allows us to generate scratches. Smearing effects on the surfaceof an object create the illusion of 3D brush-strokes as if a painter had created brush strokes on a canvas. The rendering system is implemented using standard C and C++ programming languages. 3D models are then created using Alias Maya [superscript]TM and Topmod [superscript]TM.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "The three-dimensional shape and relative depth of a smoothly curving layered transparent surface may be communicated particularly effectively when the surface is artistically enhanced with sparsely distributed opaque detail. This paper describes how the set of principal directions and principal curvatures specified by local geometric operators can be understood to define a natural 'flow' over the surface of an object, and can be used to guide the placement of the lines of a stroke texture that seeks to represent 3D shape information in a perceptually intuitive way. The driving application for this work is the visualization of layered isovalue surfaces in volume data, where the particular identity of an individual surface is not generally known a priori and observers will typically wish to view a variety of different level surfaces from the same distribution, superimposed over underlying opaque structures. By advecting an evenly distributed set of tiny opaque particles, and the empty space between them, via 3D line integral convolution through the vector field defined by the principal directions and principal curvatures of the level surfaces passing through each gridpoint of a 3D volume, it is possible to generate a single scan-converted solid stroke texture that may intuitively represent the essential shape information of any level surface in the volume. To generate longer strokes over more highly curved areas, where the directional information is both most stable and most relevant, and to simultaneously downplay the visual impact of directional information in the flatter regions, one may dynamically redefine the length of the filter kernel according to the magnitude of the maximum principal curvature of the level surface at the point around which it is applied. Strokes are constrained in narrowness by the resolution of the volume within which the texture is represented, but may be variably widened, at the time of rendering, to reflect shading information or any other function defined over the volume data, by adaptively indexing into multiple pre-computed texture volumes obtained from advected particles of different sizes."

Also, when used to view three-dimensional (3D) vector fields, the resulting images are dense and cluttered, making it difficult to perceive the flow on the interior parts of the field. This thesis describes research to make the 3D LIC more interactive by implementing it on the Graphics Processor Unit (GPU). It also includes methods to improve the clarity of the 3D LIC images. The volume dataset and a 3D noise volume are placed in GPU memory as 3D textures. The GPU is then used to perform the LIC computations and display the resulting volume. This allows the user to dynamically adjust LIC parameters and derive more insight into the 3D flow field. Various techniques such as introduction of sparsity and the use of stereographics help to de-clutter the scene. Resulting images and timing benchmarks are included.
